Re: : U3A Zoom Course R09, Course notes are now posted
Hi Linda, Thanks for your notice.? Wish you all the best.? Enjoy your stay on acreage. I should have a good idea tomorrow whether we'll finish John by the end of this term or not.? If we need an extra session or two and it isn't convenient for y'all to add a session or two to this term, we might just hold any additional sessions over to Term 4. Blessings, Ray

: U3A Zoom Course R09, Courts notes are now posted
G'day all, The course notes for John Chapters 9-11 are now posted at? Thanks for your indulgence with my rough start for today's course.? Since our class finished, I have spent about four hours online with Technical Support in Singapore going through my computer.? There were no viruses or anything like that, but there was one pesky Microsoft computer hibernation program that has a tendency to keep expanding to fill the space available.? The problem I was experiencing was that it had pretty much filled my C-drive so Zoom didn't have enough space to let me in as a tutor.? It's all better now and I have turned off the application that used that program and took up over 16 GB of memory (and growing).? So hopefully the problem is now settled and I won't need to buy yet another computer.? That's a relief. Term 4 enrolment will start soon for our continuing Zoom class.? Hopefully, we'll finish John before then.? It may require a session or two during the break.? How would you feel about that? As always, your questions, comments, complaints, and/or recommendations for next term will be gratefully received. U3A R09 Query on the Parables of Jesus in Luke 16
On Friday, 27 August 2021, 06:13:52 pm AEST, ianmurray <imurray8@...> wrote: Hello Ray, Prodigal son Ever since hearing about the parable of the prodigal son as a child I have felt sorry for the good son although I can understand? the message that this parable is sending. Wealthy man and agent I find the message in this parable very difficult to determine. The wealthy man admires the cunning of his dishonest agent but is still badly treated by him and losing money. What is your understanding of the message that this parable is sending? Blessings, Ian ---------------------------- Hi
Ian,
The parables in Luke 15 and 16 should be taken as a single message about how God?loves lost sinners and his love restores us to a right relationship with God. Heaven is filled with lost sinners who have come home.?God waits patiently, with loving compassion to restore?our full relationship?when we return to him with humble hearts. He freely offers us everything in the Kingdom of God without?dwelling on our past waywardness. The
prodigal son (or really, the prodigal father with two lost sons) follows the parables of the Lost Sheep (more rejoicing in heaven over a single sinner saved than 99 citizens who never put a foot wrong) and the Lost Coin (God's angels celebrate every time even just one sinner repents). Jesus
used these three parables to demonstrate what it means to be lost, how heaven
celebrates with joy when the lost are found, and how the loving Father longs to
save people. Because the younger son was as good as dead, his return was a time
for rejoicing but the jealous elder son who still held the remaining 2/3 of the
father’s estate begrudged losing even one fatted calf,? Bitterness and resentment kept the older son from forgiving his younger brother. He was lost in his own sins which blinded him to the treasure that he had and had freely enjoyed through his constant relationship with their father. This brings
us to the Parable of the Unjust Steward, which is based on the admonition in Deuteronomy
8:11-18 that everything comes from God and we should be thankful for all that we have and use it as He
directs. Jesus wasn’t teaching us to be dishonest, but rather that we should shrewdly
use our present worldly wealth and opportunities for future spiritual benefit. People
can see worldly wealth in three ways:
So how can wealth be used to serve God?
The story of the rich man and Lazarus flows naturally from these four parables. After physical death, it's too late to repent. Don't put off until tomorrow, etc.? Fleetwood Mac was halfway correct when they sang, "Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone," but they certainly missed the mark theologically on "[tomorrow] it'll be better than today." U3A Zoom Course R09; Question on Hebrew Gematria (Numerology)
Hi Merlene, Thanks for your interesting observations. Perhaps you'd like some more things to ponder.? What you'll see from these brief descriptions of the Hebrew meanings of numbers is how each number in Scripture is perfectly fit for purpose. All numbers in Scripture are significant, some more so than others.? On one level, the Law of Moses specified certain ages for specific purposes.? For example, no one could work in the tabernacle until age 30, except Kohenim (Levites) who could start a five-year training period at age 25 (Numbers 4:35; 8:24).? Jesus’ ministry therefore started per the Mosaic age requirement. Three is the Hebrew gematria number of divine and heavenly perfection (e.g., Trinity). Fittingly, Jesus’ ministry during His First Coming was three years long. Twelve is the?product?of 3 and 4 (the earthly, the number of what is material and organic). It is a mathematically perfect number that signifies?governmental perfection. It is found as a multiple in all gematria numbers that have to do with?“rule”.? Rabbinic literature regarded it as the threshold of adulthood. For many boys and girls, this was the age that their formal religious instruction ended. For some, this was the age where one began formal apprenticeship under a Rabbi. Interestingly, this was the age where Jesus demonstrated in the Temple the completeness of His learning. Ten is the number of ordinal perfection. Twenty is one short of twenty-one; if 21 is 3x7 (the Divine times spiritual perfection), then?twenty signifies “one short”, or expectancy: the Bible has many examples of people waiting 20 years. Age 20 marked the transition to adulthood in the biblical period. This meant different things for boys and girls. Whereas the obligations taken on by a young man at?bar mitzvah?were public and visible, a young woman’s obligations were more private.? This was the age that the taxation began for both men and women (Exodus 30:14, and conscription began for men (Numbers 1:3, 24).? Thirty (three times ten) denotes in a higher degree the perfection of Divine Order and marks the moment Christ commenced His ministry. Blessings, Ray
