VC4 test environment suggestions

I need a solution for setting up a VC4 in my home office and wanted to gauge what others suggest is the best method, particularly from a hardware perspective.?

My initial thought was to utilize xio cloud and the "trials" but not sure how feasible that is long term. Yesterday, I created an Alma Linux vm machine on my M1 and installed VC4, however the steps to modify the SNMPd.conf had permissions issues, I was unable to connect and not sure how much time to put into getting that approach working.

Basically, what do method is best for both cost and maintenance? I find myself going in circles between referencing online help, CTI videos and general info found in searches here. TIA.

In my opinion the best way to have a vc4 in your own office is to use a virtual machine and stick with the trial version.
First attempt to get the vc4 running is quite complex but if you set up vc4 after every trial period you will find it easier every time.?

You should find every information needed here:
https://docs.crestron.com/en-us/8912/Content/Topics/Installation/VC-4-Installation.htm

I hope that helps

Running a x64 OS on a M1 is slow.? It does work.? I have an old i7 pc that I run virtualization on that I run VC4 with.? As suggested by Joda, when it expires, just build another one.? While the manual is lengthy, in reality just run a basic Alma install, run the VC4 install script, and run the harden script from the answer ID.? Also, I believe you still want to install Alma 8.x.

Yes, thank you. Any hardware suggestions? I don't have any older PC's laying around but I do have a 2010 MacBook Pro that I could look at using virtualization.

Initially I was thinking of grabbing a mini linux/pc on amazon or something along those lines, if the M1 virtualization is a bad move.

you will need to make sure you modify the snmpd.conf file with the root pw of you set up when you installed AlmaLinux.

I run it on a VM. I have a clone of the AlamaLinux VM without VC4 installed then another version where I install VC4 fresh. It is kind of a pain in the ass but when the trial runs out i just delete the VM and clone the clone and do a fresh install. Keeps me sharp on Linux.?

We aren't using VC4 much now since hardware processors are more readily available but I have a few clients who have their one hardware and we have stood up VC4 across their different offices nationwide.

Thanks, that is actually the approach I have taken after messing with Virtualbox and getting VC4 to actually load.

My issue now is that My "Add Room" button is greyed out when I access the VC4 via the webgui. The device info screen also shows all fields blank.?

I followed all the steps and then hardened the server so not clear what is going on. It seems to be a licensing issue perhaps but I don't see any steps I need to take as all documentation implies it will just work after install. Anyone know what I am missing here?

After you hardened the server are you accessing the web gui through https instead of http and it should ask for username and password to login.

Edited

I was not using HTTPS, thank you for the direction. I now have the functionality expected, after using https and then logging in with the credentials. Appreciate it.

There is also a PAM/Hardening script somewhere on crestron help page for future so you don't have to do all the steps. Just seach PAM VC4 or Authenticate With PAM
