Mantua side rod screws / open pole motor question

开云体育

?

Group I find that I need some advice or assistance. I have several (10) Mantua Orange box kits that I am in need of replacing side rod screws for. There is nothing more irritating than opening a factory plastic covered kit and finding they shorted you a screw. And since I have several to build still I am going to source some extras if I can find some. Anyone have any ideas on a source?

Also all of these kits are open pole motored and I plan to operate then on an all DCC system. So its replace the motors also. But I haven’t found a source or cross reference for these motors. So I come to seek the advice of the group.

?

Sincerely;

Patrick Connell

I get different small screws from Micro Fasteners-?
I'm not sure of the sizes, but if anyone here can fill you in I'm sure they would have them.? They don't offer small quantities, but the prices aren't bad?

All Mantua siderod screws were brass hexhead with a shoulder for the thickness of siderods being fastened and had 0-80 screw threads to attach it to the wheel. Slotted steel screws may be used if the head and shoulder are the correct size and length with the 0-80 screw threads. I have used both.
You can also use an 0-80 SLOTTED PAN HEAD SCREW WITH A FULL SCREW THREAD BODY AND CUT A BRASS TUBE SLEEVE THE RIGHT LENGTH FOR THE SIDEROD THICKNESS TO BEAR ON, WITH A LITTLE CLEARANCE SPACE UNDER THE HEAD OF COURSE.

THIS APPLIES TO ALL THE MANTUA I EVER HANDLED EXCEPT FOR THE MAIN ROD/ECCENTRIC CRANK SCREW... THERE WERE SEVERAL VARITIES ON THAT DEPENDING ON THE SPACER AND E. CRANK DESIGN. MOST OF THEM CAN BE DONE WITH AN 0-80 FULL THREAD BODY LONG ENOUGH TO HOLD THE E. CRANK, ROD SPACER AND SIDEROD BEARING SLEEVE.

Hoping you success...

YOU MAY ALSO USE A FILLISTER HEAD STEEL OR BRASS SLOTTED 0-80 TO CUT TO LENGTH AND APPLY A SLEEVE IF OTHER HEADS NOT AVAILABLE.

Bowser is out of the steam game, but they may still have some shouldered screws that could work.

You don't have to change the motors.? Isolate the brushes from the motor frame. I slide some insulation from 22 gauge wire over the spring wire that holds the brushes tight.? See?for an example.? Mantua also made a can motor adaptor around 1990.? It's a plastic frame that holds a can motor at the correct angle.? You might find one at a show or on eBay.

Mantua locomotives are now being made by MRC, Model Rectifier Corp.. They should have the parts you need.
