Heaton & Manningham (Bradford)

My BROADLEYs seem to have originated in the Heaton/Manningham area of Bradford (although there is a rumour that they came from Halifax).? They belonged to the Baptist church (now demolished - twice), and I have done quite a lot of work to reconstruct the BROADLEY family tree there from the Burial Registers and the Memorial Inscriptions in the graveyard (CD from the Bradford Family History Society - ).? Many other local names have appeared during this research.
The is a beautiful place, and well worth a visit.? It is maintained by a small group of volunteers, but they could do with more help if anyone is living nearby.? One of their leaders, Margaret Gray, has recently published a history of the Heaton Baptist Church, and some of the more memorable residents.? Details are on the graveyard's Facebook page, although you have to scroll down a little way to find it.

Re: Surname Interests

Hello Peter,

Not to worry. I just wondered, as my grandparents had friends they holidayed with in Scarborough, but they came from Leeds not Sheffield.

Hope you manage to track down the family you're looking for.

Best,
John

This is a real off the wall challenge for me because I know almost nothing about them! I met them a couple of times 60 odd years ago. They used to holiday with my grandparents. I believe they came from Sheffield. I¡¯m just starting out on the challenge!

Wheldrake, Weldrake, Welldrake, Wheldrick, Weldrick - any variation, anywhere

Hi everyone

Still looking for the marriage of Robert Weldrake and Susannah ? somewhere in Yorkshire in the early 1700s. The couple settled in Birstall parish, near Huddersfield, and had children born there from 1708 onwards but I have no idea where they came from. Susannah died 1737, Robert 1743 so birth dates likely around 1670s/1680s?? Seems to be another childThomas who was not baptised in Birstall but married Jane WHITEHEAD there in 1739 and then moved to Hunslet.?

I've seen 68 different spellings of Weldrake so any Robert and Susannah combination no matter how unlikely won't be ruled out!?

Can anyone end this nearly 30 year quest?!?

Jane?

Re: WILSON West Leeds 1800 to 1900

Mel Smith

I can think of a couple of answers

Why did she use her maiden name in 1851
Possibly the enumerator asked who is liveinh here and Elizabeth responded with myself and my daughter Ann without stating her married name
Alternatively I have a family where the father died in 1879 and in the 1881 census the mother used her maiden name and the entire family is listed under that name in spite of it not being their registered surname.?
As for two Josiah's - It's possible that Josiah was actually staying overnight of for a few days with his grandmother so he is listed with her AND the parents also included him with their family group in spite of the fact that he was not there that specific night. I have seen that in several cases where people were enumertaed twice in different residences.

Thanks Lin,?
I have copy birth certs for 3 brothers, Josiah 1856, John William 1859, Harry 1862.? All show John as father (Dyer or Dyer's Labourer) and Ann Wilson (nee Akeroyd) as mother.? ?From other sources, docs and census etc, this Josiah is 100% my GGF.?

In the 1851 Census, there is Ann Akeroyd living in the household of Elizabeth Akeroyd (Widow). But if she married in 1841 to John Wilson, why use her maiden name in 1851.??
In the same 1851 census, there is a John Wilson, Living with sister, Mary Ann Wilson, in Richmond Court (this is where Josiah is born in 1856).?

In the 1861 census there is a Josiah Wilson, 4years, Grandson, living with Elizabeth Akeroyd, (Ann's mother?) in Burley St West Leeds. In the same census Ann Wilson, Living with Josiah Wilson, in Baker St West Leeds, just around the corner. With Josiah (4) and John William (2). I was suspecting 2 x Wilson families, with John and Ann as parent, and Josiah as first born in 1856.? But extensive searching and investigation does NOT show any other Josiahs born anywhere in Leeds in 20 year period, there's only ONE of them.?

So maybe you are correct Lin, there looks like there could be 2 x Ann Akeroyd. Or it could be one big mixed up family.?

John William 1859 Mar Q Leeds, mother's maiden name AKEROYD Vol 9b Page 367

I couldn't find any others using the surname WILSON mother's maiden name AKED

Just a thought - have you looked into the possibility that John married two women called AKEROYD?? I've come across similar couples where this has happened which could explain the long gap.

Re: WILSON West Leeds 1800 to 1900

I see no reason why he should not be a hairdresser. My ggggrandfather was a hairdresser/wigmaker/perfumier in Sheffield in the 1830s. His son was also a hairdresser? aa was HIS son. The old man became latterly a pyrotechnist giving firework displays. In addition there? are many references in literature to hairdressers who normally visited clients houses rather than having a shop?
