So what size is a 6k collet and will it work in my spendle. I don't know if 6k is close to mt3 or will it mess something up |
Thanks for info I couldn't find it. I knew someone on here would point me in the right direction. Thanks again. Was a pretty decent buy 100.00 for 10 pcs. 1/16 to 5/8. I didn't think it would be a bad buy. I seen them on FB. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1559988321495782/?mibextid=dXMIcH

开云体育??? ??? These folks have lots of collets , do ya have the collet tube & sleeve for yer lathe ? these folks sell a kit , though it only has 7 collets animal

开云体育??? ??? Hit send too fast . If ya have the sleeve & the tube ya can get aset of 3C's from All Industrial tool , I have a set my kids got me a ways back & they seem to work just fine but ya need a sleeve to go from teh MT to the 3C & the tube to hold them in , There is also another part a threaded spindle protector that ya don't gotta have , but with it ya don't have to shove a knocker in the spindle to knock the collet out . Harold Hall has a book wher ehe show's how to make square collets , that fit in the 3C's or other ones . I'll see if I can find the link . animal On 1/8/24 9:28 PM, Mike Allen wrote:

开云体育??? ??? Get teh model # of yer lathe & then go through the files section here & find the manual there , that will tell ya what the taper of yer spindle & tailstock is . Start by finding that info . animal On 1/8/24 9:35 PM, Billself wrote:
I don't have anything yet. Can't figure out what fits my lathe. I think it's a 3mt but what does that mean and what do I gotta have to put a collet in the spendle I'm assuming a nut but don't know what else? |
I don't have any numbers on my lathe but I have seen a couple like mine without the 8ft bed? they were made in late 30s til mid 40s something like a 1017204 or something like that. So that's all I can find out about it. I've just been going with a craftsman atlas 12" metal lathe I thought all the spindle bores were the same??

This might help you answer your question:? I've only been collecting collet info for a dozen years or so, don't seem to have anything myself that mentions 6K collets, so no specs on them.? One thing you could do, figure out which thread the spindle on your lathe is, should be 1-1/2"-8tpi, and get a backplate and ER-32 collet chuck for it.? I bought one similar to this:??but with the 100mm flange, and put it on a 4" 1-1/2"-8tpi backplate for my TH42. If you're not a cheap bastrich like me, you could also buy this setup:? ? And you should look on both ebay and Amazon.com, as well as Victor Tool, CBCO Tool, and Shars. Better quality will cost you more, but if you know your way around your lathe, you can make as good or better yourself.? If you have the 10" or 12" Atlas or Craftsman lathe, they should be MT3 with the 1-1/2"-8tpi spindle thread, if it's a 6" I believe they're MT2 & 1"-8 (or maybe 1"-10) spindles.? Good luck, and have fun! Bill in OKC William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.? SEMPER GUMBY! 开云体育You can make a temporary collet to hold a mill in a 3 or 4 jaw chuck to get your job done. Use aluminum. Very simple process. On 1/9/2024 12:39 AM, Billself wrote:
Thank you. I need a ways to hold bits so I can cut a keyway in a shaft.i don't own a mill yet so I've had to do it in drill press. Does work the best and it's really slow also you can see bit slipping once in a while. So wanna try the lathe method? |
开云体育Or make an ER collet chuck for the spindle.? I’ve made 2 for different series collets ER-20 and ER-32.? Bought the nuts, made the bodies.? Plans are in the Files section, adjust for the collet series. ? Greg |
I've got a functional chuck that I "built" from one made for the 7x mini-lathes. Still needs a bit of tweaking, as I got it to within .001", but not better. I also have the MT3 to ER-32 collet holder that I first bought, also for that 7x ML. It works nicely, but you can't pass longer stock through it. I have to practice cutting metric threads on my Atlas before I'm sure I can make my own, but I've got a couple of ER-32 nuts, as well. ;) Since I bought that, I've filled in the set of collets that came with the MT3 shanked collet holder, and bought another for MT2. Also MT2 & MT3 collets, and ER-25, and a some ER-11... You could say it's getting out of hand, and I'd not really be able to argue with you about it. :) Collet holders can come in handy, but a good 4-jaw chuck will do most everything they can do, just slower. I've been collecting stuff for MT3/MT2 lathes since 2008... I've also picked up stuff either in sets or individually, as and when they came available AND I had some spare money. There are a lot of paths to having a well-equipped lathe, and if you're a good machinist already, you can make much of the stuff yourself. I wasn't nearly that good when I started collecting. I have done some things to help me though. I have a stub arbor that matches the spindle threads on my TH42, which makes it easier to make stuff for the lathe. I don't have to pull the chuck off the lathe to test fit something I make for the lathe spindle. I need to get my lathe set up properly again. Which means I need to seal an MDF benchtop I laminated, and get it drilled and sealed again, then get the lathe and stuff all put together. And I can only dream of an 8' bed... Bill in OKC William R.
