Raconteur City: Investigating Leads (Scarlett, open)

Scarlett MacAleister

At 4 p.m. the fake surface of Scarlett’s bed slid open, powered by hydraulics, and revealed her steel sarcophagus, which rose up out of the faux bed and opened, dim lighting coming on around the room. Scarlett sat up in the metal box and looked around, yawning. The windows to the room were sealed with metal shutters, keeping out even the slightest ray of sunshine.

Naked, the shapely redhead stretched before slowly climbing out of her sarcophagus. She’d asked Snow to set a timer to awaken her early because she needed time to prepare before heading out of the evening. As she padded cautiously out into the main living room, she took comfort in the fact all of the shutter’s were sealed as instructed, making the apartment safe for her to be out during daylight.

Scarlett was a little surprised to see Snow had left her everything she needed but had opted not to be here himself when she awakened. He was still a little peeved after her latest rejection of his never-ending requests to be turned. As always, Scarlett knew in a few days he’d be over it.

A diva often threw a tantrum and in time they got over it.

She slipped a thin robe on over her ivory skin and fastened it before opening the cooler on the kitchen island and finding her blood bank withdrawal waiting for her. The vampire consumed the blood, enjoying every last drop before disposing of the bags. It was then time to turn her attention toward the research Snow had left her.

Scarlett flipped open her laptop and brought up the awaiting files Snow had collected for her since she’d put in the request last night. She had to admit it, the young man was resourceful. He had found files on the two subjects she’d asked him to look into.

Luke Reardon’s file contained enough to fill in the blanks. She knew more about him by the time she got done reading, but her had not let too many secrets slip out in his years. Not much more than his ownership of the boat and the tour business. If he’d been in any serious trouble or his if his affiliations with the werewolves had ever come up, it was no where to be found in this file.

Kitty, on the other hand, proved to be even more elusive. Snow had ways into vampire databases, despite her people’s best efforts to keep humans out. He had found nothing on the young woman, leading her to believe she was relatively new in the vampire world, she was very good at covering her tracks or, the Midnight Society had done an excellent job of making sure there was no information out there about her.

Scarlett didn’t know why…she was just curious about the girl. But it was not important right now, she needed to focus instead on the new cartel trying to come to Raconteur City. Snow had gathered real estate documents on the owner of the estate she’d followed the crew from the docks to the night before.
Turned out the estate was sold to a woman named Lola Vasquez about a month earlier. Paperwork indicated she was from Puerto Rico. Snow’s attempts to find out more about her ended up running into dead ends. It was his conclusion, and Scarlett’s, based on the evidence, that Lola was a cover and the real owner of the estate remained anonymous.??Interestingly enough, the vehicles the cartel crew had been driving in, their plates all came back to Lola Vasquez’s business – an import/export company in Puerto Rico.

Scarlett sighed. That was about as far as Snow had gotten. He would continue seeking information, he told her in an email, but he was exhausted and needed beauty sleep.

Scarlett closed the laptop and headed to the bathroom to take a shower before heading out on the town for the evening…

Luke pulled his phone out and texted Scarlett, ‘If you need me tonight send me the place and time. I can bring bears if you want.’

Scarlett MacAleister

The redhead, dressed in a leather bodysuit, was in the garage of her apartment building, preparing to climb onto her motorcycle, when the cell phone in her pocket chimed. She took out the device and read the text that had arrived and discovered a message from Luke.
After reading it she typed back, "Meet me at the vacant lot at Fairchild and Durant in one hour. We'll go from there to check out the house."
She then fired up the bike and rolled out of the garage and into the night streets of Raconteur City...

Scarlett rolled up into the vacant lot at Fairchild and Durant on her motorcycle and she shut down the engine. Removing the helmet she hung it over the handlebar and stepped off the bike, looking around. It was dark, but her vampire senses allowed her to see and she could hear the slightest noises, like a mouse running through the underbrush in the untended lot.?
She checked the time and frowned. Luke was running behind. She walked out into the overgrown lot, pushing through the high weeds and grass until she arrived at the treeline. If her bearings were correct, about 300 yards through these woods and they would be at the edge of the property where the cartel was staying.?
Scarlett checked the time again and glanced back toward the road, looking to see if Reardon had arrived yet.

The old pickup turned off it’s headlights and coasted to a stop just past the corner. The street lights were ominously unlit. Luke peered through the darkness. This was not his element but he’d offered to help. He turned off the overhead light then opened the door and climbed out.?

After a few minutes walking slowly up the street he found Scarlett’s bike. The motor was still hot.? He waited by her bike. She could see him better than he could see her.

The redhead saw the headlights of the truck pull into the weed filled lot and she began to make her way up from the back of the property to walk over to the truck. As Reardon got out of his vehicle, the black-leather clad vampire approached and gave him a smile.
"Thought I might have to go over there alone," she said. "A few hundred yards beyond the edge of this lot is that estate where these cartel people are staying. I want to get close and check the perimeter, maybe even go over the fence and inspect the compound."

Luke touched the camera that hung from his neck and grinned. “I’m as useless as a wet hen but I will do everything I can to back you up.? This old digital has infrared so at least I can see a little. If I hang back it would help more. I’m not exactly a ninja.”

