Pulleys and Belts instead of gears 13
Similar to the early locos that Athearn powered with rubber bands many years ago, I am going to try and re-power an old Mantua 0-4-0 with a pulley and belt, the advantage being quiet operation. So I'm wondering if anyone on here ever tried this approach. Richard in Vermont

1mm screws 3
I don't recall if I posted this request before, but here goes: I'm looking for a source of 1 millimeter valve gear screws. PFM once stocked them many moons ago. I have just a few and need some more for a couple of pending projects. I've looked at most of the obvious small hardware sites on the net. I can fine regular 1 mm screws, but not the ones with the shoulder. IMHO they are much nicer to work with than rivets. Any help out there? Thanks, ebtnut

Radio aerial[s]
As if there aren't enough things going on ??b I'm trying to find a decent photo of a n antenna system on an M1a long distance tender . small doggy house and buckeye trucks ?? Many , many differences . Looked at a BLH model , got closer ? Looked like insulators / standoffs on the Dog house ? 2 Of them ? Long run down the tender back ? Am I getting close ?? Henry H.

Cary vs Bowser M1 8
Henry, The question of the differences between Cary and Bowser M1 boilers is kind of a complicated one because there are many differences and also many similarities. Frankly, one of the reasons I wanted to acquire that Cary M1a that was recently on eBay was because of the original brass frame and the instructions that went with it that would have completed the story of the Cary boiler for me. I guess that will have to wait. Here are some points about the two products that I am aware of currently: 1. The Cary boiler predates the Bowser boilers by about 25 years. 2. The Cary boiler was meant to be used with existing models of that day. What I'm not sure about is whether it was meant to be used with parts from a Varney 4-8-4 or a Bowser (Redlands) 4-8-2 or either. I don't know if Cary offered a complete set of brass details back then or if it was up to the modeler to find them. That was something I was hoping to find out. Meanwhile the Bowser PRR M1 was offered as a complete kit with a complete super detail kit also available. 3. The Cary boiler was made out of their characteristic Lead/Antimony alloy and was very heavy by itself. The Bowser boiler was cast from lighter Zinc and required additional weight to give it comparable traction to the Cary boilered locos. 4. The Cary boiler allowed one to model a PRR M1a. Bowser had kit variations that allowed one to model the PR M1, M1a or M1b. 5. Bowser did eventually absorb Cary Loco Works and added Cary detail parts to Bowser's inventory but they had to come out with an entirely new boiler for their M1 model because the Cary boiler molds were previously destroyed in a fire. 6. It may be because of a partnership between Bowser and Cary (they definitely worked together on the short lived Bowser USRA Heavy 4-8-2) but the Cary boiler pretty much matches and will fit any Bowser USRA chassis going back several decades. Sometimes you have to modify the boiler or chassis (depending on which generation of USRA kit) but not much. I have two older Bowser USRA chassis under my two Cary M1a's. My Bowser boilered M1 started with a Bowser USRA Light chassis. Not sure about the compatibility with the older Redlands Bowser 4-8-2 but I suspect they would match up well. Bottom line is, when it comes to Cary and Bowser 4-8-2s, there are enough similarities and common lineages to be able to mix and match not just detail parts but many mechanical parts fairly easily. There are dimensional differences but they're not egregious. When I have more time, I'd like to go more in depth to measure the dimensional differences of the various models and talk about the compatibility with USRA 4-8-2 parts and how all of that compares to the prototype PRR M1 locos but I'll save that for another time (when I have more time). I'd also, at some point, like to pick up a BLI M1a and a Sunset brass M1 and do further investigating and comparing... when I have more time. Date: Tuesday, January 2, 2018, 12:30 PM As far as M1 parts...assuming you're talking PRR M1...I have been gradually piecing together a Bowser M1. I was able to find assembled valve gear, a pair of steam pipes for the cylinders, a Penn line tender and a frame with drivers on eBay. Everything else I've been gradually purchasing directly from Bowser. Bowser is running out of parts so they don't have everything to build an M1 but they have the parts to complete the loco I've started. Yes, eventually, I'll end up paying more for this loco than if I had found a complete one on the 2ndary market but I am able to make smaller parts purchases here and there when I have the extra money so it does keep me from having to pony up a larger amount for a one time purchase. I also have two Cary M1a 's riding on Bowser chassis that I am slowly acquiring parts for. Jeff jppellas@... -----Original Message----- From: Henry Hultgren huligin62@... As far as M1 parts go, did you see that Cary M1a kit that sold on eBay recently? Had the super rare brass frame and instructions with it. Got a little too high for me but I coveted it. I have so many parts and pieces of things that I may never get to them all but, first thing's first: a layout to run the trains on. If things play out the way I'm hoping, I'll start it within the year THEN the building of locos will commence. Jeff jppellas@... -----Original Message----- From: huligin62@... Cary and Late Bowser PRR I1s Boilers
Hello list, I don't have a Cary M1 boiler to compare with my Bowser M1, but I do have a Cary I1s boiler that I could compare with my Bowser I1sa 2-10-0. My Bowser I1sa has the late production (after 1995) larger boiler. I haven't had time to compare the boilers using a scale rule. The Cary cab might be a little shorter than the Bowser cab, the Cary smokebox may be a bit shorter than the Bowser smokebox, and the Cary firebox has a less prominent taper when viewed from the top compared to the late Bowser I1s boiler. Both look quite nice, and both are compatible with the Bowser chassis I have available (older and newer versions of the die cast frame). I don't have a brass I1sa chassis to test fit....have any of you tried fitting the Cary boiler to the fabricated and soldered brass frame that Bowser used during the 1980s? I was able to get a later once piece cast frame and larger Bowser cylinders to go with the partially built model I acquired along with the Cary boiler. Unlike my Bowser/Cary N1s and Bowser M1, I have not yet gotten the Bowser/Cary I1s running yet. I am planning on completing my Cary-boilered I1sa so it represents one of the Altoona-built I1s engines as opposed to the later and more common Baldwin-build I1s engines with Worthington feedwater heaters. Rivarossi FEF-3 7
Hey gang- I just got a Rivarossi FEF-3 at the train show today and I notice that while it has the RP-25 flanges, it seems to have the older design of motor. As such, I find its performance to be a little lacking. Has anyone on the list updated one of those motors? It would appear to be easy to drop a can motor in but I would like to compare notes. It seems to also want some tender pickups and to want a new headlight, but that will come in due course. As an aside, I finished the AHM repower, I will be making a dedicated post to detail the process in the near future, or, when I have my desk cleaned off enough to write it as a magazine how-to article. Teardown Instructions - Rivarossi Milwaukee F-7 4-6-4 16
Hello, there, Last night, I went to start the teardown on a Rivarossi MILW F-7 4-6-4, and was stymied fairly early by the previous owner apparently gluing some of the chassis to the cab. I'm trying to find disassembly/part lists so I can figure out better where it will "come apart" before I start trying to "gently persuade things" with an X-Acto blade. :-) I was looking on HO Seeker, and while they have various instructions for the streamlined and "ordinary" J-3a Hudsons, I don't see any for the MILW F-7. Are they similar? Am I simply on the wrong page? http://hoseeker.net/ahminstructions.html This is one of my favorite candidates for an upcoming clinic on tuning/re-motoring/conversion to DCC, but if instructions aren't available, I've got other candidates. Thanks, Brian Pickering

