Well, they're still listed in the 1972 catalog but I don't know how much
longer they were in the track line-up after that.

Expensive too. A whole 80 cents!

I know what you mean by each new piece too. Back then, every little thing
added to the layout was a major event! Especially track!

New switch (whether manual or electric) with a few pieces of track for a
new siding? Why, it was cause for a miniature golden spike ceremony!

Re: Ore Cars: A1G or not?

Thanks George.

Are the wheels on those black plastic or blackened metal?

If blackened metal, it's a bit unusual for that era but not unheard of. My
2397 Morrell reefer has black metal wheels.

If black plastic, that's what came in the kits too.

Ask and you shall receive... er, eventually. I have the photos uploaded to the A1G site but I haven't built the text page yet.

For members here only, here is a sneak preview (well, assuming this works).

From top to bottom: box with lid, box without lid, end of box with white class "Atlas" label.

"The Collector's Guide to N Scale" by the late Barry Wingard does call out this three pack with those particular ore cars (GN, Soo Line, LS&I). I don't know what happened to the Missabe ore car. I should have paid closer attention to whether the eBay seller from whom I bought my copy of the 2499 had them in any other configuration, that is with the Missabe ore car instead of one of the other three.

And by the way, the shade of brown on the GN in my three pack isn't the same as the one on the GN ore car I already owned, which was probably from a kit. Instant variation report... I guess if you call some 40 years from the date of release "instant." Well, it was new news to me!

Doug,
Thanks. Looks like Model Power will also release the Gantry Crane kit sometimes this spring.?? I found another unusual N scale? structure kit at an old hobby shop here in NE. ?It is?a Life-Like(made in Denmark) Metro Mini-Storage. Very cool kit. It looks a bit like the Atlas/Pola Factory-brewery.It could be used as a factory or other industry. Thanks again.
sincerely,

Thanks Randy,

Here is what they were and what they are now:

Atlas Model Power

Coal Mine Blue Coal Depot
Factory Lowenbrau Brewery
Log Mill Saw Mill
Freight Station Wayside Station
Lumber Mill Lumber Yard
Gravel Tower Stone and Gravel Depot

Also, the Model Power Malden Station is very close, if not identical to the
original Passenger Station not released back then but finally many years
later.

I see a couple of other structures on there too that used to be sold under
other brands back, long ago. The farmhouse with the fence around it, for
instance, used to be an AHM kit.

Re: Ore Cars: A1G or not?

All of my early ore cars (the first roadnames offered without loads) have
Rivarossi-style trucks so that should add more intrigue. Unfortunately, I
bought these second hand so I have no packaging for them.

Of course, that could just mean that Rivarossi was supplying Atlas with
trucks.

Or does it mean that Atlas molded the carbodies and sent them to Italy to
be lettered and trucked?

Or does it mean Atlas molded and lettered them and sent them to Italy to
have trucks installed (unlikely)?

I guess I have always considered them to be A1G regardless because they
first appeared well within the A!G period and the kits, which are the earliest
incarnations but identical to the first four RTRs, appeared in what? 1968?

Waiting to see the three-pack packaging.

Doug

Re: Ore Cars: A1G or not?

I would love it if Atlas went back to the "sans load" version, and sadly I only became interested in ore cars in the 1980s, so have none of the really "original" version. The other ore cars of the era made by/for Minitrix were not exactly the same if I recall. Could it be a case of "upperhandedness" or Atlas ensuring that ONLY they sold the ore cars? Hmmm...

Thanks for this George, and get those photos!

Dennis

The question at hand is whether the first run of ore cars that were marketed by Atlas were produced exclusively by Atlas, or whether they offered Rivarossi product under the Atlas name.

In the latter case, that would make these cars Atlas First Generation.

I thought I was going to have an answer on this when I scored a "three pack" of Atlas Ore Cars, catalog number 2499. It came from the UK via eBay and was one of several that this seller had available. Wait until you see photos of this pack, if you've not come across it before! (Which means I'd better get going on this...)

These three cars came in the usual long plastic box with blue inlay. The insert label is the typical A1G type, and includes the verbiage "Made in Italy 11287 - 1-1970" which is certainly indicative of A1G product. The listing of other available items includes a few European items.

But the ore cars themselves - LS&I 7893, Soo Line 81698 and Great Northern 95039 -- are all stamped "Atlas USA"! These three cars are among the four which were also offered as Atlas Kits (the fourth kit is the DM&IR 32816). Unlike later ore car issues which are no doubt post-A1G, these ore cars do not have simulated ore loads.

