Low back-up battery display

Greeting & salutations all:

I am glad to see there is a community for these! The bad news would be that I got out my QY100 for the first time since I won it in an EBay auction towards the beginning of last year: When I first turn it on, I get the “low back up battery” message. I have changed the AA batteries a few times, but the message persists. Also, I noticed that the data I enter in does not save when I turn it off. So I have two questions: (1) does anyone know the fix for this problem? and (2) I currently do not have a card for my QY-will I still be able to save data when my card arrives? (Found an 8mb on EBay for a good price: probably should have asked these questions before I ordered the card!). I am thankful for any help or advice.

:-) yeah, it means the internal lithium cell battery. quite easy to change. get a decent quality one.

I second QYedit, buy a CR2032 cell, replacement takes 5 minutes, the
"lesser" QYs (100 & 70) have a battery holder. Energizer or Duracell,
please. Or a computer-grade BIOS power cell. CR2032 as well.

I also have a QY700, and its internal 2032 is still going strong after
more than 20 years(Silver oxide batttery), but I already have a holder
for CMOS/BIOS batteries ready at hand for emergency, since in the 700 &
300 the battery is _soldered_!

SVG- I had the same issue when I returned to my QY-70 after a 20 year hiatus. What you need is a new lithium battery. I bought the Energizer 2032 at Walmart. It’s about the size of a dime. If you’re careful enough, you can undo the back of the sequencer and exchange it yourself. Mine took roughly 5 minutes. Let me know if this works and feel free to pass on any sequencing tips. Carry on!

Pretty sure you can still save to the SmartMedia card with a dead internal battery (but must be done manually), but you’ll really want to replace that internal battery since loss of external power will lose your work.. Once the internal battery is replaced you should be good for upto 10 years of storing 20 songs and 64 patterns in the device. ?Note: Yamaha has mentioned that leaving a smart media card in the device when stored can shorten internal battery life... so only out it in when you want to save/load from it. ? ?Also, avoid formatting smart media on a pc card reader as that has been known to corrupt them, use the device instead. ?(Good advice for any device storage media IMHO).

The battery is a CR2032, and on the QY100... to replace...you remove the back by unscrewing the back screws and then opening like a book with the edge closest to the battery door as the spine (so to speak)...reason is because there is a cable there that attaches to the battery compartment. ? ?Once open you can probably reach in and unplug the battery compartment cable and separate the two halves.

Next you’ll see a copper shield held on by two screws... unscrew those and lift the copper shield and you will see the battery... To remove battery you SLIDE it toward the spring edge and it will pop-up... Take the battery out abd out the new one in the same way and then gently push it in while sliding it toward spring then hold it down and let the spring push it back under it’s tabs.

The lay the copper shield back (be careful to ensure it is tucked in at tge top where it is still attached. And then replug in battery cable and close it back up like a book and put the back screw in... and you’re done.

(Note: Unlike the QY100, the QY70 does not have a copper shield and the battery compartment is soldered so you cannot simply unplug the battery compartment, but the rest still applies and it still easy to replace the internal battery on the QY70.

Regarding lighting screen:
People have put LED side lighting inside the QY70/QY100 but it is a very tight fit.. others have installed EL Panels which really makes for the most uniform backlighting IMHO, but it is also the most complex. ?I think the nintendo front light is a good idea unless you feel really comfortable with your tech skills as the other internal solutions are much more intensive and technical.

'sequencing tips'... i'm thinking HARD about a little Arturia KeyStep... kind of undecided about the more expensive and bigger 37key version with more features that would also make a lot of sense. - why? ... well i love 'step-rest'etc sequencing like on a sh101 -or jx3p since the KS is a polyphonic sequencer. and you know how you can't hear the other parts while you're entering a step sequence -which may not bother anyone here, but i've found it... well, i realised, duh, that you can't hear the other parts, right.. so a Keystep could be really good with it. plus it's a little vel-sensitive keyboard with an arpeggiator, and some really useful stuff like analogue sync, dinsync. can even sequence 2 midi tracks, which you'd record into the QY in realtime, or have it clocking MIDI from analogue if you want to get complicated.

yeah so, that's my little idea for today :-)
just have to decide if i go for the little one or the slightly bigger one (costing more).

ah just thought: the 37 seems to need 12v 1.5A for some reason, whereas the 32 wants 9v 0.5A ...*if* you only run your QY off PSU, would there be any way to derive an Aux voltage output/pass-on to another device, and run them both off a single supply? (or have a splitter, i guess).
my QY came with a 9v supply and seems happy with that, although i think it's supposed to be rated for 12v (which i now use).
(yep, Eric, i think we've discussed this)

anyway: Keystep? d*mn cool little keyboard/sequencer IMO
