AI Generated images 4
I have been having a play around with software for generating images using AI. Here are my pictures of radio telescopes sent to Mars and Moon by NASA or ESA or perhaps BAA RAG! Also an alien artifact found in cave on Mars and an even stranger abstract picture of who knows what!? Perhaps an alien radio telescope?! (C) Andrew Thornett Andy

Meteor echo of the day 2
Today's screenshot illustrates clearly the directional and linearly polarised nature of meteor echoes at the wavelength of 6m. The illuminating signal is Right Hand circular polarised. The three echoes seen by the NW Hampshire Horizontally polarised system are unseen by the NW Hampshire vertically polarised receiver. They are seen by the Norman Lockyer receiver but not by the Armagh receiver. Note also how the Doppler shifts differ between NW Hampshire and Norman Lockyer. We will be investigating whether this can be used to triangulate the location and trajectory of the meteors although the directional nature of these echoes will make that challenging.

Anomalous SID 2024-05-17 10
Yesterday at 18:07UTC I recorded a clear SID event. There is no corresponding solar flare at this time in the NOAA record and the X-ray flus is flat. The attached plot shows the signal for Anthorn Skelton and Ramsloh. The green trace for 19.6kHz. 20.9kHz and 22.1kHz is recorded using a 0.4m loop aerial and a sound card. The blue trace for 19.6kHz (1.0m loop aerial) and 23.4kHz (0.6m loop aerial) are recorded using UKRAA VLF receivers. Did any other observers record the same event? If so was it on the same frequencies or did other stations show the same event. Many thanks Andrew Thomas

Meteor Detection using a Raspberry Pi 9
Hi All, I had a brief conversation with John Cook at the BAA Winchester Weekend about the feasibility of using a Raspberry Pi, SDR dongle and appropriate software to detect meteors, he suggested I post here. The last time I did meteor detection I was using a custom script I¡¯d created in SpectrumLab (see here https://crayfordmanorastro.com/radio/meteor-observations-with-radio/) with an X86 laptop and handheld scanner. At the time, I had investigated using a Raspberry Pi but they were pretty new, x86 software wasn¡¯t compatible and the project didn¡¯t go anywhere. Since then, USB SDR Dongles have been invented, Raspberry Pis are now on version 5 and the Pi 5 is significantly more powerful than the Win 98 Laptop I was using, has more memory, faster disk and network access etc. Windows has also come to ARM, I believe there is a Just in Time (JIT) re-complier that recompiles x86 software on the fly (JIT compilers are very fast), but I have no experience of this, also Linux SW has developed a huge amount so there might even be a mature Linux software solution (my main Laptop is Linux). Anyway - I¡¯m now thinking of trying again, creating a meteor detector to compliment the visual meteor detector my Astro Society (Crayford) already runs. The concept is a Raspberry Pi, USB SDR, and appropriate software. I¡¯d save the files to a NAS with remote cloud access so members can share any post processing/collation for reporting purposes. Do you know if anyone is already doing radio meteor detection on a Raspberry Pi? If so can you point me to the details? I¡¯m also interested in compatible USB SDR¡¯s and Compatible Analysis Software (like Spectrum Lab) I¡¯d like to know this is possible because I don¡¯t want to reinvent the wheel and I don¡¯t want to spend my societies cash finding out it can¡¯t be done! :-) Thanks, Simon.

Yesterday's echo of the day. 2
Sorry folks I got it all wrong regarding yesterday's image. It wasn't noise ! Because we are only looking at +/-100Hz on the live stream I didn't recognise this as a reflection of the beacon signal from Aurora. Martin who looked at it with a wider band width sent me this image which should have been instantly recognisable as the beacon signal reflecting off Aurora. Brian

Meteor echo of the day
There's been a lot of meteor activity during the Eta Aquarid but today's snap is of unusual high noise level being observed at three of the receiver sites. Associated with the solar activity ? Brian PS Malvern has an indoor antenna and lower sensitivity.

Our established Receiver Live Stream is currently OFF while we move the processing to our new server and establish confidence in it. Today's screenshot is from the new server under test. Note that the frequency span displayed has been increased from +/-30Hz to +/- 100Hz . While the live display is not ideal for showing the detail of head echoes almost 100Hz of Doppler shift can be seen on the echo from the NW Hampshire H Pol receiver in this screenshot. System developments continue. Brian

Hello Folks We are in the process of moving the receivers in our network to a new server. As they move they will disappear from the existing server an re appear on the new one. We will re-direct the web page to the new server ASAP and may provide both links for a while. Brian

Meteor beacon project + echo of the day
Hello Folks Despite my best and very prolonged efforts we have not found a site in Scotland for our third primary receiver. Before I give up can anyone help ? What is needed is a reasonably radio quiet site with no nearby 6 m transmissions, with power, (10 W or less) and an internet connection. The data stream is about the same as an audio stream so not excessive. Ideally the site would be a minimum of 200km North of the beacon which is located near Mansfield 53.10N, 1.22W. An astronomy society with a dark sky observing site would be ideal. We would need someone local who is radio "savvy" to check the site and help with installation. A locally sourced mast of 3 or 4m would be handy but we can supply all other materials. We are trying to achieve a range of different reflection geometries for each meteor event. When we can make observations from a sufficient number of different directions it may be possible, by using Doppler measurements, to calculate the trajectory and hence radiant of the meteor. In the mean time we are working towards capturing and recording echoes from the receivers in the network together with precision timing so that events viewed from different directions can be correlated with precision. This screenshot was grabbed while typing this message. Brian

Meteor ? echo of the day
A key objective of providing the online "live" display at https://ukmeteorbeacon.org/beaconclient/ is to enable anyone with an interest in meteors and the ionosphere to make their own observations and draw their own conclusions. The images I capture and put here are just ones I happen to see when working at the computer or passing by and notice something of interest. I run a separate screen for the live displays so I don't have to stop work. Today's screenshot shows an interesting event seen at all 3 locations, Norman Lockyer, Armagh and NW Hampshire. It was particularly strong at Armagh. Note the different Doppler shifts. We are approaching the Sporadic E season. What are your thoughts on these echoes ? Brian
