Oh, I hope I didn’t offend anyone in our Bible class by my remark that Zoom
doesn’t always show us in our “most flattening”.? This comment was prompted
by the fact that unfortunately a student in one of my Spanish classes refused to
use Zoom because of her how she looked on screen.? I was very saddened by
that thought, as she was a valuable contributor to the class.? I certainly
haven’t seen any hint of that attitude in our Bible class – to the contrary,
everyone is more interested in learning about the Bible than how they may look
on Zoom.??? I also didn’t realise that some people use mobile
phones on Zoom.? That must be extremely difficult.? I am spoilt by
being able to use a very big computer screen, as well as my laptop
(side-by-side) which makes Zoom lessons very easy to follow and navigate – a
luxury that probably some students don’t have, and also for which I give
profound thanks.?
?
In conclusion, whatever you are doing – it works!? We all enjoy your
classes and get so much spiritual food from them.? That is the most
important aspect of all.

Let me add one Zoom class that I was in that
was a bit different: the focus was a short (say 20-30 minute) film or
presentation with heavy discussion afterwards.? There were usually around
7-10 in each session (out of 30 enrolled) and the subject was philosophy, so
interaction was necessary.? What I noticed was that the same 2 or 3 people
dominated the discussion, and their points were often contentious.? I also
noticed that few others (including myself) felt comfortable raising legit
queries during the scheduled time.? The way that I dealt with that was to
hang around after class until the majority left and the 2 or 3 were still going
on and I felt comfortable adding my 2 cents worth.
?
Regarding our class, Merlene, I think the black
screens tend to reflect people using mobile phones rather than people wishing to
remain anonymous.? In fact, I know who they are.?
?
On another point, I have never noticed anyone
in our Zoom sessions (other than myself, perhaps) looking anything other than
their very best, even when logging in from a hospital bed.

Your comments about the yellow hand signal
(there's something sinister sounding about that) and the chat function indicate
that we could make better use of those features.? I'll perhaps write a
brief training paper on getting the most out of Zoom for next term.?

Conversely, in my larger evening Zoom sessions, after the Presenter –
usually not the Convenor – has given their Story, participants are invited to
ask questions or elaborate on what they have heard.? This period can last
from 5 minutes to even up to 20 minutes – and a lot of information is
exchanged.?

If there is difficulty trying to find a time to Squeeze ourself in without
being rude, there are a couple of buttons at the very bottom of our Zoom screens
that allow either a text message (called a Chat) to be sent to Presenter, or
All, or one person, – also another button immediately to the right of that one
(still in the middle of the bottom tab) that allows you to add a Yellow put
up your hand Signal, which then shows about your face, or picture, and
remains until your remove it.

I know Zoom can be difficult for all of us, but as we try it and explore a
bit further from our comfort zones in it, it certainly is rewarding and
honestly, not that much different at all from being in real life.? Except,
we all have to accept that like camera shots, it never shows us as our real
selves, and sometimes not very flattering.? Accept that – we’ll all the
same, a bit tatty at times on the outside, but very good on the inside.? Be
a bit adventurous, I say, and enjoy what we have been given.