Scarlett smiled as they walked toward the back of the property, down from the field of weeds to the treeline. There they worked along the edge of a 10 foot tall fence untilthey came around to a position behind the estate. From there, in a wooded area several hundred yards from the road, in the trees and bushes, they arrived at a vantage point which gave them a descent view of the backside of the estate where Scarlett had tracked the cartel members earlier.
The vampire swept the area with her vision, which covered infared and enhanced the dim moonlight. "There's guards up around the house. Maybe six outside, human."
The redhead looked around some more and saw movement inside the house through the windows. She looked to Luke, "Can you see anything with your camera?"

Luke studied the old camera’s screen.? He zoomed the lens and more blurry images appeared in the window.?

“Hard to tell. At least two that I know of up there. It’s dark in there or I wouldn’t see anything but a white glare.” He hunted the other windows but they were either shaded or there was no activity to see.

“That’s all I got.” He noticed something on the ground and it gave him some assurance.? A diving board.? That meant there was a swimming pool filled with lovely water. He grinned in the darkness.

Scarlett gave Luke a nod. "Then see what you can see with your camera and get pictures of anything interesting," she told him. "I'm going to take a little stroll."
The redhead turned toward the fence, crouched and leaped more than 10 feet into the air, vaulting over the fence and landing on the other side with barely a sound.
She looked back at Luke and gave him a wink before she turned and disappeared almost magically into the darkness. The vampire slipped silently through the frees, moving with unnatural speed and nimbleness through the trees and brush surrounding the property. Reaching the edge of the trees, she looked across the open yard and spotted several cameras monitoring the property.
Like a black, shadowy blur, Scarlett darted across the yard, arriving at the outside wall of the house, where she pressed her back flat against the brick and then she moved along quietly until she reached a window. With her enhanced hearing, she focused to see if she could hear anything going on inside the house.?

New Javier Delgado and Sani Redwind (Cartel NPCS)

?

Inside the cartel owned house in Raconteur City, Javier Delgado was reading over reports he’d acquired on the various criminal enterprises at work in this area. Already he was making headway into disrupting the activities of the yakuza and the Jamaican Posse and as soon as they had been brought to their knees, he was ready to work on the smaller operations in and around the city – making way for his mistress and her cartel to come here and take over.

The grizzled looking Hispanic, his hair pulled back in a ponytail, dressed in a black t-shirt and fatigue pants, sat at a desk in the mansion’s study. Across the room, seated on a mat on the floor was young Sani Redwind, a Native American, who sat cross-legged, his eyes closed, deep in meditation.

Delgado flipped a page in the report and continued reading, just as a knock came at the door. He looked annoyed. His human mercenaries, though well-trained and disciplined, at times tended to require more guidance than he wanted to give them.

“What is it?” he asked, the annoyance in his voice obvious.

The door opened and a big, white male stepped through the door. He was dressed similar to Javier, all in black, an H&K MP-5 submachine gun hanging from a strap on his shoulder.

“We’ve got motion detected on the grounds,” he said. “Cameras aren’t picking up a thing…even on thermal.”:

Javier gave a snort, “Not everything gives off a heat signature, Mike.”

Javier stood and started toward the door. Mike glanced over at Sani and frowned. “That kid is always meditating.”

Delgado reached Mike and stood right up in his face, “He has to if he wants to control the beast inside him,” his hissed. “Now, show me your disturbance.”

Mike nodded and led the vampire to the nearby security suite where there were a couple of mercenaries manning arrays of monitors, watching the grounds intently. Mike went to his console, pulled up the motion sensor that had been trip a couple of minutes earlier, then displayed the video recording of that area of the yard which corresponded with the time on the motion detection hit.

“See, nothing,” Mike muttered.

Javier replayed it a couple of times, slowing it down over and over until there was a faint image, almost like a shadow, that darted past the camera. Slowly, a smile spread over the Mexican’s face.

“We have a visitor,” Javier said in a low voice.

Mike nodded, “Not human?”
“No,” Delgado confirmed, standing and stepping back from the monitor. “It’s her.”

The mercenary raised an eyebrow, “Her…you mean the redhead we saw last night watching from the street? The one you said followed us from the docks?”

“The same,” Delgado told him. “Take three of the men, take dogs, sweep the perimeter.”

Mike nodded, keyed his walkie-talkie and called three mercs to the security room. He then grabbed several magazines for his subgun. These clips were marked with silver tape. He popped the magazine currently in his MP-5, cleared the chamber and loaded the special clip.

When the other three showed, he looked at them and said, “Arm with silver. We may have a special visitor.”

The men nodded and armed themselves accordingly, before heading out the door. As they left, Delgado loaded a silver clip into his sidearm and grabbed his sword off a rack I the security office, next to the weapon lockers.

He returned to the study and secured the metal shudders son the window with the push of a button. As they closed, Sani’s eyes opened and he looked to Javier. “What is it?”
“Possible intruder,” Delgado told him. “Possibly the girl we saw last night.”

Sani nodded, “The vampire?”
“驰别蝉.”

“Should I…change….go have a look?” Sani asked, standing up.

Delgado shook his head, “Not yet. Your transformation here, in the neighborhood our employer intends to make her home at, could lead to some unnecessary attention. I’ll let you know when I need you to change.”

Sani nodded. He armed himself with a pistol and a big hunting knife he put into the sheath at his side. The two then waited for security to check things out.

Outside, Mike Jablonski and his team of three mercenaries stepped out of the mansion into the backyard. They had two big German Shepherds on leashes which they used to guide them as they went in separate directions around the house…
