¡°Oh great, the witching hour,¡± Luke muttered.
¡°I should come with you,¡± Jones said with some trepidation.?
¡°Forget that. Just take care of Tiger if I never come back.¡±
¡°Right, call me later,¡± Jones said then hung up.
Luke pulled over and stopped his pickup. He had some time to burn. He climbed out of the old pickup and headed back to the marina on foot. He found a good location for spying and sat down to look out onto the parking lot and his boat. He watched and waited.?
An hour later Tiger made her way ashore and walked out of the parking lot. She was likely headed home. It wasn¡¯t that far a walk.?
Luke had seen no one of interest or anything unusual.? He considered that a good thing. Two people he¡¯d known in his life, one a dear friend were now both very dead. The first murder was a hidious slashing of Billy Wright. A boy Luke had known from high school. Of late he¡¯d been a small time drug dealer. Nothing special until he¡¯d wound up dead.?
The murder of Charlie Talman had been a terrible blow. He¡¯d been a good friend and he knew his wife and kids well.?
Luke snapped his fingers. He knew just what he had to do. He approached the old two story home in Glade Park. Luke knocked on the door. A woman, dark hair and in her forties looked at him with blurry eyes.
¡°Oh Luke,¡± she cried. She hugged him in the doorway, her head against his chest. He could feel fresh tears on his shirt. Cindy squeezed him tight.
¡°I¡¯m so sorry.¡± She finally released him and they both went inside.
¡°Luke,¡± Monica was waiting. She had a large lump in her belly. She also hugged him. ¡°Daddy,¡± she whispered.
¡°I know.¡±
Monica was Charlie¡¯s old Daughter and was very pregnant. She had the same gleam in her eye she got from her father. ¡°I just wanted to stop by. See if there was anything I could do.¡±
¡°Being here is a big help,¡± Cindy said. ¡°Now you must stay for dinner."
Luke stayed late at old Charlie¡¯s place. They watched an old movie and looked at old photos. It was a difficult time but they all needed something to do that made it all not seem pointless.
He said his goodbyes and promised to come back, to keep in touch. He said he would. He was looking forward to that new baby.
He sat in his truck for a long time. Then he started it up and went on down town. It was time to get some answers.
He parked his truck in front of the towering building. There was no name affixed to the complex but everyone in town called it the Dark Tower.
Dressed in jeans, loafers and a Hawaiian shirt Luke took the elevator down one flight to the LL level. The LL level he thought sounded like how he was feeling. As low as you could go.
Another guard greeted him. ¡°I was invited.¡±
¡°You are?¡± The man looked coldly at Luke or maybe it was his attire. ¡°Luke Reardon.¡±
(Scarlett MacAleister)
Scarlett remained silent, as did the guards, as they escorted her down the elevator into the sub-level of the building. When the lift stopped, the doors slid open and Scarlett stepped out into the lobby, her eyes, ears and sense of smell all tuned in to detect anything out of the ordinary. She confirmed the presence of a girl by her scent a moment before she stepped out the doors, confirming once she saw her that she was indeed a vampire as well.
The redhead, dressed in a black leather bodysuit and longcoat, stood there and looked around, her eyes then training on Kitty. "You must be the welcoming party?"
(Kitty)
Kitty was sitting on the arm of the couch when Scarlett came into the lobby, "Well, I suppose. I am Kitty, and you must be the infamous Scarlett MacAleister. Prince Dario has been expecting you. Was he the Prince when last you were here?"
(tag Kitty, Prince)
