The voice chuckled. ¡°You already know who I am Scarlett. We¡¯ve worked together on quite a few jobs. Beside, if I were you I would reconsider, consider since I know you have some very powerful enemies. If I¡¯m correct you, The Tempest is after you. Which is way worse than killing a prince who is already marked for death. Either you kill her and take the money or someone else does. And if you take the job we can get the Tempest off your back.¡±
(Scarlett)
Scarlett wasn't sure what to make of the whole situation. As a soldier for the Vampire Nation she'd worked beside many vampires over the years. More recently it had been humans...and other awakened beings.?
There was also the distinct possibility this was Tempest; part of her plot to destroy Scarlett by getting her to murder the new prince, thus marking her for death. Not Tempest's typical approach. She figured her former mistress would want to personally inflict as much suffering on Scarlett as she could before she ended her life.
Tempest was her problem and as nice as it would be to have her taken out of the picture, she wasn't going to kill the prince to make that happen. She needed to somehow turn this around to her advantage. She hastily hatched a plan and spoke.
"I'm intrigued. Having Tempest removed from the equation would be beneficial," Scarlett said. "However, this is not a decision I'm prepared to make tonight. Call me back at nightfall tomorrow and I will have an answer for you."
WIthout allowing a reply, Scarlett ended the call. She turned off the phone so the caller could not immediately call back, nor would anyone be able to track her movements. To make sure of that, she reached into a saddlebag on the bike and pulled out a Faraday shield -- a bag for her cellphone that blocked the signal she used to make sure she couldn't be tracked -- and she put it away.
Afterwards, she fired up the bike and checked the time. There were a few short hours of darkness left. Reasonably, she needed to head for home, but she wanted to give a warning to the new prince. Hopefully, the Midnight Society would allow her to spend her daylight hours inside their walls. If not, she knew of a couple of motels nearby where she could hole up while the sun was out...not ideal, but an acceptable option.
Scarlett then drove the motorcycle across town on her way to the Midnight Society...
