¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi, Mike, Warplanner games usually are played non-interactively.? Player A moves their ships and transports for sea supply, saves the file on the Web, thereby making it available for the other players to look at.? Player B responds to the fleet movements, sending out naval interceptors and making interception rolls.? He sends those results to the other players.? Player A makes his counter-response in a new incremental file, etc., Over the course of the game each incremental file and each dice roll is saved on the Warplanner server, building a game? record. You also can create private planning files.? For instance, let's say its Summer '41, time for Barbarossa!? Before they create the first "for record" part of the turn, the German and Italian players run through a series of private-to-them scenarios, saving each scenario as a planning file that only they can see. And there are some nice automations, naturally. On 6/30/2023 6:44 AM, Mike Stoddart

Thanks Todd. I¡¯m not sure when I¡¯ll get to the rules. Busy family man and all that. I do have a WarPlanner account but I haven¡¯t used it yet. To be an observer, would I need to sit and watch a game for an hour or two or pop in from time to time to see what¡¯s happened? I¡¯m up in Ottawa, Canada. |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi, Mike, The 3 of us who initially created the BoA rules have been successful in mentoring new-to-A3R players in how to use them.? If you do decide that you want to give BoA a shot, drop me a note at tdunnavant@... and we'll bring you in as an observer to one of our games.? The four of us (original 3 plus no-longer-a-mentee) currently are into the Fall '44 season, so we should be starting a new game in the next few weeks or so. We do play with the Warplanner app.? It's a great way to bring
remote players together.? The four of us live in San Antonio
Texas, Houston Texas, Baltimore Maryland area, and Italy! On 6/29/2023 8:51 PM, Mike Stoddart

Thanks guys. I'm playing a physical copy solo, so no face to face. I'll definitely take a look at the BoA rules at some point. Thanks! |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi, Mike, Welcome to the group!? I'm your friendly moderator ;-) Here is a leadoff question to you -- do you play the game FtF, or do you use an online tool such as Warplanner? In my humble opinion, the best option for playing A3R with
research is to play the game using the Best of AWAW (BoA)
rules package that some of us have put together and use.? You can
find an older release of the BoA rules package in the Files
section of this group.? Give me an hour or so, and I'll update
what is there with the current release of these rules. A3R was first shipped around 1992.? A lot of experience regarding
game mechanics and such was gained during the next 11 or so years,
culminating in the release of A World at War (AWAW) in 2003.? The
AWAW rules themselves have continued to evolve.? AWAW is quite complex!? Our merry band of players has worked to extract the rules from AWAW that (in our opinion) correct the more "gamey" aspects of A3R and which otherwise improve A3R mechanics.? We've avoided AWAW changes that don't fit well within the base A3R game flow.? For example, we've largely stayed with the A3R/ERS research rules model, we've avoided the AWAW naval model, and we've avoided the AWAW oil model. If you want to learn more about A3R enhanced with the BoA rules,
feel free to drop me a line at tdunnavant@....? And, like
I wrote earlier, give me about an hour and I'll update this
group's Files section to include the current BoA rules package. On 6/28/2023 5:57 PM, Mike Stoddart

I've had A3R (EotRS) for a while but have yet to play it. I'm currently stumbling my way through Gathering Storm, and one aspect that I'm enjoying is the research. I downloaded the research rules document from this group. I hope to play A3R in the future, so can I use the research rules from here with the original rulebook? Should I use the original research rules from EotRS? I also found a rules rewrite on BGG. Which is the best option for playing A3R with research? Thanks |
Re: #a3r Advanced Third Reich and research?

I suggest playing with the Research Rules from EotRS. But I'd say to not use Variants when using Research. I've yet to play EotRS with an opponent since I bought it way back in the 90s. Someday I hope to play both combined with a human.?
I haven't seen the Rules Rewrite yet so I'll have to check those out.? |

Hello?
I would like to introduce myself.? ?My name is Rikk and I have been a gamer for a number of years I started playing a3r years ago and moved on to AWaW when it came out and played that face to face for years. Unfortunately that wonderful gaming streak came to an end. I have since found a person I play the original 1977 ?? Third Reich with but I am trying to get back into A3R / Rising Sun? and found this through Google. If anyone would like to play a game either face to face I am in Phoenix, Arizona? ?or on Warplanner please let me know. I would definitely need a practice game to get back into the swing of things and probably learn to play with the rule set you have developed at this group. I am familiar with discord, Ventrilo, Warplanner etc.. for any online gaming or face to face. Anyways thanks and I hope to be playing in the near future. I can be contacted at orgyockbo@... |
VASSAL module
#ers
I just wanted to let everyone know I added a new module to VASSAL for Empire of the Rising Sun.? I am too busy right now for a campaign game but if someone wants to play one of the scenarios, then please let me know.? If anyone has feedback on the module then please also let me know.? I have designed the module for hidden task forces and combat groups for each side.? This means that if you want to play solo, you have to retire from one side to join the other side.? Please read the module description on VASSAL to understand how everything works.
