Re: RS232 reader to use with Crestron

Note that the Parallax piece is TTL... you need a MAX232 or similar to convert to RS-232 levels for use with Crestron.

There are a LOT of technologies at play and some country-specific preferences ¨C if there¡¯s already an proximity card system in place, you really need to start first by identifying the technology in use there so that you can [possibly] find a compatible reader and avoid making people tote around two credentials.

?

At my house I started with a GP30-21 reader (manufacturer unknown, and aside from the couple I found on eBay, very hard to source in the US, but apparently a bit more popular in Europe) ¨C these read media 125KHz encoded but unclear as to the specific technology (I suspect EM4100 based on anecdotal evidence ¨C also somewhat difficult to source in the US)

?

I converted, however, to HID Global 5452 readers which read HID-standard 125KHz media, which is far more common ¨C at least in the US ¨C and far easier to source media. In fact, the local university where my girlfriend works, also uses 125KHz media ¨C so when she has a coworker coming to house/pet sit while we¡¯re on vacation, I can just ¡°enroll¡± her University ID card rather than issuing a new token, and voilla--time controlled access and automatic login to my house. HID is also the leader (again, at least in the US) for access control media and readers, which may be a consideration,

?

Also note, though higher security environments, like the museum where my girlfriend also works, are migrating away from the 125KHz platform and moving to the 13.5MHz HID Encrypted [credential <-> reader bidirectional handshake] and/or MiFare platforms ¨C neither of which, of course, is compatable with either the HID 125KHz or EM4100 platforms, though some places are issuing multiple-technology cards that support HID 13.5MHz and HID 125KHz on the same card.

?

If you want to go really cheap, you could build an enclosure for this which uses EM4100 credentials.

?

So long story short ¨C you should start by identifying the type of credential you need/want to use, and then that decision will inform what readers are available to you.

Subject: [Crestron] RS232 reader to use with Crestron

?

All,?

I am looking for prox reader, that can be integrated with podium, connected to Crestron processor trough RS232.?

Idea is, to have instructor come in to podium, swipe their prox card, save system configuration that they use for their classes.?

Then every time they came in, they just swipe their prox, that will activate configuration that was saved on the processor. Let's say prox ID for teacher A will activate stepper, and set lights, projectors, etc etc etc ....
