Below is a message to the Mayor of Santa Rosa, his response,
and the response reply of a letter asking that the City of
Santa Rosa have public EV charging.
Obtaining public EV charging installation funds is easy from
the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD)
Installation of an AVCON powerpak and a 5-20 gfi duplex
receptacle is cost effective and supports the local as well
as visiting EVs (level 2 and level 1 charging). The public
EV charging spot needs to be located in a non preferential
parking area (not up front where gas car will want to park)
and in a shopping center if possible to let the EV driver
spend their money while the EV is charging (give them
something to do) as stated on
Anyone that would be using this proposed public EV charging
station should contact Nick, and drop a friendly note to the
Mayor. The Mayor may not know how may EV drivers are really
out here, and how much business we can generate for Santa
Rosa.

Subject: Electric vehicle support
Mayor Martini,
I am writing to let you know that my wife and I recently
relocated our home and businesses to Santa Rosa from San
Diego. One of the reasons for selecting this city was our
impression that it was a strong supporter of alternative
fuel vehicles.
We drive a Ford Th!nk City electric car, so we thought this
would be the perfect location. Imagine our dismay, then,
when we discovered that there isn't a single public charging
station in Santa Rosa! Both Petaluma and Napa outlet stores
have publicly accessible charging stations and Vacaville,
Sacramento and San Francisco have multiple units.
In this post-9-11 world, this would seem like the ideal
opportunity to support 1) reduced oil-dependency, 2) the
lessening of pollution and 3) show your administration's
pursuit of clean air for all citizens of Sonoma County.
I hope that I can meet with you, at your convenience, to
discuss this matter further.
With best wishes,
Dr Nick Carter,
Owner, npc Imaging and Th!nk EV driver,
3000 Cleveland Avenue, Suite 209,
Santa Rosa CA 95403-2117

Thanks for the info and suggestions. I see that you have
copied the rest of the Council and the City Manager and I
will follow up with Jeff on Tuesday when I see him.
If you have any specific information regarding the charging
stations I would appreciate having it.
I do know that on Tuesday's agenda, the city is approving
the purchase of a number of the "hybrid" cars and we do
operate electric meter maid cars along with natural gas
vehicles.
I would imagine that we would be supportive of locating
charging stations as appropriate.
I will let you know what I find out.
Mike Martini

I can certainly supply any information that you require.
The city already has some charging stations, so opening
these for public use would be a big step forward. Assisting
malls and public parking garages with installations would be
another positive move.
I'm glad to hear that you are buying some gas cars with
better fuel economy. I'm aware that you operate natural gas
cars. Ironically, two of them are regularly parked in the
spaces equipped with chargers for electric vehicles at the
city's Stony Point location. Also, depending on who you ask,
these chargers are *not* for public use. My issue is with
the publicly available infrastructure and the support for
electric vehicles or rather the lack thereof. I commend the
city on its own use of alternative fuel vehicles including
the Nissan Hyperminis.

With best wishes,
Nick Carter
