Forcing Sonos update on a TSW-x60

Is there a way to force a TSW-x60 to update it's Sonos app without having to wait for the 2am scheduled update? I know I can issue the console command 'appupdate sonos', but as I understand it, that merely enables the 2am schedule without having to launch the Sonos app on the touchscreen first (which also enables it). What I want to do is update the Sonos app now.

Yes you can force an update.? Here are my notes:

appupdate sonos (this updates the Sonos app on demand)

auenable on (this will update all apps every night, see web gui for time)

austatus (this checks the status of the update)

ver -v (this reports the versions of all the firmware in the TSW-760)

Either via appupdate sonos sonmand it via Check For App Updates button on the setup page.

All ‘appupdate sonos’ does is report: Checking for updates, will update if needed.

The Sonos app is still stuck on 10.6.2

I've dealt with this issue several times for a customer,

firstly,?

secondly, they have an alternative URL for downloads if the first isn't downloading correctly. (I'm not gunna google that for you).?

thirdly, 10.6.2 seems to be the latest for TSW's, and I'm pretty sure that Sonos isn't supporting the Crestron TSW's for future updates.

Sonos is a huge []Dain in the butt with TSW's, I would recommend an iPad on the same VLAN/Subnet as the speakers, and a Sonos boost, tbh.

Good Luck,
Scott Baker

Great, so from what I can see there, after what must have been no more than two years of fanfared Sonos/Crestron integration, the TSW-x60 hardware (the newest Crestron touchscreen available) is already unsupported.

It wouldn't be a problem if the Sonos module offered more than just "Sonos Favorites" selection from the TSW Media Player.

Makes a mockery of the "seamless integration" claimed here:??and where it states "To do even more, launch the Sonos App directly on you Crestron touchscreen (*on select models)" it should probably state "To do even more, launch the Sonos App directly on you Crestron touchscreen (*on select models, while the already obsolete version of the Sonos app that runs on the screens is still supported at all by Sonos)".

Out of interest, what the relevance of adding a Sonos boost?

So you should probably take that up with Sonos!? You are getting upset that the marriage between Crestron & Sonos is already on rocky terms and has gone through a divorce.? Unfortunately that is the way it has always been for years with Sonos.? Why you would expect any different is of concern, but then again you must not have been fully aware of how Sonos treats all 3rd parties or at the least, what happens when the 3rd party vendor can at any moment make an API change and break any sort of communications that there is.? Perhaps a little bit more due diligence and research should have been had before trying to sell it to client.

Oh yes, sorry Pat, I must be imagining that this page??is still live on the Crestron website, driving my customers expectations. My bad.

Again, it your job as the integrator/programmer to do your due diligence and test before selling or trying to deploy something to a client.? Have you not been reading all the aggravation over the years about Sonos integration, or heck different integration with a few different vendors that the API broke.? Perhaps, rather than venting your frustration here, you should be contacting your rep, or better yet Crestron directly if they broke your heart and hurt your feelings because what is/was claimed is different than what is really happening.

Due diligence and testing? The system worked fine when I specified and installed it. At the time this was hailed as a new partnership with Sonos, not some dodgy reverse engineered API hack, likely to break every time Sonos did an update. It's still being marketed as such today by Crestron, but sure, I should be more diligent.

Yes, you're also right that I should be complaining to Crestron/Sonos about this, not moaning on here, but I'll certainly respond when someone suggests the integration failure is somehow MY fault, for not going in with the cynical expectation that it was doomed to failure from the off. In case you hadn't noticed, Crestron withdrew their own streaming music solution even before the Sonos integration was a thing, so a 3rd-party solution is the only one.

What I would like is someway to block Sonos from updating in the first place -- both the App on mobile devices and the Sonos components themselves.?

While you can tell the client to never update the Sonos App, I have had several cases where a guest came over, connected to the Sonos, and then updated the system. It has broken the Crestron interface several time.? If the client had an older iPad, the Sonos App on that iPad would stop working because it doesn't support the latest iOS.

Yes I am not happy with Sonos too.? It is not just Crestron that Sonos dropped support.? Sonos was selling Sonos Connects up to late year year.? They tried to drop support of the Sonos Connect this year but back down.? But still, they broke it.? The feature "play from this device" now no long works from the Connect on iOS devices and the Connect doesn't support Airplay.? That may be an iOS thing breaking that feature.? But it is pretty crappy that a product 6 months old loses functionality.

Agree with all that.

Wish there was viable music streaming alternative.

Oh, and if anyone pipes up with “Autonomic“, I’ll assume they’ve either never used it themselves, or are just trolling me. ?

If you've been working with Crestron for more than a few years then you really should know that issues like this are to be expected.? I (and many others) warned a lot of people in this group, Labs, Reddit, and Facebook groups that the Crestron/Sonos "partnership" was barely a partnership at all and to expect issues with the integration.? When was the last time you saw any sort of Crestron "partnership" work out?? Pandora?? Nope, that lasted until they decided to bail on the CEN-TRACK-AUDIONET.? Amazon?? Nope...they got the Alexa integration barely working and then just stopped updating it and never bothered to add more features to it (like AV control).? Apple?? Nope...barely works and they've been promising more functionality for how many years now?? Google? Did they ever get Google Home to work properly with voice?? It was severely broken last time I checked.? Logitech?? Is using their USB web cams a real partnership that helps us in any way?? I can go on and on but I think you get my point.?

If you visit Sonos, they have a list of partners at:

Unfortunately, Crestron is not on the list. The same can be said for Control 4 and Savant. But companies like URC, Integra, Onkyo, and Elan are!? What gives?

My guess is market penetration/installed base size for one. A lot for the IoT ecosystem is focused on

So found a clients site just today where they had updated to the Sonos S2 and actually had no issues, was pleasantly surprised

Wow. Considering the amount of times stuff broke with just a minor version update within “S1”, that everything still works moving to what we’re led to believe is an entirely different OS is quite something.

I imagine then S2 must have some sort of legacy integration support.

According to the Crestron/Sonos webinar today the API has not changed.? So SIMPL Sonos modules, smart graphics and Crestron Home should be unaffected.? The majority of the changes are related to the new hardware (Arc, Play, Sub) that require the S2 app whereas the previous gen gear can still run on S1.

Just to add to Jim's comment about the webinar...

  1. They said the X60 panels will continue to run the S1 app, so I'm assuming their will be a firmware update for the X60 panels that will update the app, because the app in my panel here isn't updating and it just tells me it needs to be updated.?
  2. There will be no S2 app for the X60 panels
  3. The media player object, and the Sonos modules, will continue to work with an S1 system
  4. The media player object and the Sonos module will work with an S2 system
  5. The media player object and the Sonos modules will NOT work with a system with a mixture of S1 and S2 components
