Re: U3A Course R09 (Bible) Zoom Experience Discussion

Dear Ray,
?
Oh, I hope I didn’t offend anyone in our Bible class by my remark that Zoom doesn’t always show us in our “most flattening”.? This comment was prompted by the fact that unfortunately a student in one of my Spanish classes refused to use Zoom because of her how she looked on screen.? I was very saddened by that thought, as she was a valuable contributor to the class.? I certainly haven’t seen any hint of that attitude in our Bible class – to the contrary, everyone is more interested in learning about the Bible than how they may look on Zoom.??? I also didn’t realise that some people use mobile phones on Zoom.? That must be extremely difficult.? I am spoilt by being able to use a very big computer screen, as well as my laptop (side-by-side) which makes Zoom lessons very easy to follow and navigate – a luxury that probably some students don’t have, and also for which I give profound thanks.?
?
In conclusion, whatever you are doing – it works!? We all enjoy your classes and get so much spiritual food from them.? That is the most important aspect of all.
?
Gracias por tu respuesta franca,

Hi Merlene,
?
Thanks for sharing your experience with Zoom in other classrooms.? It's good to consider the experience of others.?
?
Let me add one Zoom class that I was in that was a bit different: the focus was a short (say 20-30 minute) film or presentation with heavy discussion afterwards.? There were usually around 7-10 in each session (out of 30 enrolled) and the subject was philosophy, so interaction was necessary.? What I noticed was that the same 2 or 3 people dominated the discussion, and their points were often contentious.? I also noticed that few others (including myself) felt comfortable raising legit queries during the scheduled time.? The way that I dealt with that was to hang around after class until the majority left and the 2 or 3 were still going on and I felt comfortable adding my 2 cents worth.
?
Regarding our class, Merlene, I think the black screens tend to reflect people using mobile phones rather than people wishing to remain anonymous.? In fact, I know who they are.?
?
On another point, I have never noticed anyone in our Zoom sessions (other than myself, perhaps) looking anything other than their very best, even when logging in from a hospital bed.Emoji?
?
Your comments about the yellow hand signal (there's something sinister sounding about that) and the chat function indicate that we could make better use of those features.? I'll perhaps write a brief training paper on getting the most out of Zoom for next term.? Thanks.

I wanted to add a joke about giving classes in Spanish, but alas I've already hit my one-joke per post limit.? Por favor, acepte mis más sinceras disculpas. Emoji

?
During the last term I attended one other U3A Zoom class, as well as 3 other Zoom meetings on Genealogy, Writing Family History and DNA.? My experience with all has been very positive with many instances of interaction from participants.
?
Whilst I appreciate there are some students in the class that prefer to keep their identity hidden for whatever reasons – and I respect that decision – it makes it difficult for the Presenter when looking at a black square with a name in the centre.? Only occasionally do others in all of my other Zoom classes chose to mute their appearances.
?
In my Spanish Zoom class, by the very nature of its subject, we are invited to give a small story in Spanish of course, with English translation.? Sometimes we email the story earlier to the Presenter, at other times we “Share Screen” our document via Zoom.? Either way, our document appears on screen – just like your Power Point presentation – and the student reads his/her story as others read it.? The teacher then goes over certain words and students may add a comment or two.? Also, our Teacher puts up a story in SPANISH we have been reading for quite a while now, and we each, in turn as requested by the Teacher, read a tiny portion in Spanish, followed by our own interruption of it off the cuff.? It is very inter-active.
?
As well as that, usually a couple of minutes before the lesson starts, students start small conversations, quite naturally, with others responding, about something, anything, that has just happened, e.g. have you had an injection yet?? Very little time is spent on that, but it has created a closer, and caring friendship between us, as well as we learn more Spanish!
?
Conversely, in my larger evening Zoom sessions, after the Presenter – usually not the Convenor – has given their Story, participants are invited to ask questions or elaborate on what they have heard.? This period can last from 5 minutes to even up to 20 minutes – and a lot of information is exchanged.?
?
If there is difficulty trying to find a time to Squeeze ourself in without being rude, there are a couple of buttons at the very bottom of our Zoom screens that allow either a text message (called a Chat) to be sent to Presenter, or All, or one person, – also another button immediately to the right of that one (still in the middle of the bottom tab) that allows you to add a Yellow put up your hand Signal, which then shows about your face, or picture, and remains until your remove it.
?
I know Zoom can be difficult for all of us, but as we try it and explore a bit further from our comfort zones in it, it certainly is rewarding and honestly, not that much different at all from being in real life.? Except, we all have to accept that like camera shots, it never shows us as our real selves, and sometimes not very flattering.? Accept that – we’ll all the same, a bit tatty at times on the outside, but very good on the inside.? Be a bit adventurous, I say, and enjoy what we have been given.

Kind regards to all – hoping I haven’t offended anyone.

U3A Course R09 (Bible) Term 1 Session 10 Notes are posted #2timothy

G'day all,

Thanks for your encouragement during this now completed U3A term.??All course notes are now posted as PDFs.?

The three books examined in Term 1 - Lamentations, 1 Timothy, and 2 Timothy - each blessed me tremendously.??

In Term 2, which begins for R09 at 10:45 am on Thursday, 22 April, we'll study Paul's Epistle to the Romans, the longest and most systematically reasoned of his letters.? Written 8-10 years before 2 Timothy, Paul announces the letter's theme in Romans 1:16-17:?

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 'The just shall live by faith.' ”

Evangelist Ray Stedman called Romans the master key to Scripture because it tells how God can save the whole person: body, soul, and spirit.? Het notes that this isn't accomplished by how rich you are, how much you know, or any skills or capabilities that you have; but solely through a personal relationship with Jesus.

About 500 BC, Socrates wrote to Plato that, "It may be that the Deity can forgive sins, but I do not see how."? Well, he didn't have the book of Romans, but we do!? This is a book that turned the ancient world upside down, and many individuals consider Romans to be the most important and rewarding book in the Bible.

Zoom details will be provided before our first session.??

In the meantime, please consider signing up for the course on the U3A website?https://www.u3abrisbane.org.au?so that U3A Admin is aware of the interest in R09.? Thanks.

Thanks again.

Blessings,

Ray

U3A Course R09 (Bible) 2 Timothy ready to go live in 60 min #2timothy

G'day all,

Our final session for Term 1 - 2021 will start at 10:45 am.? Following on from our study of Paul's First Epistle to Timothy written at the end of his first imprisonment in Rome under house arrest, several years later Paul has been re-arrested and now is in chains awaiting execution, and Second Timothy is his last known letter.??

We'll briefly examine the cells where Paul was held, which were located a short distance from the Law Courts. Interestingly, imprisonment?was not a sentence under?Roman statutory law, although it permitted detention as in Paul's house arrest, debt bondage, and hard labour in?mills, mines, quarries, or work camps.? Incarceration?(publica custodia)?was intended to be a temporary measure prior to trial or execution.? In general, long-term incarceration was more widely practiced in the later Empire, and from the 4th century, under Christian rule.???

We'll also briefly examine some relatively recent evidence of Paul's final resting place.

Hope to see you soon.

Blessings,

Ray
