Thanks for your response, you are likely right. I did try HELO but that failed also. I didn't packet capture to see the exchange as I decided to try very old school telnet (on port 25) :-)

Putty (from my Windows 11 machine) connects and gives me "220 BPQMail SMTP Server ready" but doesn't respond to any commands (e.g HELO, AUTH LOGIN).

I tried TeraTerm (as it's easier to send LF not CR) and am now getting responses. I am now at least getting "535 authorization failed" when I try AUTH LOGIN. So progress!

Wrt the python library, I'll come back to that once I get a terminal to play nicely.
