Bench master?
I know it's not Atlas or Craftsman but I just got gifted a Bench Master horizontal mill and was wondering if anyone knew what happened to the old yahoo Bench Master group? Looking for parts/lists, manuals..... Thanks for any info??

Check out Vintage Machinery.org.
I know there's at least a few guys on OWWM that have them as well.
Good luck.

开云体育There used to be a Benchmaster group?benchmastermill@.... Haven’t seen any traffic in quite a long time.I used to correspond regularly. Jim Irwin

Thanks for the replies, had a few distractions so just getting back. Yahoo group is no longer, other did not show up with searches.
The thing was a wreck when acquired, had an unusable Frankenstein vertical head but luckily the PO used the old horizontal spindle and i was able to recover it. Cleaned all the bearings all spec'ed out so regressed it and put back together. Had to completely remake the table lead screw as the old one was hacked together with 1/2"-13 all thread. Had some 1/2-10 acme screw and nuts that worked out fine. Had to make an aluminum block for the end cap which I drilled and bored on my 6" Craftsman lathe and also turned and threaded the ends. The over arm and table cleaned up nice. Temp'ed upa sewing machine motor for a test run and this thing cuts true and clean. Squared up 3 sides of some old angle iron, step groved in a 1/2" end mill and skinned a fly cutter across it and it perform well for what little I have in it so far. Now I need to find a horizontal cutter holder for some gear cutters, not much out there that has an MT2 for the spindle. That Atlas MF horizontal mills use an MT2 spindle taper, too. I have on that's been nearly together for probably close to 15 years now. Bought some MT2 accessories for it, import stuff from Amazon & eBay. ER25 collet holder & collet, MT2 collets, and MT2 blank mandrels, among other things. Might be better to have a bit larger lathe, like my Atlas TH42, but any lathe would be better than no lathe, and it sounds like you've done good work with your Craftsman 6". Didn't see any attached photos, and would be interested in them. Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. ? It looks like that mill is crying for a Bridgeport style head? to go with the horizontal, now that you can find heads reasonable. This is my lime driven Oakley with a Millport 4 Hp head. Just hung the head where I wanted it and welded an adapter in place. Got the head off Craigs list?for a couple hundred n about that much more for new bearings?and belts.? Though I do like the horizontal for many reasons I would like to re store the ability to quick change over to a vertical as well. The original stock version of the Bench Master had set ups for both.
I am already sourcing parts to do so, I'll keep an eye out for a head, thanks! -- Ken H in AZ Knowledge is like manure, it won't do any good unless you spread it around. |
开云体育Clamped to the over arm is common on the type mill you have. The easily available Bridgeport? heads mount to a 1 3/16" ifirc pin with a gear to adjust tram and the bracket clamps to tram adapter. My Oakley originally had a vertical head with shaper that held the over arm but the junkie next door stole it out of my barn so I made my adapter bolt to the bosses that were there and I omitted the? tram gear and lock the quill down and use the bed to adjust the tram. Be dam sure the quill is touching the bed and locked before UN-clamping if you omit the gear. Dave On 6/1/2024 4:05 PM, Ken H wrote:
Dave, also what is the common head attachment, does it clamp on the over arm and if so what is the diameter? Or if not what spec's to attach? |
I like the collet holder. Is that homemade? On Sun, Jun 2, 2024 at 3:19?PM William Nelson via <wnnelson=[email protected]> wrote: Here's my Benchmaster with a Rotex vertical head. I did convert the y collet spindle to a ER20 spindle. |
