Re: BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
Kayne,
?
Thanks for the pointers. I confirmed that I can establish a successful outbound VARA HF connection via the ATT and C commands. It seems that the problem is just with inbound connections into the BBS over the VARA HF port.
?
In the meantime, I'll take a look at:

BPQ32 APRS not Digipeating all packets.
Hello
?
I run BPQ32 APRS in various ports, port 2 is APRS and BBS 145.090 in the same channel, port 4 is APRS 144.390, port HF VARA HF etc.
?
I have noticed that in VHF port 2 & 4 not all packets are being Digipeating.? I see they are sent to IS but not via RF.
?
Is there a limitation or restrictions on packets that get Digi on the application?
?
Thanks

As for your other question. Yes, I am on 64-bit linux, but I have the 32-bit binaries installed. I am currently using the latest stable version of LinBPQ. I will try using the Beta 64-bit version of LinBPQ after work and see if it allows inbound connections to properly connect.

Re: BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
One can also use an AGW client like easyterm with bpq's AGW emulator/server. From there you can connect to node 'SWITCH' and issue the C or ATT commands as needed. Latency I am not sure, but VARA can be CPU intensive. I have at least one 'intel' vm here that VARA will hang sometimes, cpu catches up some seconds later and packets come in bunched up after the delay. It was exacerbated when I tried to run it and WinRPR at the same time on my old i5 gaming notebook that I sometimes take in the truck when going mobile. So if you have something like 60-80% cpu used in VARA on the indicator it seems to be when it occurs here. I would probably test a few other modems with that latency issue. But also BPQ can do hamlib itself so you may not NEED to run rigctld and you may have better results with BPQs builtin version. That is a hard call because it is different depending on your radio hardware and you have to find what works the best for your set up. |
Re: BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
Hello Gaston,
* I am able to connect using VARA HF to multiple Winlink RMS stations ? using Pat from both the BBS station as well as from my other client ? station that I have been using to access the BBS. This leads me to ? believe the VARA and the radios are correctly configured on both ? systems. What about connecting outbound from the BPQ node to either Winlink RMS stations or to anything at the far end via VARA HF?? One way would be to connect QtTermTCP to BPQ and try connecting out from there. Normally one connects QtTermTCP to BPQ using the "FBBPORT" value configured in the telnet port in bpq32.cfg. To manually connect outbound, you would first attach to the port, e.g. "ATT 1", then issue the connect command, e.g. "C CALL-10" where "CALL-10" is the station at the far end. That assumes the radio is already on the intended frequency and in the intended mode. 73, Lee K5DAT |
Re: BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
It might be worth a try to download the latest beta version of linbpq. I assume you are not on a RPi/ARM machine, and due to being on Ubuntu 22.4, need the 64 bit version. 73, Lee K5DAT On Tue, Jan 28, 2025 at 8:48?AM Gaston Gonzalez via <kt7run=[email protected]> wrote:

Mark,

I am running VARA HF under WINE on Ubuntu, so that path would likely not work. I'll do some research and see how this should be specified given that VARA is installed under: /home/ham/.wine32/drive_c/VARA/VARA.exe.
?
I tailed /var/log/syslog on the LinBPQ station and see the following while attempting a connection:
?
Jan 28 09:45:38 shack LINBPQ[139282]: BPQ32 Heartbeat Buffers 999#015

I wonder if there may be an issue with latency in using hamlib. My rig control process is started as follows. This works fine with every other digital mode.

Re: BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
This may not help, but try and allow BPQ to start your Vara Modem instance by adding PATH=xxxxxxxx to your ADDR configuration line. It could be a mismatch in the control port setting in BPQ (on that line) and your Vara Modem.
?
Any clues to it in the syslog?

Feature Request - Send new messages
Hello John G8BPQ, I'm looking for an enhancement to the "Send new messages without waiting for poll timer" functionality. I'd like to see a hold-off timer associated with sending new messages. This would be a one-time hold-off as opposed to the normal forwarding interval. This would be particularly useful on HF in cases when you want the first attempt to forward to happen relatively soon but not immediately. If one sets the normal forwarding interval fairly low in order to send a new message fairly soon, a problem can arise in HF when conditions are not good. In that case the BBS will try over and over to resend at relatively short intervals, which is not good for either the radio or spectrum utilization. I think this would be a nice enhancement for internet based forwarding also. I've found if I check the box circled above on too many forwarding partners so that lots of simultaneous forwarding is launched for the same message, I end up with "line begins with F" type errors on some BBS's. I probably butchered that description a bit. Thanks, Lee K5DAT |

