Re: Brakes are utterly useless--how do I fix them?

Last I heard they were used for industrial carts. Like Taylor Dunn?

I don't know where they got their disc brakes, but around that time I was working on a small prototype car and we used disc brakes that were designed for industrial machinery - stopping lathes and that sort of thing.? We cut our own discs from 1/4" mild steel plate and used those calipers for our 800 pound car, and it worked OK for the load they had to carry.? I wouldn't be surprised if Sebring CitiCar had done more or less the same thing.? Ours had definitely never been proven out for automotive use.

The disks about 7 inches around and 1/4 inch thick. They cant take much thermal energy before overheating. Mine deffently cannot. I dont know if they could be used on an aircraft but I would not use them. You can press on that pedal all day but with a single caliper set up, you are looking to break things. My car had a caliper crack at the piston to the back. Broke it in two.?

Now, from what I understand the disc brakes were some aircraft leftover?? I've often thought that if it can stop a plane... Maybe the master was not sized properly to begin with from the drawing board/parts bin

Ha, yeah, when I heard the term "lock them up" I knew something was different. The disks are awful and take forever to stop, they squeal untill you hit a bump that separates them from the disks. And they also burn and fade easily. But the plus is that I dont think you have to adjust them due to the way they work.?

Sorry Nicholas! I thought you had a later model. My response applies to the later 4 drum setup. I've never worked with the disc brakes but I hear they are more sub standard than the 4 drum.?

How do you adjust the brakes? Do all the cars have this need? Mine is a 76 with disks in the front. Do you need to adjust disks? Or only the drums. I am a little confused.?

When I adjust my brakes I get them all as close to equal as I can. Then I go make a few stops. If it's pulling a bit I tighten the side it pulls away from a notch or two till it brakes straight. Pedal height will be determined by shoe adjustment. The backs should be adjusted too, but they are annoying since the wheel comes off to do it.?

Hi all, thanks for the responses.

I've bled them (of course). They all run free of bubbles (Except the one with the leaking cylinder), but the front brakes still have old rusty fluid in them, so I should probably flush them.

I do have the dual cylinder (thank goodness), so it wasn't hard or expensive to replace.

Bob, if your car has the dual-cylinder system, the master cylinder isn't too hard to find, and I have a part number for it.

Nicholas, I do mean foot to the floor. I don't think the pedal actually touches the floor, but it goes as far as the master cylinder will mechanically allow it.

I tried readjusting the brakes (front only) to be tighter (probably pretty close to 1 rev) and noticed that they drag unevenly.. Is this normal? (I suspect the brake shoes are unevenly worn, since the brakes were (I think) pretty out-of-adjustment when I adjusted them. I do have sources for new shoes (I did a bunch of internet-sleuthing to find them), but they're still $50 for a set of 4, so I'd like to try working with the ones I have, first.

Of course, tightening the brakes didn't help any.

I think my next steps will be to flush the lines, maybe just by opening the bleeder on one at a time and letting the reservoir run down (I'll top it off now and then).

I might also order a new set of rubber seals for the rear cylinder that's leaking, and go through taking the axle out and working around it all over again...

For a long term solution, I think I'd like to somehow incorporate rudimentary regenerative or plug braking. Save expensive brake parts, and it would help the braking power of the car a lot.

(Fun fact: If you have a contactor-based system, you're all set up for regenerative braking already. Just stick it in reverse while driving forwards, and apply the accelerator lightly! It worked for me, but I don't think the BMSs on my Li-ion batteries liked it a lot... Don't actually try this, since it's terribly uncontrolled and probably bad for your batteries.)
