Re: a2b3 #4: Seoul Korner report

Hi!- Yes, I try to comment on AU and AAiO when there's a relevant discussion.

We've actually just gone live with that local hosting program. Here's a short blurb: The Community High Web Outreach Team has launched a ArborSpeech (), a new service for Ann Arbor-based organizations. We're offering to build and host websites for free to help groups that wouldn't otherwise have this resource. ArborSpeech is powered by easy-to-learn & use software -- and someone from the web team will be available for training and support. With any luck I'll be able to stop in at the next a2b3 lunch to talk more about this and some other web projects. Matt Hampel On 9/12/05, Richard Murphy <murphyr@...> wrote:

a2b3 #4: Seoul Korner report
Lunch report -
Ted Hanss (ted@...), Jose Nazario (jose@...), Alan Guiterrez (alan@...) and Matt Hampel (mahatm@...) were there for the whole lunch, and Patricia Anderson (pfa@...) stopped in briefly. Noted - Vint Cerf is going to work at Google, and eBay is looking at buying Skype. There's a benefit for Katrina relief coming up at the Northfield Roadhouse, , . Funds go to the Red Cross and Patricia handed out posters. Matt is working to release Arborspeech, a Community High project to allow local communities a platform to build web sites and blogs & the like. It's not quite live yet but contact Matt if you want to give it a spin. It's running a blog/cms system called Textpattern that also powers the Community High School site. Alan got to talking about Katrina relief efforts he is doing at thinknola.com, esp. how a wiki page he set up was a part of the rallying point for the bus rescue of Xavier students, and how people are coordinating pet rescue right now there. Jose noted that people's email in the affected area is bouncing and wondered out loud how to build temporary mail hubs that would catch that mail before it bounced and perhaps have ways to redirect it to people at their temporary addresses or new permanent addresses. I though the dol sot bi bim bop was good, but my stomach reminded me later that it was a bit greasier than some of the other places we had visited. Thanks to everyone for showing up, I'll be sure to have a spot picked out for the next one - thinking that might be another off-campus place perhaps closer to North Campus this time. thanks Ed -- Edward Vielmetti in Ann Arbor, MI 48104 +1 734 276 5910 edward.vielmetti@... |

bi bim bop lunch thursdays, next one 9/8 at Seoul Korner
I'll be at Seoul Korner on Thursday (9/8) at noon,
hope you can join me for bi bim bop. Seoul Korner is at the corner of Thompson and William just west of State St. The nearest parking, if you need parking, is at the Maynard St. garage. There is also a University lot nearby though it will probably be full at noon. As always there is no particular agenda for any of these meetings, though I do expect from all of you that we'll get a fairly thorough restaurant review written by the time we're done. I'm not expecting anyone to wander up to us and offer to buy us lunch. At the moment, I'm working on a bunch of unfunded and volunteer projects and towards a good of landing at least one funded project for September. The most important volunteer effort has been , which is a collection of neighborhood resources for New Orleans neighborhoods. If you know anyone working on post-hurricane relief efforts who might like bi bim bop, please do invite them along (I'd relocate to a po-boy shop if I could for a week but really, is there any good New Orleans food in Ann Arbor or even anywhere nearby?) thanks Ed -- Edward Vielmetti in Ann Arbor, MI 48104 +1 734 276 5910 Think New Orleans: edward.vielmetti@... |
thanks for all for lunch
Next week back towards campus:
we'll be at Seoul Korner at William and Thompson. a quick summary around the table - We had an early visit from some sales reps from a financial services firm who offered to buy us lunch (about $10) for a 5-7 minute pitch. For an 8 person lunch that's about an $80 value. As much as I'd like to get sponsorship for the lunch series I'll bet we can get someone more on-topic. Attendees: Diane Durance, ddurance@... Jose Nazario, jose@... Ted Hanss, ted@... Edward Vielmetti, edward.vielmetti@... Charles Yun, tcyun@... Sam Shin, nycshim@... Erik Hofer, ehofer@... (am I missing anyone?) The food: Most of us had dol sot bi bim bop, where the dish is served in a hot stone bowl. Lunch bi bim bop was $6.95, dol sot $7.95. There is also sushi on the menu. We got a pretty good assortment of sides. The bi bim bop bowl was good but it was distinctly different from the campus standard - there were mushrooms in it, for instance, but no shredded cucumbers. Topics of discussion: Hurricane Katrina. Diane lived in the French Quarter for a couple of years. Lots of general discussion, it was on everyone's mind. Erik Hofer notes a School of Information project to coordinate Katrina housing. Gas prices are up to $3+ (I paid $3.19 yesterday). Diane and Jose carpooled. Asian groceries. Two Korean groceries, one Manna on Broadway near Plymouth, the other in the shopping center with the Wendy's off Plymouth. Ted Hanss noted a Chinese market on W. Liberty near Coleman's, in back of Faz Hello Pizza, mostly unmarked from the street. Mobile phones. Those who were comparing showed Treo 650 vs. Blackberry 7100. Airport parking. The parking concession at Metro is apparently re-running very old (February) charges that were not done in the first place. Watch out on your card statement if you see unusual charges. More Hurricane Katrina discussion. This doesn't capture it all, but we had a good time. -- Edward Vielmetti in Ann Arbor, MI 48104 +1 734 276 5910 edward.vielmetti@... |
Housing match project at SI
Erik Hofer
Some people at the School of Information are working on a project to
aggregate and coordinate housing offers and needs for those affected by the hurricane. Folks interested in participating should let me know and I'll get you in touch with the right people. Forwarded from Bob Frost: A new email list for people wanting to help in SI's Katrina-help efforts has been formed; it's joinable and the email address is si.katrina@.... There also a Wiki: . We'll soon have a Web site, katrinahousing.net. We're working on it now, volunteers welcome. |

