This is as spelt on my Grandfather Joseph EDWARDS` birth certificate.
However the marriage entry in Halifax register has WHITWORTH and Hannah
signed with that name.? Was this a regular alternative name for WHITWAM or
just a one off?? Joseph`s brother`s certificate has WHITWAIN but that is
obviously just a mistranscription at the registry office.

It reads

As in the case of the wills, you don't need to put all the details in

Search for the year 1875

The surname = WHITTEY
Forename = Ann
Select Female
District if Death = Bradford

That is all you need to enter, then search, one hit as I posted earlier

It sounds like you are trying to order using the name WHITLEY?

Or are adding information which is not needed

You need to use the name it is transcribed as in the GROs own indexes on their site, which is WHITTEY

You don't even need to add Ann as there is only one death registered in that year indexed as WHITTEY

I can assure you its there with the three options of digital, PDF or certificate

The easiest way to order birth and death certificates prior to 1924 at least is to use the GRO's own search at
If you do the search for Ann Whitley died 1875 in Bradford it will fail
But change the option to "phonetically similar variations" for the surname you will find her
She is indexed by the GRO as WHITTEY (You can suggest a change to that )

Once you have found her there Click on the dot beside her name and you can order the digital certificate for ?3

Remember that the indexes here are totally independent of those on any other site
Most of the others are taken from one of the many microfiche versions of the old paper indexes
The digital version as in the GRO's new indexes were taken from new images of the original records submitted to them

Re: Death Index

Maureen
You need to be careful when entering the dates and be careful because

the first date required is the date of probate which is 19 Oct 1869
the second date is the date of death 13 Sep 1869
Also make sure that what you enter is EXACTLY what is on the probate not what you think it should be

Thank you Lesley and Carole. I dont think this death is mine as my Ann WHITELY was definitely born in 1800., so would be about 64yrs.

Nivard Thomas died 13 September 1869. He lived in Four Lane Ends Manningham. Probate was in Wakefield.

Re: Death Index

You do not need to put in all the details, thats why its not coming up for you

All you need is the year, the surname and key words Four Lanes

Nothing else is needed

And as I said you don't need to even search for it, you have the details to order it (where you do need to fill in the detail)

I suspect the death you require is this one

WHITTEY, ANN 74
GRO Reference: 1875 M Quarter in BRADFORD YORKSHIRE Volume 09B Page 161

Although it looks wrong, if you check the GRO index on freebmd its indexed twice with the same reference there but only the above on the GOV GRO site

Ann WHITLEY 74 Bradford 9b 161
Ann WHITTEY 74 Bradford 9b 161

The GROs indexes on their own site were compiled completely differently to the GRO index on Freebmd

But given the evidence I suspect this is her death reg

Re: Death Index

Hi Maureen

I can assure you it is spelled WHITLEY in the probate calendar

<>

And as its the same probate calender on the GOV site where you order it, its also spelled the same way as WHITLEY

So thats the spelling you need to use to order the will

The only difference between the available probate calendars on Ancestry & Findmypast is if there is a folio number on the Probate sites copy

In this case there isn't so you don't really need to find it on the GOV site, just order using the information on the probate calendar from Ancestry or Findmypast

However if you want to find it, search the GOV site for WHITLEY year 1869 and key word Four Lanes, result one page with your entry on it
