Re: 3rd party alternative to Crestron Fiber

Paul Cunningham

I can't speak to its tolerance for being submerged in water, but until recently we have used the Corning 006-T88-31-180-A3, which is a 6-strand plenum-rated armored cable with an outside diameter of about .5". It looks and feels like electrical BX wrapped in an orange or teal jacket, and is available in 12-strand as well.

The reason we stopped using it as our go-to fiber is the relatively high cost and the difficulty of pulling it due to size and weight, but it performs great on all DM jobs that we've used it on.

Subject: [Crestron] 3rd party alternative to Crestron Fiber

We have a project where we are running Fiber approx. 500ft, most of it through conduit for Crestron Sonnex applications and network. Not being used for DM yet, but want to insure it's to spec if it ever happens.
I don't trust the conduit being used to stay completely dry. Over time some water could leak into it. Therefore we aren't comfortable using the Crestron Fiber which isn't designed for trenched conduit applications.

The other issue is Crestron brand only comes in 4 strand and our conduit space is limited. I want to have at least 8-12 strands in there for future use, and running 3 of them, even if it was waterproof won't leave enough room for other needs.

So I have been looking for a 12 strand weatherproof bulk fiber option and having a hell of a time. To be sure, there is a ton of it out there. But as soon as I send them the spec on Crestron's Fiber (including the tested to 1550nm rating), all of these re-sellers disappear and I can't get a response.

Does anyone on here successfully use a brand and type for DM applications that is outdoor/waterproof and 8-12 strand in the same spec as Crestron's Fiber? I am looking for a solution and having a hard time finding someone that can provide what we need.

I also considered as a last resort, of running an indoor variety inside of an armored waterproof jacket inside the conduit. Unfortunately that takes up a ton of space again, much more than a bare wire would. Not to mention pulling a 3/4" fat jacket through a 2" conduit would be entertaining and not leave much room.

Any direction or recommendations would be appreciated. Anyone here use 12 strand outdoor fiber for DM with great success? Thanks!

-Ilya
