Small Form Factor Computers
We've used the Zotac Zbox a few times and they were pretty good:?? ---In Crestron@..., <floyd1212@...> wrote: What is everyone's favorite SFF computer to leave behind on a job for remote access? There's always the option of a cheap laptop, but I'm curious if there is anything smaller and cheaper, that can run Toolbox and host a LogMeIn or TeamViewer session.? I've been using a Win7 Netbook for a few years that I bought specifically for this purpose.? At the time, a few years ago, I looked into some other options, but Costco sold the 10" Acer for about $280, which was hard to beat for what I wanted to do with it.? It isn't fast, but it runs the full Crestron/AMX suite, and TeamViewer just fine, and if it happened to "walk offsite" I wasn't out a lot of money.? And with the lid closed, you can slip it into an empty space in the rack (on top of a bigger peice of gear) and no-one even notices. I've even been using it for deploying large, multi-room projects when I'm actually onsite as well, as I can leave my 17" beast setup somewhere, make modifications, then save to SD card, and pop out the SD card from by big laptop, and run to a room across the building with the Netbook, for loading the precompiled program in.? Definately got my money's worth out of on the first project that I left it 100+ miles from my home office, so I didn't have to travel to the site as often as the build out was going on over a 6 month period. I've been looking around, now that the newer gen ones are out and almost as cheap, now you get a 11" dual core running Win8 w/ touch screen for just a little more than $300, it's been tempting. ---In Crestron@..., <floyd1212@...> wrote: What is everyone's favorite SFF computer to leave behind on a job for remote access? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIn ¡°huge¡± projects where we also have a very active project management/network design and administration role we¡¯ve been using low spec (for a server) 1RU Dell servers (I think the current is the R300) with the current desktop flavor of windows (XP or 7 depending on when the project was built). ? The R300 is nothing I would want on *my* (e.g. corporate) network as a server [single SATA hard drive, single PSU, no RAID controller, no RAC, >=8GB of RAM] but it¡¯s not a bad box for relatively light if you¡¯re considering it a ¡°PC¡± and not a ¡°Server¡± ¨C like living in a rack and serving as a launching point for [remote desktop-via-the-VPN] remote support/logging/firmware updates. ? -- Lincoln King-Cliby, CTS Commercial Market Director Sr. Systems Architect | Crestron Certified Master Programmer (Silver) ControlWorks Consulting, LLC Crestron Services Provider http://www.controlworks.com From:
