Thanks everybody for the advice.

Yea I installed 32 bit XP. Ive been using it on a 64 bit laptop for a while and im happy.

To compare Win 7 and XP you MUST compare on the same hardware. Ive done that for years. Ive been using various Toshiba Tecra laptops for years and they have the ability to use dual hard drives, one even hot swap. At power on you can choose from either HD to boot from. So I have SSD's in both slots. One has Win 7 and one XP. Both are fully supported on my current Tecra M9. 2.7Ghz, 4GB ram ( high performance ram )( only 3GB seen by XP 32).. I do a virgin install of the OS -NOT A OEM RESTORE- with all the crap on it. Both my Win 7 and XP are virgin clean installs from purchased full copies of windows with no programs or crap at all. I use msconfig and trim start up programs and services to just whats needed. I then use Deepfreeze to lock the install so every time I boot its as clean as it was from day one. Deepfreeze also allows me to not run a virus program as any virus would just go away with a reboot.

Flipping between the 2 is a clear difference. Even on simple web browsing using the same browser. Page elements kinda drop into place one by one quickly visually on Win 7 and on XP its just boom - the whole page is instantly rendered. Its also obviously faster flipping thru pages. I think all the DNS lookups and network interactions are not as snappy on Win 7. I do have a crazy networking setup at home tho so my internet connection is might zippy.

I think the big advantage XP has over Win 7 is footprint. My XP has 29 processes running and 131MB of ram in use at boot. Win 7 is a magnitude more stuff running and memory taken up. This is with careful trimming out of unused junk. Lots of use of msconfig. I think all this extra code and extra processes drag down its speed simply because there is a LOT more code for everything to get thru.

For my use its perfect. Both are fully supported on this laptop so I just boot what i need - however I never use Win 7. I also have a real RS232 port.

As there is nothing wrong with XP and in fact its very mature and debugged April 9 2014 will be a sad day. It will be interesting what Crestron does. I hope I can continue to use XP for a while yet.

Initialize clears all but wipes out anything else you might have on the processor like mobile projects etc.

Thanks -- apparently I need to refresh my memory of the "Anticipator"'s function -- Cool was at 6 [though I swear, other than FW updates I haven't touched the state since it was installed.

I knocked it down a bit and the frequency of cool calls has dropped -- but of course, today everything is overcast and relatively cool anyway so it's hard to be positive...

From what I am told, they use a visually lossless compression. Something
like one pixel per million is lost in the compression. This could be some
salesman myth, but that is what they tell me. I have had some televisions
try to enhance the picture when it didn't need to be enhanced. A TV setting
fixed that no problems.

I had my network setup in Parallels to be "Shared" and saw the IP address was in the 10.x.x.x range, when my local network is 192.x.x.x. I changed the setting to "Bridged", it snagged a 192� ip address and happy days.

Yes, by virtue of it being 32 bit. The 64 bit version of XP would not be, but that's a whole other set of issues.

You can also disable all the xtras of win7 and get it a little faster. But if you have a new laptop and plenty of cpu and ram you should not have any problems. I have come to really like win7 pro.

A lot of software I tried at the time just didn't seem to play nice with XP64. It all seems to work better under 7 64. XP64 seemed definitely be a very orphaned OS.

Speaking purely for myself, my home machine was about the same response level going to 7. At this point, I'm not going back to XP, ever. Can't say the same for work machines, since going to 7 meant a new machine.

A lot of people say that 8 actually seems much more responsive than 7 does for general usage. The biggest problem with 8 is that interface, but many guys I know use "classic shell" and have something much more like they're used to. My metric for an OS working is when a lot of games work (since games are pretty intensive, both in graphics drivers and the main processor), and a lot of gamers I know say 8 works great with most of their games.

Again, as always, everyone's mileage varies.

I'm sticking with 7 for quite some time. I only moved to 7 at the end of 2011.

I would be happy with Win 7 if it was not quite noticeably slower then XP. I seriously doubt older tools like SIMPL and Vtpro will drop XP support.

A given runtime distribution still supports it, and assuming microsoft doesn't somehow block that runtime from working on the newer OS's (or they change the runtime, which would involve a new version of Visual Studio most likely, and while I"m not Crestron, I can't see that happening for the older tools).

Studio, as we know, only supports 7 and up.

FYI, any join below 17000 will make the activity detector fire. 17000+ is for the "reserved join" range for the reserved join extenders, and those don't make it fire (i.e. you don't want the light detector fluttering on a panel to register activity; well, and if you did you could do the "old" ways of doing it.)

Page joins are < 17000, ergo they trigger it.

So I have a small piece of code running in my MC3 that basically says if my TPS-4L Activity Detection goes Low Set the hard button Backlight to Low and Jump to Page X. From my understanding Activity Detection is based on anything from the touch panel to the processor, not the other way around. But in my case here, when the processor triggers the page flip, it also registers that as activity, thus trigger the backlights to go high and the timer to restart.

Am I incorrect in my assumption or am I just plain doing something wrong.

Aren't you still limited to 3 or 4gb of ram with XP? I can't remember what the limit was.
