TSW - Console command for weather app
I've never heard of such a command, but can see where it might be useful ?

I've actually been battling the Weather App and Widget for several months at various sites. It seems to randomly stop working on some panels, while still working on others. I have one site with several TSW-1060s, running the same vtz, same firmware, and the same network settings - weather works on one of them, but not on the other six. Another project has a mix of 1060s and 1070s, with weather working on some, but not others. I'm never at the sites long enough to spend a few hours troubleshooting, but I've done all the "basic" stuff like changing the location from Zip Code to Lat/Lon, deleting/re-adding the objects then recompiling, updating firmware, even Initializing and Restoring. Once in a while, one of those steps would work, but it's far from consistent - then I'm out of time and have to go. I finally opened a case with TB, and of course they couldn't duplicate the issue. However, they did give me a nudge by creating a new VtPro project with a single page containing both versions of the Weather App, and a Weather Widget. I wasn't on-site so I loaded it to one of my TSW-1052s at home, and it immediately worked! I stripped my running VtPro project down to a single page with the Weather App and Weather Widget - the app worked, but the widget DIDN'T. After an hour or so of screwing around with different settings, I discovered that if I pressed the Gear icon on the Weather App then selected a new (or the same) location, that would cause the widget to start working. This "could" be a solution to the problem, except for two things... #1 - On some panels, both the widget and app will stop working. Without the app working, the above step can't be performed. #2 - Even if the app is working, the above step would have to be performed on EACH affected panel. Not a big deal on sites with only a few panels, but it could be very annoying on others. So, if such a command exists it could be very useful. For now, I've added Enable joins to enable the App a second after flipping to the Weather page, and disable the Widget (which is in the header, and displayed on all pages) when on the Weather page. My thought (hope) is that enabling and disabling the objects might "kickstart" them into working, if they're not already. I only did that last night, and the weather was already working from earlier troubleshooting. There hasn't been enough time to see if it's a fix at my house, and I haven't been to one of the trouble sites to try it yet. --- On Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 9:08 AM, Chris Kangis wrote: |
Well, other than the fact it's on every Residential touchpanel I've done in the last 15 years, -I- like seeing the current temp on my own touchpanels at home.

I don't really use the Weather App much, but I like to see the current temperature and today's high & low in the panel's header. As a last resort, I could replace the widget with individual elements driven by the Simpl module. Although that module has also had issues over the years, it seems more stable than the Smart Objects. --- On Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 1:33 PM, XSDS wrote: |

Yeah, we all have many systems out there with this feature for years so Clients are used to it. If we go down the road of removing features that don't work reliably, the Touch screens with be blank!...? ?That will eliminate service calls after a while, though!? Now if only I could win a $$$ lottery, that won't be a problem! Haha!!

Tony:
My experience has been that a Factory Reset and reconfig/re-install of the VTP will solve the issue with x60 and x70 panels. I know that SUX!!
My interest in the Console command was just to test a theory and is related to this:
1. Forgot to update the Zip code in my VTP file before loading (because I have nothing else to remember...)
2. Loaded the files to some 770 panels, and the Weather showed the wrong location, as expected...:(
3. Updated and loaded the VTP files to the panels, but the panels persist with showing only the original site instead of the new site location.
4. Waited 24 hours hoping it would update (this does happen sometimes) - It didn't...
5. Thought I remembered an update command that would refresh instead of waiting for the overnight update, which doesn't work anyway!
?
I'll try resetting the panels to see if that resolves things (I think it will).
Alternatively, I believe if I manually at each TSW added the new locations and then deleted the old/wrong location this would fix the issues as well, as long as the location info is correct in the VTP file...
?
CRESTRON, are you still listening??? Anytime you want to get back to the place where Mr. F would be proud of how things are done and taken care of, that would be great!!! |
Chris,
?
Like everyone else, I've been battling this for a while.
Although, it seems like lately it has gotten much worse.
?
Let me preface this next statement with ... I haven't heard from this client regarding this issue since I implemented my "trial" fix.? (We all know that just because a client hasn't reported back doesn't mean there isn't a problem.)
?
?This was my "fix".
So far, this has "fixed", as far as I know, the few panels I have tested it on.
?
It should go without saying that I did all of the proper steps with the "Core3config.ini" file (make a backup copy and only edit the parameters related to the weather app).
?
It seems ridiculously "aggressive" to do with every touch panel deployed in the field.
Maybe it will work for you.
?
The real answer is that Crestron needs to dedicate at least one software engineer to fixing these "nagging" issues that plague all of us!
These seemingly small things are a "black eye" on the Crestron name.
?
Good luck! |
Thanks for sharing Brian. However, assuming subsequent uploads would over-write that file, it would be very tedious to maintain long-term, especially on large systems.

I do agree that the problem seems to have gotten worse in the last few months. --- On Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 4:36 PM, Brian Matson wrote: |
On site with my (2) 770's that won't take the new Weather location, and I *think* I've found a solution...Here's hoping for all situations...
?
Here's what I did:
1. Sent INITIALIZE Y to the TSW via console (clears the graphics files and I confirmed with Brian's FZ/Core3 technique that it clears the weather location data!!)
2. It reboots
3. After it comes back, I hard boot it, just to get a clean start (not sure that this is necessary, but I'm tired!!)
4. Load the VTP project with the correct default location Zip code
?
This process is WAY easier (especially remotely) than doing a complete factory reset.? It maintains the IP, UN/PW, IP-ID, etc.
This *may* work with x60 panels as well...? I'm sure I'll get the opportunity to test it in the next few months...HAHA! |
