I was an inmate of TechBrewery in 2009-2010 and all thru the pandemic. Sorry to see it go. Amanda was generous enough to work with me to offer former Tech Brewery members a 2 month complimentary free trial of Bamboo Ann Arbor (including any coworking, desk or private office space) if they mentioned the Tech Brewery during their initial tour. [ARROW-General-List] AMPTeam & Foxhunt August 19th
The ARROW radio group usually meets in a park monthly (rain, shine, snow, or otherwise) to gather and to field test radio transmissions and reception for the ARROW Monday night net. Usually the instructions are very clear as to where to meet, but this month is a bit different (see below) and an exercise in your VHF direction finding skills. Lunch non-summary for Wednesday 8/14/2024 11:45am at Shalimar on Main St
Six of us had lunch at Shalimar on Main Street. The all-you-can-eat buffet for 6 came to $120 and change, or $20 each, if you're keeping track of downtown lunch prices. It included a service charge. Next week looks like Evergreen downtown; it's student move-in, but hopefully downtown will still be navigable. A few things that came up in the discussion: Peter Honeyman and I are planning a field trip to a machine in a North Campus data center to look at citi.umich.edu and especially to sort out the power supply situation there on a server. http://citi.umich.edu/ Ed Weiss has built sound walls, a room-size instrument with capacitive touch sensors and MIDI output. Some of his lighting apparatus is at Steve Pierce's YPSi performance space. Roy Richter and I are looking for an additional person who is willing to organize lunch, which mostly involves 1) showing up on Wednesday 2) thinking about and deciding where lunch will be the following week 3) notifying this list about the decision and maybe sometimes occasionally 4) writing a non-summary of what happened. Dan Friedus talked about an auction for a physical object (a physical coin) that included a virtual currency (a Bitcoin) in its minting. I think - and Dan can update this - that it's this auction house. https://stacksbowers.com/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-btc/ Spencer Thomas worked at the University of Utah before coming to Ann Arbor. (His name can be found in the credits for the Utah Raster Toolkit and the RLE file format.) https://www2.cs.utah.edu/gdc/projects/urt/index.html https://github.com/sarnold/urt/ The question was about Alpena, and some recommendations there included the Maritime Museum, the Besser Museum (industrial and local history), Noise and Toys (used music and used toy store), and as Peter put it "comparing the Walmart and the Meijer which are across the street from each other". There is also Dinosaur Gardens in Ossineke. https://www.visitalpena.com/ -- Edward Vielmetti +1 734 330 2465 edward.vielmetti@...

Advice on possibly shady job offer 3
Hi Everyone, My son is searching for a programming job, and has been offered a position (Android Developer) with a company called TechConsulting https://www.techconsulting.net/. The contract he was offered was from Techfield, which appears to be the parent company https://www.techfield.com/contact-page/ There are a few red flags, which is why he is hesitating. Training is 8 weeks onsite in Atlanta, where they will pay $10/hour. After that you interview with their clients to place in a job (they also offer coaching for the interviews). Once placed, pay is $34/hour (but location isn't stated, don't know if they adjust for cost of living). Does anyone know about this company, or these types of offers? He has looked for reviews online, and found a few sketchy stories, but there really isn't much out there. Any leads on SE Michigan firms looking for programmers? He has his eye on the local campus job boards as well. I can forward resume if that is helpful. Thanks for any and all thoughts on this! Julie

Update on Ann Arbor LED streetlights
Last night, the Ann Arbor City Council voted to install the brighter 58W streetlights throughout the city. One mitigating factor that only emerged at the 11th hour is that they can actually be implemented as 48W lights, which is what was verbally agreed upon. Council Member Briggs offered an amendment to enforce the 48W implementation, but the City Administrator said it was not necessary. This will now require holding their feet to the fire. A HUGE thank-you to everyone who helped fight for the right thing. Although we didn't fully succeed, you were heard, and you made waves, and we made some significant gains. Special thanks to Jim Sheerin, Rita Turmer-Sheerin, Leslie Mason, and Heidi Trudell for drumming up public support, and to John Mirsky, Rita Mitchell, and Steve Brown for continued work with the city commissions and elsewhere. Huge thanks to everyone who spoke at the Council meetings and wrote emails to Council. What became clear at last night's meeting is that the city staff had no interest in looking at other options, and effectively stonewalled Council's requests to explore alternatives. In response to the original charge from the July 15 meeting to explore options with DTE, the formal response was a Staff Memo that provided false reasoning* to stick with the original plan. In response to additional Council questions that were read out at last night's meeting, staff provided no substantive answers. In particular, they failed to provide any details for why they claim 1.5 FTE are needed to maintain the 2-fixture solution (i.e., how many people does