vtpro-e hang time
Nightcountry
Hi is anyone else having a problem when compiling a vtpro program -
pc hangs at 50 percent when loading fonts and sometimes freezes completely - another installer I know is having the same issues ..... the program is taking 300,000 kb in memory - have an I-7 processor with 6 gigs of ram and am still having problems - with vt 3.8 and now with vt 3.9 thanks |

You'll that typically with the older devices. TPS2000, TPS3000 etc...
Don't really know why. I know that 6L's and 8X's compile quickly, so going back to update 2000's is just painful. -JOHN --- In Crestron@..., "Nightcountry" <patrickbedford@...> wrote:

Thats odd because the program that is causing the most problems is one for a TPS6L - |

I too am experiencing the hang at about 50% as it tries to do something with the fonts. It always finishes eventually, however. - Jeff |

Just yesterday I figured out what the problem was (after trying a bunch of things with TB). When I got the new PC, my files were moved from my C: drive to My Documents folder. The difference? My Documents (here at the college, anyway) is configured by our IT department as a network drive, not a local drive. It works great for keeping things automatically backed up and accessible everywhere, but it turns out that SIMPL and VTPro-e do NOT like to compile off of the network. At all. Interesting notes: when compiling from the network drive, it would take upwards of 30 minutes to compile a SIMPL program with the MPS- 100 module in it. As soon as I copied it to the C drive, it took 14 seconds! Same with VTPro-e: I had a TPMC-15-QM panel that took 20 minutes to compile. Copied to C drive... compiles in less than 10 seconds! Lesson for me: keep files on the C drive, back them up regularly via some other method, and compile problems go away. I really hope this helps solve your problems, I was extremely frustrated with compile times for several months... so I know how you feel. I experience this problems on some panels as well but I just have to
wait a minute or two and it always finishes. I've found that I really have to be careful not to use too many fonts in my projects as it causes the compile time to slow down as wall as keeps the file size too large for some panels. My recommendation to you is to eliminate any unnecessary fonts and give it another go. - Ccates --- In Crestron@..., "Nightcountry" <patrickbedford@...> wrote:

Thanks - the file size I am using with the tps6l is around 10 meg however the panels capacity is 28 - when you say eliminate unnecessary fonts do you mean the number of font styles or just text information? Cheers

How much memory is in your PC and what is the usage of the memory when you are compiling? Does it exceed the physical memory so that it starts swapping?

I have 6 gig of ddr3 memory but because I am using xp, the os only sees 3.24 gig - vt uses 300,000 kb in memory usage when I working on the program - am using the new I-7 intel processing ship as well - the memory usage is so massive that I suspect it is the culprit but my old pc using a P3 processor would use only 70-80000 kb of memory when using vt..... I do find that 6L's are slower than 8X, but not much and nowhere near
the drag that 2000's are. I also found that my desktop takes longer to compile (quad core) than my laptop (dual core). -JOHN --- In Crestron@..., "Nightcountry" <patrickbedford@...> wrote: really program -have to be careful not to use too many fonts in my projects as itThanks - the file size I am using with the tps6l is around 10 meg .....pc hangs at 50 percent when loading fonts and sometimes freezes Yahoo!the Database area. It seems to hang when "exporting fonts" - do the TPS-6L and similar panels have a particular

What I found is that if you consolidate the fonts and don't use too many I'll second that. After cutting/pasting, and adjusting, you can wind up with a bunch of fonts, some that aren't even displayed, for example a border as a background with no text. I had all these Arial fonts in my stuff, but I never use that horrible font. Cut down the compile time considerably - besides, it's not a very efficient way of managing stuff. Heath |

To experiment I created a new TPS-6L project with only 1 page and only 6 text objects on the page. Each one was the same font only in different sizes. Every font that I add, and every size in that font adds to the compile time. I was working in a room with 2 TPS-6L panels and was troubleshooting some problems and every time I wanted to change something on the panels I was in for at least 10 minutes of compile and upload time. I became very frustrated. It would be nice if the touchpanel remembered the exported fonts in the same way that you don't have to upload all of the graphics every time you upload to the panel. Xpanel and TPMC panels compile quickly because they natively support fonts. On the TPS panels I couldn't find any fonts that didn't choke VTPROe on compile - even the Crestron fonts take the same amount of time. Perhaps it's a Mac / VM problem - I don't remember it being this bad when I was on my old Dell. - Jeff |

This doesn't seem to be a problem related to the number of fonts. I experienced this imideately after I got my new Vista laptop. The old one (with XP) does not hang (at least not for more than a couple of seconds) at the point where the Vt-pro compiles the fonts. So - my conclution is that this is could be a Vista related problem. Jon |
Hi,Jon, I think that every font and every size you use adds to the compile time. If you use ariel in 8pt, 10pt, 14pt and 18pt it takes the same time as compiling 4 different fonts. I'm not using Vista, I'm using WinXP under VMware on a Mac. I think during the summer they changed something in the way VTPROe compiles fonts for TPS touchpanels. I was working on a TPMC-8X yesterday and it was such a pleasure to have it compile in just a few seconds. The long complie time for the TPS panels isn't that big of an issue except when I'm trying to debug or when I'm dealing with multiple panels in a system. - Jeff |