Curiouser and curiouser...

Some news about A1G structure kits. Model Power stills produces some of these N scale structure kits. I found some from Towerhobbies.com model train site. Blue Coal mine, Lowenbrau Brewery, Saw Mill, Lumber Yard, Freight Station, and Gravel Deport were offered (The structure names are Model Power). Some of these were available built up and in kit form! I used the Blue Coal mine kit for my Z scale layout. I modified it slightly and it was very appropriate. Towerhobbies.com seems to keep Model Power in stock. I hope this info is useful for some member.
Sincerely,
Randy Bezet\

[Moderator's Note: Towerhobbies.com seems to be mostly R/C equipment. There is a "model trains" button way down on the left which redirects to another site.]

Hello you guys. New member comments. Re: the old Atlas structure kits. Some Atlas/Pola N scale kits are still available from Model Power. The following list was from Towerhobbies.com model train store. (I used the current Model Power structure name)! Blue Coal, Lowenbrau Brewry, Saw Mill, Lumber Yard, Freight Station, and Gravel Deport. Some are available as built ups! These seem to be like the old Atlas structure kits. Tower hobbies keeps Model power structures in stock. Just a note for your information. I used the new Model Power Blue Coal kit for my Z scale mine!

Related to this, I saw a little discussion on the Model Railroader forum
occuring a while back about the original Atlas structures and more
specifically about the Machine Shop.

The guy thought they were Z scale (which hadn't debuted yet at the time of
these structures' release) or something other than N because the doors on
the machine shop were so small as to not allow an N scale boxcar to enter the
building.

He didn't stop to think that those doors wouldn't necessarily be for a rail
car. They are there for, say, some kind of cart or trailer with supplies on
it for the shop to be removed by the little gantry crane in front of the
shop.

Atlas passenger car lighting kits

MIKE

Disclaimer: "I have no connection what-so-ever with these items". I found this tonight on EBay, Lighting kits for Atlas/Rivarossi passenger cars. Not that I am fan of the light systems used in the passenger cars, but someone might need them for restoring cars.

Re: Atlas on EBAY

When I first glanced at the picture, I thought the B&M car was a boxcar
(the picture is a little dark) and I was going to say the set wasn't all
original since a boxcar of that roadname could not be A1G and would be a MiniTrix.

Of course, looking closer, I saw it was the good ol' 2343 "Oppen Hopper".

As George stated, the tankers are additions.

Interesting it has the early box for the track and looks like additional
track was added.

Early power pack too. The little metal one instead of the later
plastic-covered one.

Re: Atlas on EBAY

This brings back a lot of memories. A similar set with the "147" steam loco was the Christmas gift that started me in N Scale. The cars were different.

The Therm Ice tank car pictured with the set is an AHM offering, not part of the original set. But the set itself looks to be in very good to excellent condition.

Certainly might be tempting.

I don't have any affiliation with the seller or the item either.

Re: Atlas on EBAY

Not a bad bidding price to start with..........
On another note: I ran across a Bachmann set from the 60's today

Seller has a buy it now price for $325.00
I'm not in anyway bashing Bachmann or their products but the price is really out
there. Seller says it mint condition but its missing the transformer.......
On another note: That Atlas train set is looking really, really good right
now!!! ( -:

Re: Michael Bishop's Artwork/Packaging Folder

Thanks for the update, Ross.

I will be sending you an email.

The 2852 Lumber Yard, 2853 Passenger Station, and 2858 Roadside Restaurant
were never produced but I do have images of what they were supposed to look
like from an early catalog.

The 2853 Passenger Station was eventually (1990s?), essentially produced as
catalog number 2841 and is still available.

I'm glad to be discussing these items as my concentration has been mainly
on the locomotives (there are some ucoming updates for these too) but I feel
the other A1G pieces are important too.

Re: Michael Bishop's Artwork/Packaging Folder

When I created the Buildings page I used an old Atlas Catalog for the name and description. The box does indeed say Gravel Tower.

I have gone back to the page and changed the name to Gravel Tower. I have also added some photos for the Ranch House and the Factory.

If anyone has some photos of building kits to fill in the blanks on my page, please send them to me. Also, indicate how you would like your name to appear beside the photo as I will provide credit on the page for the photo.

If someone has a kit for sale to fill in one of the blanks in my collection (where there isn't a photo), let me know. I also have a few duplicate kits that I would be willing to trade.

Ross.
