Hardware for new node

I have the opportunity to update a local digipeater with a node (and maybe add a WAN frequency as well). Should I use BPQ for the node and if so, what type of hardware should I use for the node?

I run BPQ32 on a windows netbook, with a dra 50 sound mode. That supports both packet digipeater an netrom node an VARA FM for digipeating to my system from Gambill
Mountain State Park.

I sat up a LinBPQ node a year ago with a Raspberry Pi 4 and Direwolf for VHF Packet. Eventually it will have a Winlink RMS but Internet is slow to show up. I also used the small UPS in the following link:

It has been working well but I do know there will be some challenges when we add VARA HF.? VARA does work with Wine and I am working out some scripts at home QTH to autostart, check for the radio, etc.

Radio is Kenwood TM-271 and a Rigblaster Plus for the interface with a serial PTT. Both were rotated out of service from the county EOC.

If you are not familiar with Linux, sticking with a Windows based computer might be easier. I think good results can be had on both platforms, but it has been a challenge for me to work with Linux. If I wasn't retired, I don't think I would have had the time to go up the learning curve. The caution with Windows is to watch out for those big-box store cheap laptops. They tend to be bloated with teaser software packages and junk that gets in the way.

Hi, Eric:

If this is a single radio digipeater,
I recommend keeping it as a digipeater only and
not a node.

If this station will have more than 1 radio, then a node could be of benefit.

If you use BPQ as a node, then you could use the resources of this email reflector for guidance.
Else, if you do not use BPQ for the node, then you may need to go elsewhere for guidance.
