Decaling Acrylic-Painted Models
2
Henry, I've used Badger, Tamiya, Testors, Floquil, and Vallejo acrylic paints to finish models. There may be one or two brands I've forgotten. If you're painting a die cast steam engine model (say, one from this list :)), clean the painted parts thoroughly and let dry. I use Dawn dishwashing detergent and an old toothbrush to scrub off grease, grime, and fingerprints. Once you have the model clean and then painted, let it dry/cure at least overnight. More time does not hurt things. Once the surface has dryed at least overnight, I spray Testors Glosscote over the portions of the model getting decals. I use spray cans (I don't own an airbrush) and I warm up the Glosscote in a pan of heated (not boiling) water. Heat the water, take it off the stove (or out of the microwave) and then put the can into the pan/cup for about 5 minutes. It seems to mix and spray better that way. Let that dry overnight (more time does not hurt things). Decal the model; once you're done, let the model sit overnight. The next day, spray another coat of gloss to seal things; this will also hide at least some of the decal film. If you want a glossy, freshly shopped look, you're done. I like a flat finish, so I spray the completed model with a coat of Testors Dullcote (letting it sit for about 5 minues in a pan of heated water helps a lot with mixing, even more so than with Glosscote). Once you've gotten through this, you can add the clear styrene (or whatever you like to represent glass) and other final touches. Doug Kisala

Here's the one thing I need help with. I'm not an admin or moderator in the current (Yahoo) group, so I can't perform this task: Step 2 Send an invite from your Yahoo Group to [email protected] After this is done, please respond back only to me, there will be one other step to perform: Step 3 We will accept the invite and then send you an email directing you to make the [email protected] member a moderator. I would expect it'll take less than a day, and then all members in the current list should get migrated. Thanks, Brian Pickering Brian Pickering bpickeri@...

I'll try to get to it tonight. Last night was stuffing invitations to an Eagle Court of Honor, and doing my weekly "Money Stuff*." Thanks, Brian Pickering *what some would call, "How am I going to hide this week's hobby purchases from wifey?" :-) Brian Pickering bpickeri@...

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Charles Peck <lnnrr152@...> Date: Sun, Apr 29, 2018 at 3:24 PM Subject: Request contact the group To: yardbirdstrains-owner@... Hello Mr Bush, With the survival of yahoo groups in question, many groups are migrating to groups.io This can only be set in motion by the owner of record of the group desiring to migrate. If you would, please, poll the group to see if it is agreeable to most and if so, contact the groups.io and get us moved. Alternatively, perhaps you could hand over ownership to a volunteer to handle. In either case, the group would like to hear from you. Thank you, Chuck Peck

Bowser DC-71 new motor noise
11
Hi group, I'm building a bowser HO steam loco I got on EBAY and I've just tried out the DC-71 motor. It makes a lot of noise that seems to come from the brushes. When I pinch back on the brush spring to ease off the pressure, there is less noise. Is a break-in period normal and how much will that fix the noise? I also see some rust on the motor poles. Might that cause some imbalance and make noise? What's a good way to clean off the rust? I cleaned off the commutator so it is bright and shiny. I gave the bearings a little oil. Any tips? Thanks. Fred,

I'm trying to add a Cal Scale Passenger pilot to the nose of this unit . this frame won't be a snap to hang it under the nose . I thought of thin sheet plastic to curve and bond to it ? If I ''chicken out" I can leave the door closed on the pilot ?? It's already dolled up pretty well . Just want to add that last piece of ''jewelry'' ?? Henry H.

Questions about a Barney loco ??
LOL !! I have a Bowser Nclass 2-10-2 that needs to pull up its footboard pilot . Right now it's way , way too low for railhead clearance .. The situation is this , the pilot gets pulled up into the frame from below . But then it needs to line up with the huge air tank that sits on top ! You can get close but no bueno . Do you use a rubber [?] shim under that tank to pull it up some more ?? Thanks all ? Barney and I will be waiting your replies ?? Henry H. Moderator ?? PS feel free to add more ??

Loco derailing - Bachman Spectrum 460
7
Greetings and happy holidays to all. I have a Bachman Spectrum 4-6-0 that runs very well otherwise, but the pilot truck tends to derail on a certain segment of my handlaid 18" radius track. All of my other equipment, including a Spectrum 4-4-0, runs just fine on this section. I have re-gauged and re-spiked several times but this engine pilot truck keeps jumping off. I checked the pilot wheelsets with my NMRA gauge, OK. Any suggestions for fixing the problem? Should I add weight to the pilot truck?? Thanks in advance! Fred Hanes San Jose, California

Bowser motor break-in??
2
I have a Bowser loco kit I bought on EBAY that had probably sat on the shelf for some years. I just tried out the DC-71 motor for the first time and it is very noisy. Does this motor improve after some break-in period? If I squeeze the motor brushes so they don't push as hard, the noise is less. I'm running it by itself, not attached to the model. I notice that the motor poles have some rust. Is that making the motor unbalanced? what should I do to remove the rust? I have cleaned up the commutator so it is nice and shiny. I oiled the bearings. Any help? Thanks!
