Anyone have a CAGE2 for the AV2?

Does anyone out there have a CAGE2 available for a decent price? I can't believe how much Crestron charges for a simple interconnect.

I can sympathize but I don't have one. You must really dislike the
Extron corporation if you think Crestron's bad!

How DO they SLEEP at NIGHT.

Heh... You haven't bought an Ethernet card for that AV2 yet, have
you? :)

Actually, I have one already that came with the unit. Yes, those are expensive too; however, at least the Ethernet card has some meat and potatoes behind it. With the CAGE2, it's just a damn interconnect. I can't validate how Crestron would charge so much for so little.

Simple. They're the only ones who make it. Therefore, charge what
you want. Plenty of other companies who do very specialized stuff do
exactly the same.

A small group of us here did some math on this several months back and
basically what we found was that retail on an AV2 with card cage was
pretty close to retail of a PRO2.
Since the PRO2 is Crestron's flagship they promote that unit over all
the others (excepting Adagio), so the theory is they priced it that
way to encourage purchasing the PRO2 over the AV2 with a cage.
Its a marketing strategy, basically the same reason as the hot dog and
bun thing.

I was able to get an AV2, an RF gateway, and an Ethernet card for $500 total. From that deal, I decided I am going ot learn how to program this stuff. Unfortunately, I still face the gotchas like this CAGE2 part...which limits my learning since it's so hard for me to obtain components.

Don't forget that depending on you're fully-loaded labor rate, it could
wind up being cheaper to buy the Pro2 than buy the AV2, Cage2, and then
pay someone to remove all of the screws and install the Cage2 in the AV2
then reinstall all of the screws.

Not to mention that the Pro2 gives you loads of extras. Under the
catch-all phrase "Front Panel".

It's an advertising tool. It's a support tool. It's a status tool. It's
a debugging tool.

Back to the original poster, if there's not a cage2 in the processor and
the only reason you'd be installing a cage is for this one card, you're
probably better off using the network device version.

If you're determined to just use volume/tone control, the ST-VC is
functionally identical to the CNX-VTC3 but it sits on the Cresnet
network rather than in a card slot.

I'd still suggest going the VEQ4 route [though, full disclosure, my
system at home has 2 ST-VCs because I picked them up uber cheap], in
which case the network device is the C2N-VEQ4 (functionally identical to
the C2-VEQ4 card).

I got that CNX card off ebay for $46 total. From this, I thought I would be able to obtain a CAGE2 for a decent price.

If it turns out I can't find a CAGE2 for a fair price, I will move onto something else as you mention below...

Hey, at least you get something tangible for your money. I just love
paying $2000 for a string of letters and digits to "unlock" the
functionality of software I already have.

Well, if you're patient, a CAGE2 will show up on ebay sooner or later (a new
one sold for $112.50 a week or so back) - it might include an AV2, in which
case you'll have a pair of AV2's or could resell on of them. Otherwise,
you're into this for such short money, that it shouldn't be THAT painful to
cough up the money for the CAGE2. Another option is to watch out for a PRO2
on ebay. Also keep an eye out here - some of the dealers sell some of the
overstock items for reasonable prices once in a while.

You're not likely to find a lot of sympathy for having to pay for the
hardware on this list - the majority of the members are dealers (or work
with/for dealers) and sell the hardware as part of their revenue stream. If
you want to get the equipment for less than full retail, you need to shop
ebay, become a dealer, or come up with a mutually beneficial relationship
with a dealer.

So little? They're giving you the ability to add up to nine
additional com ports to your AV2 - among other possibilities - without
resorting to external bus devices.

You're not paying for what it is, but for what it enables you to
do... :)
