Re: Port Vega: Gen - the Russians strike back

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

(Gen)

Gen profusely thanked Ari for the food - she had been _really_ hungry - and left him an extra $20 as a tip when she paid for the meal.? One of the reasons she was one of his favorite customers.

When she left Ari's Dockside though she didn't head back to the lighthouse.? Instead, she started making her way towards the more secluded parts of the district where the dockside opened out onto the bay, seemingly wandering carelessly when in fact she was keeping her senses quite alert.? Back at Ari's, she'd gotten the feeling that she was being watched, though she hadn't seen anything when she discreetly glanced around.? Now though, her suspicions were confirmed.? She was being followed, by at least three individuals, all spread out, talking in whispers on cell phones.? In Russian whispers.

Silently the androgyne cursed herself for being careless. She should've known Dmitri would still be after her. Or if not him, one of the other gangsters whose bagmen she'd been ripping off.? She needed to get out of sight and then airborne. Fast.? Darting into an alleyway, Gen kicked off her shoes and began willing both her wings and her gecko-feet and hands to emerge, but before she could take off or leap onto one of the alley walls a figure stepped casually into the alley entrance, a streetlight casting a longish shadow onto the ground. ?

"Going so soon?" the figure asked. ? A male voice, Gen noted.? Young, from the sound of it.? No trace of a Russian accent, but there was still an accent.? Not a local one though.? "I don't think so," the figure went on.? "Not unless you want your Greek friend's place turned into a crematorium. With your friend in it," he added with a shrug.

Gen wondered if he - whoever he was - was bluffing.? But she didn't want to risk Ari's diner - let alone his life - finding out.? "What do you want?" she asked, trying not to sound nervous.

"Me?" the figure asked, a snicker in his voice as she stepped further into the alley.? The light from over a nearby rear entrance fell across his face.? He was indeed young, younger than Gen would've expected.? Fresh-faced, like he was barely old enough to shave, wearing clothes that seemed chosen to try and make him look tougher and smoking a cigarette to add to the effect.? Blond, unruly hair and a cheeky grin, but his eyes... something about his eyes made her think predator.? "I just wanted to see if you were real and not something Dmitri and his friends had dreamed up in a drunken stupor."? The youth's eyes flicked as he took in the androgyne's wings and he snickered yet again.? "I guess? you're real enough."

"That's all you want?" Gen asked warily, flexing her wings cautiously to be ready to take off the moment the stranger made a sudden move. "To see if I was real?? Well, I'm real alright."

"But then, this isn't about what I want," the kid said, shrugging as he stubbed out his cigarette on the bricks of the alley wall.? "It's about what Dmitri wants.? And Dmitri wants you gone.? Permanently."

With that, the kid raised his hand and pointed at Gen casually.? The androgyne immediate leapt into the air, her wing beating fast to hover about twenty feet above the stranger, who continued to point at her.? At first nothing seemed to happen, but suddenly Gen could feel the air around her changing, an odd prickling moving over her skin and a smell of ozone suddenly making itself known.? She instinctively moved higher, but the prickling and the smell not only stayed with her but grew stronger.?

"They call me Lightning Rod," the kid said, his grin growing wider and decidedly malicious as his pointing hand continued to track the androgyne.? "In about five seconds, you'll see why."

Gen immediately turned and began flying away, wings beating furiously as she tried to put as much distance between her and this unexpected threat as possible, heading out over the water. She assumed he wouldn't be able to follow her there. Glancing back the kid's figure was growing smaller back on the docks, but not only was the tingling around her not abating, it was peaking.? And then...

The lightning struck her in mid-air, the massive electric shock disrupting all of her senses as she plummeted from the sky, her body convulsing.? Gills, she thought desperately as darkness enveloped her.? Need... gills...?

She didn't notice when she hit the water like a stone.? Or when she sank beneath the surface.? The kid on shore did though. In fact, he'd managed to capture it all on his smartphone.? "Not so tough," he snickered as he thumbed a quick-dial and waited.? "Hey, Dmitri," he said when the connection went through.? "Got a vid you'd like to see.? Sending it now."? He thumbed another set of buttons.? "I'll be expecting the rest of the money by tomorrow.? Let me know if you've got any other problems you need help with.? This one was too easy.? See ya."

With that, the kid shut his phone off, slipped it back into his pocket and began strolling away from the docks.? "Oh, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor," he sang softly to himself.? "Would you be mine?? Would you be mine?"