Re: BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
Mark,
?
Thanks for the speedy reply and for catching that. I adjusted the configuration to keep KT7RUN-2 as the NODECALL, but changed the BBS application callsign to KT7RUN-3.
?
```
APPLICATION 1,BBS,,KT7RUN-3,TTP2,255
```
?
The VARA application window now shows two callsigns listed in the title after linbpq connects: KT7RUN-2 KT7RUN-3. I am attempting to connecting to it as KT7RUN from my other station.?
I tried both callsigns when attempting to connect.?
?
Unfortunately, the same issue persists. Both VARA HF modems just ACKs back and forth when using either KT7RUN-2 or KT7RUN-3, but I never get a connection into BPQ. Also, there is no similar back and forth of the ACKs when I use the NODEALIAS (i.e. TTP2). This makes my wonder if I am missing something on the BPQ side of the configuration for the VARA port.
?
P.S. John Wiseman, apologies for misspelling your last name in my original post.
?
Gaston KT7RUN |
Re: BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
My once over of your cfg file tells me that you are trying to use KT7RUN-2 for the call of both your node (NODECALL) and your BBS (APPLICATION 1)
?
Can't do that.? Change your NODECALL to KT7RUN-7 and try it.? It may cure one issue and bring up something else though...
?
?
Do not use either of those calls when you identify yourself when conencting, either.
Most call sign usage must be unique calls.

BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
Hello All,
?
I tried my best to solve the following problem on my own, but I am spinning my
wheels a bit, so I decided to try this forum. If the VARA-MODEM group is better
suited for this topic, please let me know. My apologies for the long post, but I?
wanted to capture as much of the context as possible in the following write-up.
?
Any help would be appreciated as I am trying to bring back the BBS scene to the
Southwest. I am very new to BPQ with only two months of experience, so please
excuse my ignorance.

(If John Wiesman is reading, thank you for developing BPQ and QtTermTCP!)

# BPQ VARA Modem Port Issue
?
## PROBLEM STATEMENT
?
I currently have LinBPQ (6.0.24.1) running under Ubuntu 22.10 with ports?
configured for VHF 1200 baud, UHF 9600 baud, and HF 300 baud packet. All of these work great and users are able to connect using QtTermTCP. I am trying to introduce a more reliable HF link into the BBS and have
been experimenting with the addition of a VARA HF port. However, all my attempts to connect to the BBS over the VARA port via the VARA Terminal or QtTermTCP only result in both VARA modem simply exchanging ACKs until the maximum 15 attempts is reached. ?
My first naive question is if it is even possible to use the VARA Terminal to connect
to BPQ over VARA? I have been unsuccessful with QtTermTCP, too.
?
## SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
?
### LINBPQ
?
To simplify the troubleshooting, I am running LinBPQ and VARA on the
same machine. However, the goal is to run LinBPQ on one computer and VARA HF on another computer on the local network. This is why I am? using Hamlib (rigctld) to control the PTT. ?
The following is the BPQ configuration with the Telnet and packet ports
removed. ?

## NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
?
* When attempting to connect via QtTermTCP or the VARA Terminal
? applications, there is an exchange between both VARA modems in which ? only the ACKs are sent and received by both VARA modems. After 15 ? 15 attempts, the client running the terminal software will ID via CW ? and the connection is disconnected. ?

? (KT7RUN-2), but not the NODEALIAS (TTP2). However, The NODEALIAS is? ? accessible when the BBS is accessed over any of the packet ports. ?
* I manually start VARA HF on the node with BPQ, then start `linbpq`. I
? can see that the LinBPQ has access to VARA over port 8300. ?

Re: IP over rf ax25 (vhf link)
Ok, I'll take a stab at this for you.
?
While nothing is impossible, and there may be something out there that will do it, AXIP over RF is normally done on microwave frequencies 2.4ghz and up. I don't see any reason shy it could not be done at any frequency though.
?
The IPGATEWAY function basically creates an interface to a hardware device, such as a WiFi router with custom firmware, that provides that IP address and interfaces with your BPQ node.? That WiFi device is only limited by it's range, whether it is across a room, ranch, or or for miles. It could be on most any frequency allowed by FCC rules.? Most of the time the WiFi device is modified to use amateur radio frequencies and are within the power limits of amateur radio rules.
?
I do not know of any method that will say, link a VHF port to your computer and use an IP address over VHF in the manner I think you are believing. However, once that IPGATEWAY has been established it basically becomes a port of your node just like your VHF is a port of your node.? So, someone connecting to your VHF port will have access to your gateway and can use that path.? I'm sure this is not a completely accurate decription but I should give you an idea.

Hi everyone
?
just playing around with ip over radio and wondering if there is a snipet of the bpq32.cfg file that shows what goes in the port declaration so it is assigned an ipaddress¡¡?
?
also it looks like the ipgateway block is in the general section as it seems to define the ipinfo to your home network?
?
not that i am doing it yet what is involved in setting up an Ampernet tunnel¡¡
?
sorry lots of questions!

Re: NTS Messages
Since you are using Windows, set your monitor window to see only your AXIP port, and Monitor UI only. Clear the screen with Edit - Clear Monitor Window.
?
After a while you will see only the ID beacons of your forwarding partners.? Look and see if any advertise RRI or traffic handling.? I see several on mine and forward traffic with them as required.
