Input Needed: Cultural Stewardship Succession Planning Survey
The Collections Stewardship Succession Planning Initiative is a two-year project of CCAHA, in partnership with Lyrasis, created to actively address the need for leadership development and knowledge transfer in the cultural heritage workforce. Funded by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the initiative will gather data and build professional development resources to support succession planning for collections stewardship staff and volunteers. To inform the creation of these resources, CCAHA and Lyrasis are conducting an online survey to gather data on current succession planning practices and better understand what kind of resources would most benefit the field. Collections Management staff at libraries, archives, museums, and other collecting institutions as well as Arts Administrators and Operations Managers within the arts field are encouraged to respond. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and all responses are kept confidential. The survey can be accessed here and will be open until Monday, October 9th at 5pm ET. Thank you in advance for your participation ¡ªyour input is critical to understanding the needs of museums, libraries, archives, and other collecting institutions and arts organizations.

Work is process oriented involving several steps from preparation to storage in safeguarding the recorded history of Albany County. The incumbent in this class performs routine and repetitious work often involving large quantities of records that are at times oversized and fragile. Work will involve arrangement of materials and sometimes stabilization (cleaning, flattening or rehousing) of records before imaging. This work is performed under the direct supervision of the Archivist. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: ¡¤ Inspect and prepare documents to be scanned; ensure correctness of order, documents are clean, flat, and free of fasteners ¡¤ Set-up and operate scanning equipment ¡¤ Inspect/quality control of processed microfilm and digital images. Operates microfilm reader to proof and inspect microfilms; check against original documents to ensure quality reproductions; ¡¤ Enter imaging data for indexing purposes into inventory tracking system or other image retrieval software; ¡¤ Process master and duplicate microfilm for storage and retrieval; box and label and assign inventory control numbers and description into ACHOR inventory tracking system; ¡¤ Create, store and track digital images. This workshop is geared towards community archives, kinfolk historians, and small groups, particularly those who want to leverage digitization as a means of sharing and preserving community history. In this workshop, we will discuss: Cost-effective and open-source software and technologies for digitization projects How to navigate small spaces, for physical workspaces and digital storage space Best practices for digitization, including examples of scalable workflows How to balance these workflows against limitations of time, budget and space Resource pooling and how this can help achieve unexpected goals This workshop will also include: Demonstrations about material handling and object storage. Participants will work with different types of housings and enclosures that may be encountered during digitization. Attendees will take home a sample starter kit of archival enclosures. DESCRIPTION The Web Archiving, Preservation, and International Archival Affairs Sections are co-hosting a fascinating event on the topic of Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Ukraine's online cultural heritage was at risk. Three library professionals from around the world joined together to create Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO). SUCHO works to create a digital backup of Ukrainian cultural heritage websites from museums, libraries, and public archives and their digital offerings, such as 3D collections and activities for children. Anna Kijas and a panel of volunteers will give an overview of the project, what prompted the creation of SUCHO, their goals for the future of the program, and what we as fellow Archivists can do to help. Volunteers wanted for a crowdsourced transcription project at Union College
Schaffer Library at Union College is looking for volunteers to help us transcribe the Jane Tunis Poultney Bigelow diaries so that we can make these materials available to a wider audience and provide new opportunities for researchers and students. In 2021, Union College¡¯s Schaffer Library received an award from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives to digitize and make available materials from the John Bigelow papers. John Bigelow (1817-1911) had a distinguished career as an editor, writer, statesman, and tireless advocate for the public good. The collection consists of over 22,000 letters of correspondence, scrapbooks, diaries and journals, and other professional and personal papers. Seventeen of the collection¡¯s diaries were written by Jane Bigelow, John¡¯s wife, and represent a significant aspect of the collection. They reflect Jane¡¯s life in New York literary circles, her time in London and Paris, and her interactions with the large circle of Bigelow family, friends, and acquaintances. To take part in the project, you will need to be comfortable with reading cursive handwriting, have an email address, and have an internet connection available to you. No special software or computer setup is required, and transcriptions can be done anywhere you can connect to our web-based crowdsourcing application. Archie Motley Scholarship - Deadline is March 1
The Midwest Archives Conference (MAC) is soliciting applications for the 2023 Archie Motley Memorial Scholarship for Students of Color (http://www.midwestarchives.org/motley). The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to students of color pursuing graduate education in archival administration and to encourage ethnic diversification of the MAC membership and of the archival profession. Two $1,500 scholarships, accompanied by one-year memberships to MAC, will be awarded. To be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must be of African, Arabic, Asian, Indigenous, or Pacific Islander, or Latinx descent; must be a student currently enrolled in or accepted in a graduate, multicourse program in archival administration; and must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in their academic program. Hi everyone, The Technology Strategy for Archives (TS4A) Working Group is holding its first quarterly call of 2023 on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 11am PST/12pm MST/1pm CST/2pm EST for 1 hour. Developed with help from nationally renowned experts in the collections management field, the CMPToolkit guides users step-by-step through the process to create a policy that is uniquely tailored to your collection and designed to meet professional, ethical and legal standards. Geared towards small and mid-level institutions without an active Collections Management Policy (CMP) in place, the CMPToolkit aims to simplify the process of developing a CMP and offer professional support for developing this crucial document.
