Mantua 4-6-0 Prototypes
9
I was given a Mantua 4-6-0 in the Spirit of '76 yesterday and am wishing to repaint it. I wish to know of any railroads that had them in the late 1940's or early 1950's and/or what other schemes Mantua/Tyco had for them.

Seeking HO Mantua 0-6-0T valve gear kit
2
HELLO: Returning member with request. Was fortunate to obtain NOS vintage HO Mantua 0-6-0T 3 or 4 years ago. A family member's unexpected serious illness, ended all hobby work for awhile. Am now trying to restart small HO switching pike. Would really like to add valve gear to my loco, if possible. Any help really appreciated. TTFN & MERRY CHRISTMAS! .....Old Tom aka papasmurf in NH

Ft Smith & Western RR 2-8-2 kitbash
16
I started a new album of a Ft Smith & Western RR, later Columbus & Greenville RR 2-8-2 that I am kitbashing. Started with an IHC 0-8-0 that I got off Ebay cheap because the front pilot was broken. I striped everything off the boiler, and added new domes, walkways, piping, stack, new cab, brakes, lead and trailing trucks, scratchbuilt boiler backhead, etc. Still working on the trailing truck, have to grind off the sides so it doesn't hit the drivers. Can't decide on the boiler color. Had it dark pullman green, but it seemed too dark. So I tried a lighter Great Northern green, but that might be too light. It looks like the phototypes boiler was just basic black. I wanted it so the piping showed up better. Any opinions of the color? Still have more to do. Bob D.

Southern Ry. Green ?
Could this be a so called "Apple Green" for a base color ? If you come across color prints of FT or F units or Crescent E units ? Quite a bit of difference . Does anyone have a color chart from "back when" ?? Henry H.

H10 Mantua Mikado (adding couplers)
I installed a long shanked 30 series KD coupler to the tender. Hopefully the extra swing of the long shank coupler will compensate for the overhang the long tender has on sharp radius curves. The pilot had to be raised and supported to nount the coupler. I made a piece of channel to extend the frame from the cylinders to the pilot beam where the coupler would be mounted. The sides channel had to be cut out to clear the pilot wheels. The centering spring is an older KD centering spring that works like the newer 30 series . The coupler is a low shank 30 series coupler.

Hi Ray, That is REALLY nice work. Of course, we have grown to expect this kind of work from you. :o) Please keep the photos coming, they are really quite inspirational. Nice work. I take it this is not just a show piece. You intend the loco to do some work, including car sorting? What minimum radius are you working with? Jeff jppellas@...

H10 Mantua Mikado (adding couplers)
Thanks Guyz, I have some 18" radius curves on my current layout. I installed an operating front coupler not so much to sort cars (but it could happen) but to double head with one of the H9 Mikados I am collecting parts for. One of the H9 Mikados is a Rivarossi, the other is a Mantua/Tyco/Cary kitbash (neither are much to look at right now). Thanks

axle spacing and driver diameter
2
Hi there - I joined this list a little while ago and find myself inspired by the discussions on the list. I'm a CPR modeller and looking for suitable drive trains on which to build a reasonable fleet. As a result, I've been looking at the Feb. 1990 Model Railroader article that documents the diameter and axle spacing of a number of formerly available models, including Mantua, MDC/Roundhouse and Bowser. The article isn't complete in that it omits some models within those company's product lines and skips some manufacturers (like old Bachman, Rivarossi) altogether. Since then, other manufacturers have come along with new products. It is all very tempting and somewhat confusing. But bottom line, I'm wondering whether anyone has made corrections or attempted to fill in any of the blanks since then. So far I have found one erroneous listing or change by the manufacturer: a friend has done measurements of the Bowser Casey Jones 4-6-0 and found: the axle spacing between 1st and 2nd drivers is only 63" instead of 6' 3" (75") as shown in the article, and likewise the article says the driver diameter should be 61" and the model measures closer to 51". Turns out a bit of a disappointment for my CPR D9g project. I was hoping to find a model with a driver axle spacing of 6' 10" between axles 1 and 2, and spacing of 8' between axle 2 and 3. I figure if the axle spacing is OK, I can switch the the appropriate diameter drivers and make any other adjustments (pilot truck in particular). Anyhow, was just wondering if others have collected this sort of information for other models and whether it is available on line etc. . . . Rob Kirkham

Last project
2
Jeff P, The assembled Bowser Mountain frame came back from a man that assembled them courtesy of you. This will probably be my last project till hopefully my medical problem gets better. Jeff, tell Roger I appreciate him adding the eccentrics, etc to my valve gears since my shaky hands wouldn't let me do it . Money will be back on the way hopefully Monday. Parts came to late today to do anything about paying. Jim

Closing collection

To all members, Unless some medical doctors come up with a cure for Levatore Ani Syndrome or I kick the bucket I won't be doing to much with vintage trains. My collection will be shared with my two children at such time I can no longer enjoyed looking at them. NOTHING IS FOR SALE.. I might pop in on sight once one in a while but researching items and building new pieces will be out of the question. Nice knowing everyone. Keep up the good work. Jim H

Christmas greetings to all

Hi, all... I have been reading but not posting these long months. So sorry to hear, Jim, of your health complications. You are a living legacy and are of the generation that got a lot of us mid-50's (age) "boomers" into the more advanced aspects of the hobby and still kept it fun! Sean-good luck with the replacement surgery. Henry-I know you had a bad spell a while back-are you all up to speed yet? Train-wise I thinnned out a lot of my "heritage fleet" of diecast oldies (motive power wise) but kept a Penn Line Whitcomb, an older Bowser K-4 and the re-powered Varney NW2....went DCC (NCE) with the "scale' fleet and have the L-girders up for a 6x11 around-the-wall shelf layout in my den/train room. Family life (a wonderful but independent 14 yr ld daughter) and my wife's recent grad school loans keep me pretty train-free, but I love them dearly and it's worth it! And the real railroad that keeps me gainfully employed is a roller coaster ride, as the senior frt agent for the only shareholder-owned regional in New England. (we're the company that bought Rail America a while back)But I enjoy the companionship of you all electronically through good times and bad, and wish you all a wonderul Christmas , and if any of you (like myself) also do Chanukah, happy last day of same!!!!! Here's to keepin' 'em rolling, highballing right along through 2013. Good railroad and clear blocks all the way! Mitch, up in the North Woods of Maine

Tender

I believe this is a Penn Line tender? It has Penn Line trucks. Is this rare...as I am planning on making a MOW water tank out of it, unless someone talks me out of it. It weighs a ton! Kent Hurley Kansas City, MO
