I tried to buy the 3990 today.? This was through a real
estate agent that was trying to get a property ready to sell.?
Owner was an older woman that didn't know anything about the
tools and her husband was an invalid.? Real estate agent asked
me if the thing next to the lathe was part of the lathe - it
was a hydraulic press.??
Deal was $1000 and I got to pick up lathe bits that I could
find.? We got over there and there was a bucket on the lathe
that had a steady rest and a few tool holders in two sizes.? I
spun the spindle by hand to check that everything was moving
and turned on the motor.? Tensioned the belts and the spindle
started spinning.? Then I hit the feed.? Nothing moved so I
went looking for what I had set incorrectly.? Then I noticed
that there was no leadscrew.? Looked back at the gear box and
saw lots of bad weld blobs.? Lead screw had been cut off at
the gear box.? It looked like he was set up to make a specific
plastic part.? He had bins of older computer chips so it may
have been some small time manufacturing.? He also had a tool
post grinder box with no grinder in it.
There was also another shed with another lathe - small
Sears after they stopped selling Atlas as Craftsman.? That one
had the Dumore tool post grinder mounted on it.? Also a few
measuring tools.
I gave the real estate agent some suggestions and we came
home.? 7 gallons og gas and a $28 UHaul rental.
If anyone is interested in the lathe or tool post grinder I
can put you in touch with the agent.? It is located in Hamburg
NY (near Buffalo).
Picture of the welding on the gearbox.?
