Instrument Panel Wiring Diagram

I have put off going behind the instrument panel but now have some items to fix that require access to the various meters/switches.

Has anybody ever done a diagram of just the wires going to the dash, but of course I need a 1981. I can not find a diagram of just the only various parts in many different diagrams. If you don;t know of any I can try asking the group.

What specifically are you planning to work on? A year or so ago I repaired my warning light system and its circuit board. I kept notes so I could write it up for everyone, but it kept getting pushed down the list. I could do it now if it would help.

Jim I have started some extensive schematics of the rear of the 1908 dashboard.
I would say 95% complete at the dash and 70% complete to the other components.
Was working diligently to finish when I had a med setback. All is looking well now.
And can get back into it soon. I can send you what I have and we could complete it together.

Tried hard to keep original right down to correct wire colors. (Whatever that is?)
I learned the 1980's+ are different than earlier mods. So I believe so far?
Give me an email to send some larger files to ant let me know file types you can use.

Wonderful to hear from another nut case. I am delighted to work as a team to complete your start. I have the evperformance book but it does not present the panel in a comprehensive way, you have to hunt all over to find something.

I am most skilled in Visio and would have a learning curve on anything else but I can translate or redo into Visio most everything.
I also try to maintain original colors for the wires.

I have 1981 Mustang Blue VIN 0895 previously belonging to Mike Barney out of Austin.

Lets use my GMAIL account for large file:

If too large use my work email:

Looking forward to hearing from you

I think that is one of the more misunderstood and complicated areas of the unit. Seems most pick up enough to work on the main power and the relay control system but that is much less understood.

If you could share that info I personally believe most owners would benefit, just for the understanding if not for getting the gumption to tackle a behind the dash repair.

Hi Jim,

I will start work on it ASAP.

Any progress Stu?

My car has a extra toggle switch installed that appears to be used to silence the buzzer even when the key is inserted but I am not aware of any diagrams showing the internals of the three little "box like" connectors behind the speedometer. The toggle switch is single pole single throw and goes between upper connector on the middle "box" to the common on the microswitch behind the ignition. That means it switched between the NO and NC position as if the key were not turned.

Good morning Jim,

I have located my notes and will work on them this week. I should be able to get them to you by Monday. My car does not have the box like connectors. If they are the milky nylon connectors, they are probably made by Molex. Electronics houses like Fry's Electronics carry them if you need more. Someone my have installed them so it would be easier to remove the instrument panel?

Have a great day!

BTW, feel free to rattle my chain any time. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Probably did not describe it very well. There are three connectors that look like 120V AC expanders used to increase a wall plug to three vice a single outlet. There are three of them bolted behind the speedomotor and they, among other things are where the buzzer is located the EVPerformance book drawing AM shows this. As shown in that drawing there is a wire from the upper of two connectors on the middle unit to the microswitch on the ignition. I do not have the microswitch so I am assuming the toggle was used to simulate that microswitch or bypass some function.

Look at Photos named fyborg photos and picture "1980 electrical 3" to see what I am trying to explain.

Those appear to me to be relays. I do not remember them being on my car. My car does not have the buzzer or the micro-switch on the ignition switch.

The only thing I can suggest WRT the toggle switch is to trace the wires and find out what they go to. I do not have any experience that would shed any light on the question.

Best of luck with this one,

Stu

Hello Jim,

I've attached two drawings for your preview. I am not sending them to the group because they are rough. My intention is
to produce nice neat drawings with appropriate explanatory text. If you have any questions or comments, let me know.

Stu

I know this topic is 9 years old, but my problem is not new.
Do these drawings exist, and if they do can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks ?again for the help.

Attached is the complete service manual

Thanks for the manual.
I had a quick look thru it and I think it will answer my questions.

someone in one of the facebook?groups had redrew the dash wiring on a single sheet. I can't find it now.? If I find it I will?let you know