it take to screw in 2 light bulbs), and they claimed that the amount of money saved by that solution was "nominal" according to a vague statement by DTE in 2023. This is unlikely to be true, since the wattage saved by the 2-fixture solution is about 33% more, and DTEs rates are set by the Michigan Public Services Commission. The money saved is probably substantial, and must be the driving reason why DTE has fought tooth and nail, through our City Staff, to prevent the 2-fixture solution. In response to the final question, staff stated that they believed the 29W lights were too dim to be appropriate -- a baseless statement that directly contradicts the ANSI standards, which they avoided mentioning. Why would our city staff believe that? despite the large amount of information that our group and others have provided? Because, as they stated during the meeting, they've had "near daily" meetings with DTE. The lack of staff responsiveness to Council's charge and requests for information prevented Council from their stated intention to explore alternatives -- on behalf of what you, the taxpayers, had loudly requested, and which was based on solid science. To end on a positive note, the new LEDs, if implemented at 48W, will be only 200 - 300% brighter than ANSI standards in residential neighborhoods, and they'll be a good color temperature of 2700 K and shielded. Lighting along arteries should be generally dark-sky compliant. We can thank staff for obtaining these partial wins. We especially owe a huge thanks to Council Members Erica Briggs (Ward 5) and Dharma Akmon (Ward 4). Both of them fully engaged with this issue at a technical level, and did a great deal of work behind the scenes to try to shift course. Had staff worked with them in good faith, Council might have had a viable alternative to consider. Please consider sending them a note (EBriggs@..., DAkmon@...). Thanks again to all. action requested on Ann Arbor City Council review of streetlights 2
This came from Michigan Dark Skies. If you are concerned about addressing light pollution in Ann Arbor, you might take some of the proposed actions. Jennifer This Thursday, August 8 at 7pm, Ann Arbor City Council will again review the LED streetlight conversion project. Thanks to your feedback, they postponed the approval and asked staff to renegotiate with DTE. The materials were posted today, and show that their efforts were unsuccessful. Instead, DTE persuaded them that 58W LEDs are just as bright as the existing 100W high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights. This is false and misleading. The Staff Memo states: the lumen output with shielding (5,843 lumens) is the more relevant value for comparison. This lumen output represents a 22% reduction from the 100W HPS baseline This statement is false*. Moreover, we have field data that demonstrates that 58W LEDs are much brighter than existing 100W HPS lights in Ann Arbor, and that the LEDs are 300-400% brighter than the IES/ANSI national recommended standards in residential neighborhoods. DTE is manipulating the narrative to focus on lumens, whereas the IES/ANSI standards are based on the brightness received on the ground, i.e., footcandles (or lux). The discussion needs to refocus on getting Ann Arbor compliant with the ANSI standards. These standards are carefully developed by the lighting industry to consider all uses, including pedestrians, bicycles, cars, etc. We have 2 Action requests: - Before the meeting this Thursday night: we need people to email the City Council to again protest the existing plan. Nothing has changed, except that DTE is misrepresenting the data: CityCouncil@... If you know your Council reps, please also contact them individually -- their contact info is HERE. - This Thursday, August 8, 7pm: Is anyone interested in speaking up at the public comment session at the start of the meeting? You can do so by zoom or phone or in-person. You must call 734-794-6140 sign up in advance on the day of the meeting. The item is DC-1 on the Agenda, but you don't have to stay for the Council discussion. The files are HERE. Instructions and call-in numbers are on the Agenda. You can also ask for the direct Zoom link. Please let City Council know that you are watching and that you still care about this. The City should focus on enabling an alternative plan. Please express concern that nothing has changed since July 15 and feel free to reuse any of the information below in your email to Council. Many thanks -- let's do it again! Sally Oey (she/her; pronounce) University of Michigan, Department of Astronomy 323 West Hall, 1085 S. University Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1107phone: +1-734-936-7885, fax: +1-734-763-6317 http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/~msoey https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/darkskies *The 5843 lumen value is the visible light output, whereas the value used for the HPS baseline (7486 lumens) is the total light output that includes non-visible light (IR and UV). The comparison is apples to oranges: would you read a book by the light of your 1000-W toaster oven? It outputs a LOT more lumens than your light bulb. Standard HPS to LED conversion apps confirm that a standard 100W HPS light should be replaced by a 30-ish W LED. Also, shielding does not change the lumen output, confirming that one can't compare values across columns in the staff memo table. Jennifer Dye 734-709-8502 http://www.linkedin.com/in/DyeJennifer
