U3A Course R09 (Bible) 2021 Term 2 Draft Notes (Romans)
2
G'day all, Term 2 of 2021 will start soon. Before it does, however, I will be receiving my 1st COVID-19 vaccination and hopefully my 2nd. In the unlikely event that I suffer an adverse reaction to the Astra Zeneca vaccine, as quite a few people apparently have worldwide (including in Brisbane), I wanted to leave you with my draft PowerPoints for the book of Romans since they're now complete (as first drafts). They are available from the unofficial home page Unofficial U3A Course Resources where you'll find them listed as Term 2 2021 Contingency. Be aware, though, that it's a big file (48 mB) containing the PDFs of 213 slides (so far). Please don't read anything into this about my mental health or whatever. I'm just taking a tiny precaution since a few hours went into these slides. I'll see you again when Term 2 kicks off. I'm looking forward to it. Blessings, Ray

U3A Course R09 (Bible) Zoom Experience Discussion
2
Hi Merlene, Thanks for sharing your experience with Zoom in other classrooms. It's good to consider the experience of others. Let me add one Zoom class that I was in that was a bit different: the focus was a short (say 20-30 minute) film or presentation with heavy discussion afterwards. There were usually around 7-10 in each session (out of 30 enrolled) and the subject was philosophy, so interaction was necessary. What I noticed was that the same 2 or 3 people dominated the discussion, and their points were often contentious. I also noticed that few others (including myself) felt comfortable raising legit queries during the scheduled time. The way that I dealt with that was to hang around after class until the majority left and the 2 or 3 were still going on and I felt comfortable adding my 2 cents worth. Regarding our class, Merlene, I think the black screens tend to reflect people using mobile phones rather than people wishing to remain anonymous. In fact, I know who they are. On another point, I have never noticed anyone in our Zoom sessions (other than myself, perhaps) looking anything other than their very best, even when logging in from a hospital bed. Your comments about the yellow hand signal (there's something sinister sounding about that) and the chat function indicate that we could make better use of those features. I'll perhaps write a brief training paper on getting the most out of Zoom for next term. Thanks. I wanted to add a joke about giving classes in Spanish, but alas I've already hit my one-joke per post limit. Por favor, acepte mis más sinceras disculpas. Blessings, Ray On Wednesday, 7 April 2021, 12:05:59 pm AEST, Merlene <merlene@...> wrote: Hi Ray, At the close of our last session for Term 1, you invited comments from students as to their experiences with other Zoom classes. Only occasionally do others in all of my other Zoom classes chose to mute their appearances. In my Spanish Zoom class, by the very nature of its subject, we are invited to give a small story in Spanish of course, with English translation. I know Zoom can be difficult for all of us, but as we try it and explore a bit further from our comfort zones in it, it certainly is rewarding and honestly, not that much different at all from being in real life. Except, we all have to accept that like camera shots, it never shows us as our real selves, and sometimes not very flattering. Accept that – we’ll all the same, a bit tatty at times on the outside, but very good on the inside. Be a bit adventurous, I say, and enjoy what we have been given. Kind regards to all – hoping I haven’t offended anyone. Merlene

U3A Course R09 (Bible) Term 1 Session 10 Notes are posted

G'day all, Thanks for your encouragement during this now completed U3A term. All course notes are now posted as PDFs. The three books examined in Term 1 - Lamentations, 1 Timothy, and 2 Timothy - each blessed me tremendously. In Term 2, which begins for R09 at 10:45 am on Thursday, 22 April, we'll study Paul's Epistle to the Romans, the longest and most systematically reasoned of his letters. Written 8-10 years before 2 Timothy, Paul announces the letter's theme in Romans 1:16-17: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 'The just shall live by faith.' ” Evangelist Ray Stedman called Romans the master key to Scripture because it tells how God can save the whole person: body, soul, and spirit. Het notes that this isn't accomplished by how rich you are, how much you know, or any skills or capabilities that you have; but solely through a personal relationship with Jesus. About 500 BC, Socrates wrote to Plato that, "It may be that the Deity can forgive sins, but I do not see how." Well, he didn't have the book of Romans, but we do! This is a book that turned the ancient world upside down, and many individuals consider Romans to be the most important and rewarding book in the Bible. Zoom details will be provided before our first session. In the meantime, please consider signing up for the course on the U3A website https://www.u3abrisbane.org.au so that U3A Admin is aware of the interest in R09. Thanks. Thanks again. Blessings, Ray

U3A Course R09 (Bible) 2 Timothy ready to go live in 60 min

G'day all, Our final session for Term 1 - 2021 will start at 10:45 am. Following on from our study of Paul's First Epistle to Timothy written at the end of his first imprisonment in Rome under house arrest, several years later Paul has been re-arrested and now is in chains awaiting execution, and Second Timothy is his last known letter. We'll briefly examine the cells where Paul was held, which were located a short distance from the Law Courts. Interestingly, imprisonment was not a sentence under Roman statutory law, although it permitted detention as in Paul's house arrest, debt bondage, and hard labour in mills, mines, quarries, or work camps. Incarceration (publica custodia) was intended to be a temporary measure prior to trial or execution. In general, long-term incarceration was more widely practiced in the later Empire, and from the 4th century, under Christian rule. We'll also briefly examine some relatively recent evidence of Paul's final resting place. Hope to see you soon.
