Here are the instructions:
?
Write an essay in which you compare and contrast Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler’s Guaranty Building (1896) with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building (1958). ??Why can each of these buildings be classified as “modern”? What makes them modern? How does the Guaranty Building exemplify the principles outlined in “The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered"? What are the forces, social, economic, and political, which drove the emergence of the tall office building? How does Mies’ building break with the precedent established by Sullivan?
?
In contextualizing your comparisons, please be sure to analyze each building in terms of the analytical criteria offered in Leland Roth’s?Understanding Architecture?or Frampton’s?Genealogy of Modern Architecture. Your essays should be 3 (three) double-spaced pages in length and will be due on Thursday, March 26. Be sure to footnote your sources where applicable. Please also include plans and photographs where appropriate.
