Rivarossi FEF-3

Nathan Rich

Hey gang-

I just got a Rivarossi FEF-3 at the train show today and I notice that while it has the RP-25 flanges, it seems to have the older design of motor. As such, I find its performance to be a little lacking.

Has anyone on the list updated one of those motors? It would appear to be easy to drop a can motor in but I would like to compare notes.?

It seems to also want some tender pickups and to want a new headlight, but that will come in due course.?

As an aside, I finished the AHM repower, I will be making a dedicated post to detail the process in the near future, or, when I have my desk cleaned off enough to write it as a magazine how-to article.

Nathan Rich?

Nathan , you will run into problems with some of those AHM ? RivRossi motors. They really don't like heat / heavy loading . You can go to NORTH WEST SHORT LINE for data and dimensions ?? stock up on aspirins as it'll give you a headache !! Look up high rpm , 5 or 7 poles , trim frame , mount in bathroom caulk ?????? Nathan,

The motor in the FEF-3 is the large one in all of their UP large steam and is actually quite powerful and cool running, but... it only has three poles.

I fit a sizeable Sagami in mine. It mounted easily on the original mount. There's a lot of room in that firebox.

It does seem to have enough power, but I want smoothness... can you give me more data on your Sagami conversion?

I also picked up a Big Boy at the same time, it has a center Can motor that is butter so it doesnt need messed with. The both pf them need new tires though, they've thrown their originals. Tires I can handle, I have a source, and I will make a post when it gets done.?

Thank you!

Nathan,

Fortunately I kept the paperwork with the loco. It was a NWSL 2027 Sagami, so that should help you with an equivalent. It was rated at 9100 RPM at 12V, which is a bit speedy in these if memory serves.

I've actually been finding really good motors from China on eBay, particularly 6 pole motors which have low RPM and ridiculous torque for their size. A guy on another group who repowers brass professionally is recommending this Mabuchi:

It's definitely worth a shot for that price.

P.S. As far as the conversion, it was literally a drop-in fit. It screwed right to the mount with two metric washer head screws I salvaged from some piece of electronics. The shaft is just silicone fuel line tubing with 2mm shaft inside to fill the space between the motor and worm shaft (The one in the pic is too short and was just for testing).?

Because the gearbox input shaft is just a stub I put a piece of heat shrink tubing over it so the silicone tubing would have something to grab. Remove the shaft before heating the tubing, obviously.

Nelson?

I have ordered 6 of those motors, thank you. I will look into the Sagami motor later. \\

Mush Appreciated.
