Re: Repowering old brass - can motors?

Hi Nigel

Was looking at Mabuchi
FT-010SA-07300 (24v)
And
FT-010SA-09190 (12v).

Are these a good option?

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Repowering old brass - can motors?

Two places One? NWSL?? Two A Line?? ?Micro- Mark also sells can motors?

You should able to find motors that fit you models. Although many of the one's I bought in 1980s have can motors already. Only PFM models I have have open frame motors.??

Win

Re: Repowering old brass - can motors?

Mabuchi and Minneabea four magnet,? six slot motors listed on Ebay in the $3 range are the best.? There are 18mm, 15mm,? 12mm and 10mm square sizes commonly available.? ?Measure the space you have.? ?Use Hobbytown universal joints to connect to the gearbox.?

Re: Can motor kit on eBay for Mantua Pacifics and Hudsons?

Jason,?

From a Mechanical Engineering perspective; it is AWFUL.? ?The motor bearings are not sufficient to support the flywheel and worm so far from the motor.? ?The motor bearings will wear out very quickly and the worm to worm gear engagement will not be reliable.?

My recollection is that the HOLLAND motors were offered in the mid 80's as repower options.? They were reputed to have been surplus from computer tape drive.? You know - when computers were buildings, not telephones.? They were mostly suggested as replacements for the comtemorary MODEL POWER FA's and Sharks which had a similar size OEM power.? They were smooth, strong and HEAVY so the longer trains getting popular could be handled.? These converts could pull.

I recall reading that they may have fallen out of favor because they had a somewhat lower RPM and Clubs found them too slow and not good for mixed consists.? I think that would be an asset myself.? I try to get them if I see them.?

I knew something was up and I popped off the shell to find a huge can motor and flywheels that were nearly as wide as the carbody. For HO scale, this motor is an absolute beast. There are no clear ID marks alluding to the usual suspects like NWSL, A-Line, Hobbytown. etc. The only marks I can find on the motor are "Holland". Can anyone give some background on this repowering? Is this (or was this) part of a complete kit or is this something that would had to have been put together piecemeal with separate components? These engines run fantastic and pull well. I wish we had more of them, especially a couple of more of the PA's.

If my memory serves me ,? a seller on evilbay in Fla. had some of both and their flywheels and window glazing for FP7as ??? Henry

Hello list ! My guess is ROCO can motors , they also had Mashima shaped ones . The large one I have? is old , rattles , cackles and riuns likew a raped ape ! Good puller !? ?Henry? .

Re: Mystery repowered Athearn F-7's

I have one powered by an A-line chassis.? It uses an Athearn frame and there is a lead cradle purred in place to hold the motor.? Sounds like what you have.

Thanks for your help. I followed the link and ordered the wheelset. As soon as I get it I will install it and let you know how it works.?

?It turns out that medical tubing will work also [again neoprine small ] cut to fit !? Henry?

Broken Bachmann Drivers

? ?I know this is a common problem, and I just wonder if anybody has come up with a solution. I have a vintage Bachmann Plus 2-8-0 with drivers that have cracked nylon axles. I have tried super glue to no avail, and replacement axles are, to the best of my knowledge, unavailable. This is about the third set of axles that have cracked on me. Just what kind of crap is this? The rest of the loco seems OK. Any tips ?? Thanks?

Re: Mantua Power Drive parts

William, list,

Option one (direct replacement) follows.

One source of the silicone/plastic tubing is model airplane fuel line. ?I was lucky enough to have a general purpose hobby shop near me that had several diameters I could choose from.

A sample of the model airplane fuel line is at the web address below; there are several different sizes out there. You may need to copy and paste the web address below to get it to work.

Alternatively, using Google to search for model airplane fuel line brings a lot of results.

Option two follows. ?

Replacing the motor-to-gearbox connection with universal joints is more complicated, but results in less machine friction. ?You also need to know the size of the shaft on the gearbox and the size of the motor shaft (I learned the two are not necessarily the same on at least two projects). ?Two purveyors of universal joints are Hobbytown of Boston and Northwest Short Line (www.nwsl.com). ?

I ordered a bunch of universals from Nick of Hobbytown of Boston in 2020.?
