The problem is the corners. What tool can I use to make the tight radius corners? A friend suggested a router. Has anyone overcome this problem? How? What tools did you use?? Filing the corners down by hand is possible, but accuracy and uniformity are hard to achieve with hand tools. Plus doing four corners on each window for a dozen or so cars is a daunting proposition. Bowser K11 Tender
Hello list, Nice to say hello to all of you on io groups.? I found out the Mantua 28 foot tender's tank length is 26 scale feet, which makes it passable for a layout-quality version of a K11c with a 7500 gallon or 8000 gallon tender. ? Prior to this kitbash, I had thought of it as a switcher tender, but I think it works behind this medium-sized Pacific.? The coal bunker is a bit short and the tank height is too tall for a 7500 gallon tender and too short for an 8000 gallon tender.....I decided to compromise since I didn't feel ready to scratch build a tender. Thanks very much to Jeff Pellas for sending a pair of the durable Bowser NYC-style tender trucks which work nicely with this model. A bit of detailing for the engine is next on the agenda. ? ? 4560 was a K11e, built a bit later (and by NYC's preferred builder Also) than the Baldwin-built K11c that I'm working towards. ? Re: Replacing a brass frame on a Bowser H9 ??
I just asked that today. And then just now, upon reviewing the last email I had from Groups.io, I realized that I missed one step. After granting the moderator permissions, I was supposed to go back to Groups.io, and give permission (again? after all this? apparently.) for the transfer to occur. So, since I've now done that, hopefully it will get started post haste. Mea culpa. Brian Pickering bpickeri@... |
Re: Replacing a brass frame on a Bowser H9 ??
Henry, list, About 20 years ago, I had to replace the brass frame on my Bowser H9s because the solder joints that held the forward part of the frame together kept failing. ?I think this was just a bad solder joint, since my other two Bowser engines with brass frames (both G5s 4-6-0s) have been trouble-free. At the time, Bowser was in full production on its steam engine line and I bought the zinc underframe (Bowser's part number is 820) and drivers without bearings to fit the zinc frame. Since Bowser's drivers are out of production, one solution is to use NWSL's Puller to remove the non-insulated driver (I scribe a mark crossing both axle and wheel so when I reassemble the wheel, it has the factory quartering), slide the bearings out (you'd need to also temporarily remove the axle gear to get to the other bearing), and reassemble the drivers with the NWSL Sensipress. Henry, do you have the Puller and Sensipress at home? ?If not, I may be able to help as long as you're not in a rush. ? Doug Kisala

IT says that you can replace the brass frame with a cast one ? It appears to be able to fix my rpoblem on this loco . HOWEVER , there are micro brass bearing on all drivers . Is it big enough for? the axles with the bearings on them ?? Whip out the caliper again ??? ? Henry _ . |

Re: Varney/Bowser Old Lady
You are in luck , I have Casey Joneses , a G5 4-6-0? Mantua saddles as well . The Mantuas? inside size is 9 mm. . The cylinders are smaller size overall . MDC 0-6-0 cylinders will work 9mm , econo valve works .?? Bowser / Pennline G 5 4-6-0 is likely the same as a K4? an H9 ?G5 7mm well inside . Quirks ?? Varney mounted their cylinders forward , drill yours centered if needed . Your choice . Drill and file , eh ?? Henry

Re: Varney/Bowser Old Lady
I only saw Old Ladys with the slanted cylinders. Same with the Casey Jones. The only straight ones I have seen were on Bowsers. Roger Huber Deer Creek Locomotive Works

Varney itself also used the straight sided cylinders at some point.? An old ad shows then on a 10 wheeler also (with valve gear).

The Varney Old Lady cylinders slanted inward at the top. The Bowser version used cylinders that were basically straight sided.
