Re: Need all the help possible, I've failed

Randall Smidt

FYI - I posted this to the Z_NTS yahoogroup, but am cross-posting here to try to spread a little better news.

OK, I have emailed and played phone tag with Tom Draper, the NTS Chairman, as well as Lajos. Looks like we can probably get two separate spaces (unfortunately, not very close together) of 30'x30' and 28'x40'. I told them we would take and work from there. Spoke with Lajos last night about redesigning the display(s). I also emphasized to the NTS folks that since about 2/3 of the display is somewhat local, you might be able to rapidly respond to any changes in the space (like if vendors cancel, which seems to happen at every show). Not ideal, but at least it's a foot in the door.

David George did send his application in separately (and very early, one of the first in) so his space is being counted separately from anything we get.

I know a few others are trying to work some other angles as well. I have found in years past that it is much more effective to emphasize how we can work with them and support them (even if they do make the registration process more convoluted than any other show I've ever been involved with) for the good of the hobby as a whole than to bring up the "Z get's no respect angle." Z scale has already proven itself previously at NTS and the NTS staff is generally more accepting of Z scale than other parts of NMRA. In other words, if you want to get ahead, you have to be diplomatic and play their game.

Welcome to the world of cat herding.

I'll update as we get more info.

I'll put this bug out there now as well. We should enter as many modules as possible into the module contest. The paperwork has to be turned in very early (almost as you walk in the door on Thursday since judging is on Friday morning). Just from photos I've seen, I think at least a half a dozen of the modules are contenders for winning top honors. I think you have to be an NMRA member to enter, so if you want to enter, but are not a member, consider joining before NTS. Change from within.

Keep the faith.

Your gallant efforts to get Z-Bend Track to the show and to get Z
folks to participate have not gone unnoticed. Even by those of us
who are sitting on the sideline. But the sideliners are cheering you
on. Don't give up yet. Many RR clubs have probably overbooked
space, so some space may open up.

May I ask if any other Z clubs have applied for space seperately from
Z Track? Another thought is that some of the California Z clubs
recently had a good connection with the NMRA there. They, including
BAZ, gave a wonderful presentation about Z to the NMRA Regional
folks. Perhaps there is a personal contact with some of the NMRA
members there that can be helpful in a plea for assistance to include
Z-Bend Track at the convention. Can you imagine the disaster if N-
Track were missing? Same for Z at a time of growth for this scale
which can equate to a growth for the NMRA.

Hooray for our team!

Thanks,
Robin

I just got off the phone, and shaking. Our Z-Bend Track Module
Collective has no reserved space at the NTS 2008 in Anaheim. We
are on the top of the waiting list, but there is absolutely no
guarantee to get in. I feel, it's my fault. I've tried to collect
enough information to submit an honest reservation package, others
acted faster and reserved all the space available. Unfortunately
all the previous promises, even e-mails became "misunderstandings".
I don't have the power to do anything. Help, help and lots of help
needed.
