The WTCP was a grounded station and though there are much better out there now, it was one of the first proper temperature controlled stations out there and is still suitable for the task with the correct tip.? When doing SMT work, being on the small parts for short durations is of course a good idea.? If you are more comfortable doing this hot, then it's okay as long as you are aware you have to be quick.? In some cases the devices are stubborn and need plate or air heating in addition to an iron.? In those cases you would want to use a cooler iron... That is if you needed to preheat the device.? Usually that is only for QFN and BGA type devices.? We tend to avoid those in ham designs though, as they are best done as paste and stencil and floated down into place.? My directions were for smt parts with leads.? Pads are a different story.? My point is that the type of chip that the CPK-3 uses is easy to do if you use my method. At some point we will only see those types available and even though DIP adapters can be used fairly easily in projects and are readily available, you'll still need to be able to solder the chip to the adapter.? It's a good technique to learn because of this!? Hopefully this is what you are looking for in a response.?