I'm planning to drive from downtown to the lunch, and I'm bringing Ed with me. I can fit two more people in my somewhat small car. Jose, can you walk over to the IT Zone? Ed and I will be here. Anyone else? Diane -----Original Message-----

reminder of A^2 B^3 lunch Thursday 9/1 at Seoul Garden
A reminder that tomorrow, Thursday, is the
third Ann Arbor Bi Bim Bop tour lunch, this one at Seoul Garden. If anyone needs a ride from downtown or from campus please use the list to coordinate. I'll probably be coming from downtown myself and would be taking the 11:48 #6 Ellsworth bus leaving downtown and arriving a few minutes after noon if traffic goes well. From campus, you can take the 11:46 #36 Wolverine Tower bus from the stop at the UGLI. Get to the stop a few minutes early of course. I'm expecting and hoping some folks this week will come from Internet2, where I was at a very interesting workshop on "Bridging the Wizard Gap" on getting the most of high performance networks. I'll be sure to give a little trip report from that workshop at lunch. -- Edward Vielmetti in Ann Arbor, MI 48104 +1 734 276 5910 edward.vielmetti@... |

Jose Nazario, jose@... Ted Hanss, ted@... Sam Shim, nycshim@... Erik Hofer, ehofer@... Mike Whelan, mikewhelan@... Diane Durance, ddurance@... The one thing I took into the discussion (and that I hope to keep going based on some of the talking we did) are these three ideas, which are already floating around on the net in ways that are pretty easy to tap into. to wit: Community indicators. How can you tell that a community is active, energetic, and going well? What are the external indicators of those sorts of success measures - and they may be very distinct from financial profit and loss metrics - and how do you organize your efforts to improve on them? Follow some discussion at Neighborhood. Who are the people in your neighborhood? Do you know them, interact with them, share tools with them, recognize them on the street? What sorts of neighborhood institutions (like the ice cream shop with wifi) help build community? Attention. What are you paying attention to right now? Are you paying full attention, because nothing else is distracting you, or is this one of many things in your life that you don't quite have enough time for? Did your Blackberry just buzz and now your mind is off in California solving a problem there? There's the notion of a world we live in of "continuous partial attention" watching way too many things and not focusing on anything. htttp://del.icio.us/tag/attention so that's some ideas. as always I'm happy for anyone to bring any idea to these lunches, and to see who all shows up and what they might bring to the table. so welcome! hope to see you again. -- Edward Vielmetti in Ann Arbor, MI 48104 +1 734 276 5910 edward.vielmetti@... |
reminder of Thursday noonish Eastern Accents bi bim bop lunch today
Just a quick reminder, there will be a bi bim bop lunch event today at
Eastern Accents, #2 on our tour. Call me at 734-276-5910 if you find yourself in need of directions or anything. The best parking if you need it is the structure at Fourth and Washington, half a block from the restaurant. see you there! no particular agenda, though I will be expecting to talk about the idea of "community indicators", what sorts of things you look for in a place or online system that is a sign that people are actively providing energy to the place. thanks Ed |
Re: Google Map of the A^2 B^3 bi bim bop tour
You can put any hunk of HTML into mygmaps, so if you say, created a
wiki page for each restaurant, you could link to it from the gmap... Even better would be to "include" part of the wiki page in the popup. :) On 8/19/05, Edward Vielmetti <edward.vielmetti@...> wrote: I used "mygmaps" to create a really basic -- Scott Trudeau scott.trudeau AT gmail DOT com AIM: sodthestreets |
