VARA PTT

From the document at

The first line defines the IP address and Port of the VARA TNC, an optional PTT parameter, and an optional PATH to the VARA exe file. If PTT is omitted, VOX operation is assumed.

Given VARA HF has its own PTT settings, why specify PTT in BPQ? For example, I have VARA set to use a serial port on the radio for PTT (using RTS).

My BPQ port for VARA has no PTT specified, and things seem to work fine. In other words PTT is omitted, but it's not using VOX.

Perhaps something changed after the documentation was written?

Thanks,

if COMPORT rts/dtr is used to toggle ptt, the first program to 'claim' the comport has it locked down and no other program can use it.

so if running vara alongside soundmodem on the same radio port, one or the other will not be able to ptt.

letting bpq handle ptt solves that problem.

NOW, if you have a MODIFIED cm108 dongle, the gpio pin is used to toggle ptt and is NOT locked by whatever program uses it first.
so that setup, you can have each program toggle ptt on its own.

op has a serial cable for cat/ptt and a non modified dongle (no ptt line available) setup.

good luck all,

There's no com port specified in the VARA port in BPQ, however, only "PTT DTR" as one example.

so if running vara alongside soundmodem on the same radio port, one or the other will not be able to ptt.

I can see that working if CAT control is used for PTT, but I'm not seeing how BPQ knows what COM port is being used for PTT (with RTS or DTR).
In my case I'm using a serial port splitting program to allow QtSM and VARA to use the same serial port for PTT.

Yes, that worked for me when I was using external sound instead of a built-in sound card, but I used INTERLOCK so that BPQ would prevent VARA and QtSM from colliding.?

If you are referring to NP4JN in the other thread, yes, that was not clear in the first message posted.

good luck all,

Lee,

Yea that option was not always available, in earlier revisions. I never noticed until the latest updates but I do not set it. It seems to be default to VOX tho I dont use VOX. BPQ does the PTT handling.
