MDC HOn3 Rod Locos

I asked this a couple of years ago, didn't get an answer for the 2-8-0's.

I need to get a few regear kits for my unbuilt MDC kits.? NWSL has a a kit that fits 1998 and later kits.??
But how does one tell which are pre-19998 and which are post-1998?? Are all brown flat boxes pre-1998?
?
Any help would be appreciated ...

Re: Clearing out

Dave, am very interested in an "Old Lady."? And if the price is kinda low, one each of the others (unless the fever subsides)...I

"restored Varney Old Lady 2-8-0's, Mantua Version 2 Mikados, Penn Line mini disesemal, Mantua 0-6-0, Athearn Erie PA and PB, Athearn Hustler, new IHC steamer in box" [if purple box SP 2-6-0]

I have a sister that lives in Bonney Lake, WA.

Re: Looking for a Mantua bearing

Dave,

This is a possibility but making one of these bearings is the last resort for me. I have plenty of projects to keep me busy until one of them turns up and sooner or later it will.

John Bopp

Re: Looking for a Mantua bearing

McMaster-Carr has close:
For 3/32" Shaft Dia.
1/4" 1/4" 46 lbs. @ 120 rpm Lubricated SAE 30 Oil -35° to 300° 15.78

You can get them in about any length, but 1/4" is good, file down close, they use thrust washers anyway to set them up. Use the un-files side for thrust.

chuck them up in a tight fitting bolt, use a Dremel and round the outside to match you existing with a file.

Looking more, as $15.78 for one is a tad steep.

Re: Looking for a Mantua bearing

Agreed, probably not Mantua. And, yes, Dan would have had them.

John Bopp

Re: Looking for a Mantua bearing

I found two in the bin.

Shaft that fits is .101", OD is .230, length is .155.

So probably not for the Mantuas.

Re: Looking for a Mantua bearing

When I restored my three, I found parts locos....didn't mind stripping out a Zamac-Rot chassis.
Let me look in the parts bin.
If Dan was still around, he'd have had them.

Dave,

Thanks for the tip on the early Mantua Mike. It's not one I'm familiar with so I didn't realize it also has the 6303 bearing. I'll keep an eye out for one but I'd still like to find just one bearing. If I steal one from something else then whatever that is will be short a part so it won't be useable. I'm really trying to cut down on the incomplete projects I have!

Re: Looking for a Mantua bearing

The size you gave looked familiar. I just checked, the Version one and Version 2 Mikado (gearbox bolts down to the frame) is a 6303 at both ends.

I have three of these engines, restored. not sure about parts. I can dig through my stuff, but a broken Version 2 Mike is probably a lot easier to find for that part!

If I recall, there is a slot, depression, divot on one side of the outer ball that fits against a ridge to keep it from spinning.

Dave

Re: Henry Hultgren

Getting to that point. The 3-rail is staying in the basement, the LS outside...even tho with lockdowns haven't had a revenue run in 11-1/2 months.

I've got what I thought was over 30 restored engines, but I forgot the box of Lionel FA and FB units.
Probably close to 40, 30 restored, glass beaded, filed parting lines, flash removed, parts from Dan where needed, pinted, lubed and track tested.
I gotta thin something out!

Older Mantua die cast steamers, latest one I bought new in the Navy in....1970? 0-6-0.
LOTS of Varney, steam and F units, Penn Line, two English Yardbirds (one in the family since new), couple of Docksiders, Athearn 0-4-2T, 0-6-0, dual geared Geep and who knows how many freight cars.
I started to make lists years ago, not at all inclusive. no way to ship it all. Can you imagine a Varney Old Lady with cowcatcher busted, whistle snapped off....so it's local, figure, looking at prices, 3500 and we talk.

If Dan was still around, I'd still be restoring them!

?I grabbed three files and posted below of rolling stock.

Clearing out

Age, storage, all that.

Half 0, mostly vintage, Roundhouse, Varney (including a dozen or so metal Varney high cars), Ulrich, some early cardstock Varney freight, restored Varney Old Lady 2-8-0's (3), Mantua Version 2 Mikados (3), Penn Line mini disesemal, Mantua 0-4-0's and 0-6-0, Athearn 0-4-2T, 0-6-0, Varney F units (some done, some glass beaded) mix of belt drive pulley and geared, English 0-4-0 (2), Mantua 4-8-0, one Brass NJ heavyweight obs, box of Lionel FA's, tested most of them, running, including one A-B set of SF blue and yellow, Athearn dual-geared Geep plus spare set of power trucks, Varney Docksiders (2), Varney SW, Athearn SW, Athearn Erie PA and PB, Rivarossi Heisler, Athearn Hustler, new IHC steamer in box, Silver Streak, vintage (working) power packs, plastic boxes of categorized parts, motors, gears, couplers, DeVore and MDC couplers, string of cars with Mantua couplers, bag of even more Mantua couplers, painted but unfinished Mantua Pacific kit, 1949 and earlier Varney sprung Super Mikado.

I have some lists.

Near Seattle, we can get together, no way I'm gonna box all this up.

Re: Looking for a set of Varney F Unit front* trucks...

Spring drive, with three grooves, were on the three piece gear boxes, same as the Brute drivers.

The one piece gears boxes with the open bottoms (i.e. Walt Disney or Mickey Mouse) were the same for F units and switchers. Both trucks.

I did not realize that until maybe 25 years ago (My first HO loco was given to me for Christmas 1949 so 25 years is relatively recent) when a friend gave me a Varney eight wheel drive switcher and I didn’t understand why there was so little space between the trucks. My Athearn switcher and my friends Hobbytown/Cary SW1500 had much more space.

Duh, it only took about 10 seconds after looking at each from the underside to see why.

Hi John,

Mine both; A&B units are spring belt models...
gonna mod them to power the front truck too on both.
Btw, is it true the front trucks on the Varney switcher
and F-units excluding the side frames are the same?

Thanks,
Jeff
