American White Pelicans
5
I am forwarding a report from Bonnie Pranter of 75 Amer. White Pelicans that have landed on Willow Lake this morning. They are floating around in two groups, seen from the west shore but probably visible from several of the Willow Lake viewpoints. Bird sighting
3
About 4:15 p.m., I saw two female hummingbirds come to one of my feeders. One was an Anna's but the other was definitely smaller, with some streaking on the lower, central throat and rufous flanks. Green back. I believe it was a Calliope Hummingbird. Karen O'Neil

New arrivals at the lake, at least for me, are five breeding plumage American Avocet and two Franklin's Gulls. Right now these birds are in the northern half of the lake between the boat dock and the zoo area. -- Sue Drown Prescott

Barrow's Still at Watson
3 Goldeneye are visible from the Watson Lake overlook this afternoon, despite the wind. I believe the two females are Common Goldeneye, but they are diving quite a bit. -- Sue Drown Prescott

Barrow's Goldeneye
There was a male Barrow's Goldeneye in the central part of Watson Lake this morning at ~10am --- out from the main boat dock. It was actively diving with several Lesser Scaup and a female Goldeneye that I was not sure of the i.d. It has a very pronounced, crescent shaped white region between the eye and bill, as opposed to the more rounded white spot of a Common Goldeneye. Also, the back/wings have more black than a COGO. See attached photos. Steve Burk

Pelican follow-up
The lone American White Pelican (N09) is the only one I saw this morning on Willow Lake, after ~40 pelicans came and went yesterday (see attached photo). Be aware, however, that the tags that are very prominent in this photo often can disappear for long periods of time beneath the wing feathers. I originally notified the research group in Utah about pelican N09 on Oct.19. Steve

American White Pelicans
3
This morning I photographed (from the northside) a group of about 40 American White Pelicans clustered tightly together on the southwest shore of Willow Lake. Since this is a favorite location of pelican N09 who spent the winter in Prescott, I assume he/she is among this group. In fact, N09 may be the reason they landed there. Now it will be interesting to see if N09 migrates onward with them. I'll post a photo on eBird. Steve Burk

Sandhill Cranes

I was at Willow Lake this afternoon. The Sandhill Cranes were very visible foraging to the east of Cottonwood Peninsula along the current west shore of the main lake. Along the trail/road that goes south of the peninsula, there was a porcupine perched in a tree on the west side of the trail. A photographer there said there are actually three porcupines. American Tree Sparrow
Just an update to say that the American Tree Sparrow is still at Badger Springs Wash. This morning, it was in the regularly reported spot, just up the wash from the trailhead, where someone has marked the point in the wash with two crossed sticks. Sue Drown -- Sue Drown Prescott

American Tree Sparrow at Agua Fria NM Badger Springs
Hi all, The American Tree Sparrow that has been wintering at the Badger Springs Wash in the Agua Fria National Monument continues today. A good county/AZ bird to start off the New Year! The bird is loosely associating with some White-crowned Sparrows and is mostly foraging in the weeds along the wash. I’ve seen it in the same general area the times I’ve look for it which is North/upwash about 1/4 mile from where the trail intersects the wash. Bryan Patrick

Golden-crowned and Fox Sparrow in Prescott
2
In advance of the Christmas Bird Count, I decided to scan my local patch for Curve-billed Thrashers since they breed here and Carl T has asked me to stake them out in the past for the count. The neighborhood is considered “private" and some neighbors can be less than "accepting" to visitors. Anyway, the thrashers didn’t disappoint. In a flock of White-crowned Sparrows this AM, I had a Fox and first winter Golden-crowned Sparrow. Our resident Cooper’s Hawk swooped through that scattered everything and I have not seen either bird since. Both birds are new for my local patch which is SW of Stoneridge, off of Old Black Canyon Rd. Hopefully they’ll stick around and/or make an appearance for the count. Bryan Patrick

Yavapai portion of Lake Pleasant
Forwarding some info from Rich Armstrong of Sedona. He reports that he tried to bird the Yavapai portion of Lake Pleasant today, only to find that it is closed off on weekdays and only accessible on Friday through Sunday. No info on how long that closure is in effect. So, plan accordingly if you are following sightings from Lake Pleasant. Susan Drown Prescott, AZ -- Sue Drown Prescott

Hybrid Ross's x Snow Goose
After birding this morning with Felipe Guerrero at Willow Lake, I examined my photos and found that what we first thought was a Ross's Goose was actually a Ross's x Snow Goose hybrid. Relative to the Ross's ideal, this bird had a longer neck, longer bill, rounded base to the bill, and small grinning patch. See Sibley (2nd Ed.) p. 11. Also had Greater White-fronted Geese, Snow Geese, Tundra Swans, a pelican, 3 Horned Grebes, and a lot more. See eBird post. -- Walt Anderson

Rufous-backed Robin
There is a Rufus -backed Robin on Tarra Avenue at the north end where it turns into a cul-de-sac and dead ends. This is a small neighborhood near the Willow Watson roundabout and it has lots of no trespassing signs. I saw the bird from the North end of the road at the cul-de-sac. You will see a small ditch with water and a thick hedge on the east side. Sue Drown -- Sue Drown Prescott
