Yeah, vertical strips are the way to go. But I hate it when your vertical strip comes with a 15' power cord, and it plugs into the UPS at the bottom of the rack about a foot away. You end up with 14' of power cable coiled at the bottom of the rack.
For hiding (reasonably sized) laptop-style power supplies, the new BGR series racks from Middle Atlantic have optional vertical panels that get installed on the sides of the rack, behind the removable side panels. We were able to mount some baluns and some other small devices using those panels and they worked pretty well.

Most of my dealers use the Middle Atlantic vertical rack power and the accompanying short cables.
There are a few schools of thought regarding liability on the "make (shorten) your own" power cords approach if anything goes wrong in a client's install and voiding the UL rating on the cable and the like. I haven't done it in my own rack not because I'm overly conservative [I tend to be] but because the NEMA 5-15P plugs that look halfway decent are way more than I want to pay to whack a couple feet off the cable.

Subject: [Crestron] Re: OT: Stupid F'in Power Cords
Managing power in a rack is really the most difficult part. Does anyone else put new ends on the power cords or buy power cords of various short lengths for rack building?
Power bricks can go the heck... including Crestron power bricks like the one for the CEN-SW-POE5 and the POE supply for the DMPS. Couldn't they have just built that in?
Meh.

Indeed. At least some manufacturers will give you the option of buying a rack mount power supply that can power multiple units though.
