paper#2 - alternative to the Guggenheim Museum assignment in case you haven't already gone....
Students, This is an alternative paper assignment for those of you who have not yet visited the Guggenheim Museum. If you have seen the “Countryside” show at the Guggenheim, great. We look forward to reading your submissions. If you have not yet gone, kindly complete the assignment described below instead. The Guggenheim is closed for the foreseeable future on account of the Corona situation. Here are the instructions: Write an essay in which you compare and contrast Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler’s Guaranty Building (1896) with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building (1958). Why can each of these buildings be classified as “modern”? What makes them modern? How does the Guaranty Building exemplify the principles outlined in “The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered"? What are the forces, social, economic, and political, which drove the emergence of the tall office building? How does Mies’ building break with the precedent established by Sullivan? In contextualizing your comparisons, please be sure to analyze each building in terms of the analytical criteria offered in Leland Roth’s Understanding Architecture or Frampton’s Genealogy of Modern Architecture. Your essays should be 3 (three) double-spaced pages in length and will be due on Thursday, March 26. Be sure to footnote your sources where applicable. Please also include plans and photographs where appropriate. Your individual section leaders will provide you with guidelines for submitting papers in the coming days. Have a restful break. Please do reach out to your section leader if you have questions. Many thanks. -Prof. V.