PRR diesel F units
I'm looking for information about these locomotives. The shells are plastic, maybe Globe the power units are unknown. The B unit has a broken pin that holds the truck to the frame. These were a quality product. Fixing would be easy drill out the old pin and insert a new rod. All axels have brass bearings, after i cleaned some of the dried grease the wheels turned freely. motor worked well and drew 1/2 amp.before oiling. I could only attach 3 pictures. I want to sell them as I'm getting rid of vintage cars and locomotives. I have not set a price, if anyone is interested get in touch Ron Christensen

PRR brass tender 8
I recently picked up an interesting kit from eBay. The listing said the kit was made specifically for the "Bowser PRR N1." I assumed they meant the Cary PRR N1 shell that was to be combined with either a Penn Line or Bowser 2-10-0 chassis to make a 2-10-2 locomotive. The kit I just received is for the tender that was unique to the N1: the 100F85. The kit consists of all etched brass parts to build a complete tender body and frame although there is no underside detail and no trucks. Besides the tender kit, there are a some locomotive cab details to be added to the Cary shell. Unfortunately there was no box, no instructions or parts list and no identifying marks on any of the parts (other than 100F85). Does anyone know anything about this kit? Is it a Cary product or something else? I'd never even knew this kit existed before stumbling across it. Jeff jppellas@...

Bowser Vanderbilt tender.
I bought a Bowser NYC K11 kit in Korea in 1959, came with a Vanderbilt tender with Buckeye trucks. Gave tender away, kept engine which is now in disrepair. Maybe someday I'll fix. Al Al E.

Bowser Vanderbilt Tender With Buckeye Trucks 2
Hello list, I had to look through the archives for William's original post about his Vanderbilt tender. A couple of years ago I bought a partially built Bowser (Redlands) NYC K11 kit that came with a partially assembled Vanderbilt tender with what I believe are Athearn Buckeye trucks. What follows is supposition on my part. Corrections most appreciated. I think the tender was an SP prototype and previously made by Varney. I've looked through several SP steam books and not yet found an SP Vanderbilt tender with Buckeye trucks. I plan to use my Buckeye trucks under another project (a resin N&W auxiliary tender from Funaro and Camarlengo), and I bought some Precision Scale Co. 3186.1 brass Commonweath trucks which look like they will fit, but I haven't tested them yet. Lewis Tender Trucks 2
Group: I am looking for a set of Lewis trucks. I would like to purchase a set if anyone has them. These are the trucks found on Norfolk and Western Y3 2-8-8-2 tenders and some of N&W' auxiliar water tenders. These can be found on Proto USRA 2-8-8-2 tenders, on recent Bachmann Aux tenders and on current BLI aux tenders. Only place I've found that has them in stock is Greenway...for $18/ truck and they are not processing new orders until April. I've also tried Funaro, which makes a resin version of these trucks, but I'm sure they will be too swamped to reply until some time in the new year. Jeff jppellas@...

Bowser tender trucks 2
I recently built a NOS Bowser Vanderbilt tender. The kit did not include trucks. I cannot figure out what to use for this. The Mantua 3 axle trucks that come with their standard and vandy tender don't work. Too long. Looks like it needs 2 2axle trucks, needing electrical pickup. Any ideas ??
