Six of us had lunch at Shalimar on Main Street. The
all-you-can-eat buffet for 6 came to $120 and change, or $20 each,
if you're keeping track of downtown lunch prices. It
included a service charge.
Next week looks like Evergreen downtown; it's
student move-in, but hopefully downtown will still
be navigable.
A few things that came up in the discussion:
Peter Honeyman and I are planning a field trip to a machine
in a North Campus data center to look at citi.umich.edu and
especially to sort out the power supply situation there on a server.
Ed Weiss has built sound walls, a room-size instrument with
capacitive touch sensors and MIDI output. Some of his lighting
apparatus is at Steve Pierce's YPSi performance space.
Roy Richter and I are looking for an additional person who is
willing to organize lunch, which mostly involves 1) showing up
on Wednesday 2) thinking about and deciding where lunch
will be the following week 3) notifying this list about the decision
and maybe sometimes occasionally 4) writing a non-summary of
what happened.
Dan Friedus talked about an auction for a physical
object (a physical coin) that included a virtual currency (a Bitcoin)
in its minting. I think - and Dan can update this - that it's
this auction house.
Spencer Thomas worked at the University of Utah before
coming to Ann Arbor. (His name can be found in the credits
for the Utah Raster Toolkit and the RLE file format.)
The question was about Alpena, and some recommendations
there included the Maritime Museum, the Besser Museum (industrial
and local history), Noise and Toys (used music and used toy store),
and as Peter put it "comparing the Walmart and the Meijer which
are across the street from each other". There is also Dinosaur Gardens
in Ossineke.
